1 GENERAL

om 46
1.1 Purpose

.c 8
is 1
The purpose of this document is to establish guidelines for overall emission testing of materials used in

nt SD
interior of the vehicle. This standard defines minimal material level requirements for Fogging, Odor and
the emissions of Carbonyls, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and Total Volatile Organic Compounds

lla d:
(TVOCs).

te ri
The standard applies to all Stellantis regions.

.s se
1.2 Coverage of this Standard

al u
rn ) -
This specification addresses material level requirements only. The requirements established by this
standard apply to all materials supplied to STELLANTIS for usage in passenger cabin, load space and air
filtration system components.
te +1
ex TC
Emissions from textile, carpets, leathers, films, plastic components, adhesives, sealants, foams, coatings,
composite materials, elastomers, rubbers, insulation, etc. are covered under this standard. Composite
e@ (U

materials which are materials composed of two or more layers intimately held at every point of contact by
bonding, cladding, etc., are also covered by this standard. When layers are intermittently held together
ln M

by sewing, welding, etc. they are not considered to be composite materials and must be tested
individually.
ua P
ho 18

1.3 Limitations on Usage

ic 3:

This standard applies to materials used on vehicle interior parts with a surface higher than 150 cm² and/or
.b 0

a weight of 50 g minimum. If a part is used multiple times inside the vehicle (e.g. knobs, sockets, etc) the
total volume and weight of all parts used in the interior shall be added and if the total volume and/or
ra 25

weight exceeds the above mentioned limits, the emission tests shall be done.

DNPH: 2, 4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine.

converted to hydrazone derivatives.

Tenax TA: A porous polymer resin based on 2.6-diphenylene oxide. It has been specifically designed for
the trapping of volatiles and semi-volatiles from air or which have been purged from liquid or solid sample
matrices; it is the most commonly used sorbent for VOCs ranging in volatility from n-hexane to n-

VOCs: Volatile Organic Compounds which are organic chemicals that have a high vapor pressure at
ordinary room temperature. Their high vapor pressure results from a low boiling point, which causes

large numbers of molecules to evaporate or sublimate from the liquid or solid form of the compound and
enter the surrounding air.

5 REQUIREMENTS/CONDITIONS

nt SD
5.1 Requirements For Test Preparation And Evaluation

lla d:
Testing per this standard shall be performed by an accredited laboratory that is acceptable to

te ri
STELLANTIS Materials Engineering Department. The list with the approved testing laboratories is

.s se
provided in section 5.3 and in the Annexes E and F of this standard.

al u
Sample size and quantity shall be sufficient so that all testing can be performed.

rn ) -
Plastic pellet raw materials intended for the test should be molded in a test plaque; enough test plaques

te +1
to perform all testing described below should be submitted.
ex TC
For Roll Goods materials (fabrics, leather, carpet, synthetic leather), the sample size should be minimun
1m2.
e@ (U

For Paint: supplier should prepare the sample following their paint process guidelines for coating,
ln M

thickness and drying. Paints are sprayed on the Aluminum foil. For multilayer paints, the thickness of the
ua P

individual layers of the film shall be the same as the thickness of the painted part. If needed each paint
layer should be analyzed separately. The paint process guidelines of the paint supplier shall be followed.
ho 18

After drying the samples are vented at room temperature for 7 days. Minimum of three letter size
(approx. 8 in2 x 11 in2) samples of the prepared paint as described above should be submitted for testing.
ic 3:
.b 0

For Fillers, Adhesives, Sealants, Deadener Pads, etc. cured within the vehicles, the supplier has to
prepare the sample following the vehicle production process at the representative cure temperature and
ra 25

time. Material shall be applied to Aluminum foil for sample preparation. After drying the samples are
vented at room temperature for 7 days. Minimum of three letter size (A4) samples of the prepared
ah 20

materials as described above should be submitted for testing.

az 05,

Samples should not be touched with bare hands. Care shall be taken when preparing the samples to
avoid contact with oils or greases from the cutting tools or other environmental contaminants.
tim y
fa uar

The material shall be obtained no more than 24 ± 2 hours after production then stored in a clean area to
prevent possible production contamination from paint spray booths, exhaust gases, fumes, etc. It shall
not be placed in contact with other materials to eliminate cross contamination.
br

The storage area conditions should not exceed 23 ± 2ºC and 50 ± 20% RH. The parts should not be
Fe

exposed under direct solar light. The storage area should be clean and clear of any VOCs emissions.
on

The part must be wrapped after 14 ± 1 days storage under conditions identified above.
All materials must be wrapped in aluminum foil that is silicon free and sealed in a Polyethylene bag 14
days after the manufacturing date, prior to shipping. Unless otherwise specified in this standard no pre- or
post-treatment of the test samples besides the production process should be allowed.

Material for testing must be labelled with the correct information: including supplier, date of manufacture,
material identification, plant, location, sampling date, packaging date and ship date. The sample label
shall be provided on the outside of the packaging only, no labelling on the material for testing itself.
Page: 6/20
CS-13398
Change Level: K

7
Samples of the material per this standard shall be tested for conformity with the requirements of this

om 46
standard and approved by STELLANTIS Materials Engineering prior to start of delivery of production level
material.

.c 8
is 1
Any change to the material (manufacturing process, manufacturing location, etc.) requires a new approval

nt SD
of the product. It is the responsibility of the Material Supplier to provide STELLANTIS with documentation
of any changes and to apply for a new approval. If it was not agreed otherwise, the entire verification test
shall be repeated and documented by the supplier prior to the delivery of the changed material.

lla d:
te ri
For initial approval of raw materials, the data sheet in Annex D - Data Reporting Form has to be

.s se
completed and sent to the responsible STELLANTIS Materials Engineer. An editable version of this form
is found in the embedded object in Annex D.

al u
Unless otherwise indicated, for any given construction or resin grade only the darkest color of the material

rn ) -
to be supplied needs to be tested. The same goes for coatings; if the technology is the same the worst

te +1
case of the palette shall be tested. In the case of fabrics, leather and synthetic leather materials a
representative of each color family has to be tested.
ex TC
5.2 Material Testing Requirements
e@ (U

In many cases it is necessary to store the material in the laboratory before starting the test. The material
ln M

should remain securely sealed with the packaging in order to avoid any degradation or contamination
during the storage period.
ua P
ho 18

The materials shall not be stored for more than two weeks at the testing laboratory before the start of
emissions testing,
ic 3:

The material shall be tested within maximum five weeks after manufacture (the five weeks includes the
.b 0

two weeks conditioning, the one week for shipping/transportation to the testing lab and maximum two
ra 25

weeks for storage).

ah 20

The material shall be open from its initial packaging and conditioned for 24 ± 4 hours @ 23 ± 2 ºC and
50 ± 10% RH prior to testing.
az 05,

The approved testing laboratories shall perform the testing and analysis and send the final test report to
the requester within 2 weeks of the test.

All materials listed in Annex B must meet Fogging, Odor, Formaldehyde, Volatile Organic Compounds
and Measurable Volatiles of Interest emission requirements as described below.

Alternate method. The material supplier shall perform the testing based on testing availability in their
region according to either Part A or Part B requirements. The results obtained by either test method are
acceptable at the present time, until further notice.

The material supplier shall always verify with the responsible Stellantis VIAQ team member and /or with
the responsible Stellantis Materials Engineer on the applicability and acceptability of the testing to be
performed according to this standard.
