MATERIALS IN LANGUAGE TEACHING

Teaching material, whether made commercially or made by a teacher for use in his own class, is an
important element in the curriculum, and is the most tangible aspect of the curriculum. If the
curriculum determines the aims, objectives and contents of the teaching then the material is a source in
achieving the intended goals and objectives. Even if there is no syllabus, the material can be used as a
guide for teachers in determining the intensity of the scope of teaching materials needed. According to
Cunningsworth (1995) the function of the material in language teaching is as follows. 1. Sources of
presentation of oral and written languages. The source of communicative interaction and student
training activities. Grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and other reference sources. 4. Sources of
stimulation and ideas for syllabus classroom activities (which reflect established learning goals). 5.
Independent student learning resources. 6. Supporting teacher assignments. With these functions,
teaching material can influence what and how you teach. Therefore, it is very important for you to
select material that as closely as possible reflects the objectives, programs, and teaching approaches
that are appropriate to the level of mastery and age of students.

TYPE OF MATERIALS

1.1. Textbook

From the various types of material, textbook is the most commonly used material by teachers in
supporting teaching. The level of dependence of teachers on the use of textbooks as teaching material
varies greatly, from using the textbook fully to not using it at all, where the teacher works based on his
own syllabus or program, and only uses textbooks or additional material if needed. Between these two
extreme situations, there is a compromise situation where the textbook is used selectively, does not
have to follow the order of presentation in the book and is supported by additional material. Given the
situation of each class is different, then you need to understand what are the advantages and
disadvantages of the textbook, so you can decide how much dependence on the textbook.

2. Written Text. This type of material is also widely used and is relatively easy to obtain. Written text
varies greatly from labels, notes and forms to articles, manuals and books. From your daily environment
you can get authentic written texts, such as calendars, advertisements, train schedules, restaurant
menus, and newspaper / magazine articles written in English.

3. Realia. Realia or real objects are types of teaching aids that have long been used by teachers in
teaching languages, especially to introduce new vocabulary. Objects, such as food, school supplies and
other objects that are used daily and can be brought into the classroom, are very effective in helping
students connect language and reality. This reality is especially useful in teaching English to children.

4. Poster, Chart, Picture. This type of material is very effective in supporting language teaching. You can
collect images both homemade and taken from magazines (photos, diagrams, advertisements, etc.).
The picture should be large enough so that all students in the class can see it. In order not to be easily
damaged for repeated use, images should be affixed to cardboard or laminated.

5. technology, there are several parts of technology 1. audiotape 2. video. 3. overhead projector 4.

TEACHING MATERIALS AND APPROACHES

As one important component in the teaching and learning process,

teaching materials have different roles in each

language teaching approach. The role of matter in an approach

teaching determines the main function of the material, form or type

material, the relationship of material with other language input sources, (for example:

whether the material is the main source or supplement), and

teacher's ability, (for example: whether linguistic competence is needed or

certain level of education or training).

*The following are the roles and types of material that fit the approach

language teaching that has been described in previous modules.

1. The Direct Method 2. The Audio-Lingual Method 3. Grammar Translation Method 4. Total Physical
Response, (TPR) 5. Natural Approach 6. Communicative Approach 7. Content-based Approach (CBA) 8.
Whole Language Approach 9. Literature-based Approach
