The results of the OECD screening study (a very high NOAEL) and data with other nitrate compounds do indicate
that no classification is required for potassium nitrate according to the CLP Regulation.

SECTION 12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION
12.1 Toxicity
12.1.1 Aquatic toxicity
Short-term toxicity
Fish, Danio rerio, LC50 (96 h): 100 mg/L. (OECD Guideline 203)
Aquatic invertebrates, Daphnia magna, EC50 (48 h): 490 mg/L

Not classified (Based on available data, the classification criteria are not met)
12.1.2 Toxicity to other organisms
No data available
12.2 Persistence and degradability
12.2.1 Biodegradation
Readily biodegradation study does not need to be conducted since the substance is an inorganic salt (Annex VII
REACH). In addition, biodegradation of nitrate can occur under anaerobic conditions, both under natural
conditions and as a controlled process in many wastewater treatment plants, resulting in degradation products
like nitrite, oxide of nitrogen, nitrogen, or ammonia. Nitrate degradation is fastest in anaerobic conditions. In the
anaerobic transformation of nitrate into N2, N2O and NH3, the biodegradation rate in wastewater plant at 20
degrees Celsius is 70 g N/kg dissolved solid/day.
12.2.2 Chemical degradation
In aqueous solution, potassium nitrate is completely dissociated into the potassium ion (K+) and the nitrate
anion (NO3 -). Hydrolysis of the ions in potassium nitrate does not occur.
12.3 Bioaccumulative potential
Low potential for bioaccumulation.
12.4 Mobility in soil
Potassium nitrate will completely dissociate into ions in water and thus has a low potential for adsorption. In
addition, volatilization is also unlikely due to the properties of the substance.
12.5 Results of PBT and vPvB assessment
In accordance with REACH Annex XIII, PBT assessment does not apply as this substance is an inorganic
substance.
