Abstract

This project aims to develop an AI-driven system to improve communication for individuals with hearing and speech impairments using sign language. The system will utilize deep learning techniques, specifically Temporal Convolutional Networks, to accurately recognize sign gestures and convert spoken language into text. It will support Indian Sign Language and is designed to enhance accessibility and communication across various user groups.

Abstract

Effective communication is essential for conveying information, ideas, and emotions.

However, individuals with hearing and speech impairments face significant challenges in
interacting with the broader community. Sign language serves as a critical communication
tool for individuals with hearing impairments, but its interpretation remains difficult for
those unfamiliar with it. Current sign language recognition technologies face challenges
related to accuracy, adaptability, and real-time processing. This project aims to develop an
AI-driven system that facilitates communication between individuals with hearing and
speech impairments and those unfamiliar with sign language. The proposed system will
leverage advancements in deep learning, particularly Temporal Convolutional Networks
(TCNs), to enable accurate sign recognition. It will consist of three core components: a Sign
Recognition Module (SRM) utilizing TCNs to interpret sign gestures, a Speech Recognition
and Synthesis Module (SRSM) employing Hidden Markov Models to convert spoken
language into text, and an Avatar Module (AM) that visually represents speech as
corresponding signs. The system will be designed to support Indian Sign Language and will
aim to bridge communication gaps for various user groups, including individuals with
hearing and speech difficulties and those unfamiliar with sign language. The development of
this system is expected to contribute to improved accessibility and foster better
communication in diverse environments.
