ETHICAL QUESTIONS IN THE WAKE OF THE “COVID-19” PANDEMIC

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, every aspect of life has been impacted
on a global scale. A range of ethical questions have arisen that need to be carefully
considered. In this crisis, ethical dilemmas include how to allocate resources to
healthcare workers, how to distribute vaccines, and what businesses should do first.
Concerns about who should receive the COVID-19 vaccine first arise as a result of
COVID-19 vaccine distribution. What should the priority be? Is it to prioritize
vulnerable groups or individuals who would benefit from it most, such as medical
professionals? Lessons can be learned from Italy, where healthcare professionals
faced the difficult decision of determining which patients should receive treatment
when resources were stretched to their limits. This also raises the issue of equity
between poorer and richer countries when receiving vaccines. Richer countries are
stocking up on vaccines for their citizens, leaving poorer countries to struggle in
buying vaccines. Due to high costs, a small market, and the pandemic's temporary
nature, pharmaceutical companies lack financial incentives, necessitating
government intervention to address market failures in vaccine development.
Businesses started to face ethical dilemmas due to privacy concerns in using
“personal location data” for infection tracking.
I chose this article because I am more familiar with the topic of COVID-19. I
feel like these ethical questions need to be dealt with calmly and need reasonable
solutions. I believe vaccinations need to be given to healthcare workers first then
others since we need healthy healthcare workers to take care of patients. Vaccines
should not be used as a business opportunity but seen as an important item that is
scarce and should be treated as such. Poorer countries should also be given the
opportunity to get the vaccinations they need. Vaccine development is extremely
important for the safety of all humans on Earth, so I believe that the government
must intervene to address market failures. But in the case of businesses facing
ethical dilemmas due to privacy concerns, it can be hard, all the views on this
question must be considered to reach a solution.
