Transcripts
3 Let’s watch
Sky: There’s a lot of things I can do. There’s a lot of things I want to do.
Whatever it is, whether I’m skating or surfing, I do it with love and
happiness. My name is Sky and I’m 9 years old and I’m from Miyasaki,
Japan. I first started skateboarding when I was 2 or 3.
Ocean, Sky’s brother: You have to do this side.
Woman: Oh my gosh!
Bod Boyle: Hello, my name is Bod Doyle. I think I met Sky 3 years ago now I think
it was. I heard of Sky before I knew her actually, because I had seen
her popping up on some social media channels. This young small girl
with this brother- they were ripping.
Sky: Venice beach is pretty wild but it’s one of my favourite places in
America.
Sky: Excuse me?
Man: Yes ma’am?
Sky: Does he ever bite?
Man: No ma’am.
Sky’s dad: Sky! Don‘t cry now!
Sky: I’m really scared of animals, just so you know. It gets me more excited
if I’m scared of it. It pushes me to do it. I need to do it, it’s just so
exciting. I did it myself. No one made me. Today I’m trying to learn a
triple kickflip. Sometimes I’m afraid to fall. It’s kind of exciting if you
feel you’re going to fall. You’re gonna fall. If you don’t think you’re
going to fall, you’re not going to fall. Ohhhh! That’s crazy!

Sky: My biggest dream is to go to X games. X games is the biggest action
sports event in the world. They won’t invite me because they told me
I’m too young. But that’s the point. I want to inspire girls that even if
you’re 3 or 4 you can still do it. Just believe in yourself.
Bod Boyle: I have not seen someone quite like Sky. Not only is there a lot of raw
talent but there’s also this little excited kind of having fun person in
there. You really see it when she skates as far as she’s enjoying it and
it’s really rare to see that.
Sky: I like skating with people. I like surfing with people. I really want more
girls to skate and I really want more girls to have fun and just do it
for yourself. I started surfing since I was 4 probably, a little later. I
love to be in the water and I love surfing. I makes me feel like I’m in
the air. It makes me feel like I’m spraying like a mermaid. At Lowers,
you have to battle for the waves. The boys try and compete with me.
Sometimes it’s annoying. Sometimes it’s funny. There was this boy -
he pushed me in once. He tried to, but it didn’t work. He saw that I
didn’t catch the wave and he felt bad for me.
Sky: Tomorrow I’ll go back to Japan. I don’t know when I’m coming back
to America but when I’m here I have so much fun. Wherever I am I
try to focus on what I love because it makes me feel alive and happy.
My motto always is: be brave, be strong, have fun and do it because
you love it.

Key
1 Let’s play
5 mins.
Play a True-False game with your students. You may prepare different visuals of children doing
activities (or use the images presented), say e.g She can’t dance! and encourage the students
to answer by saying True!False! Lead the game until they seem confident, encourage them
to correct false sentences and then allow the students to lead.
2 Matching
5 mins.
Students match the word to its picture. Check the students’ understanding by pointing to
these items on the worksheet and asking What is it? , listening to what they answer: It’s a
(motto)... etc.
1. surfing 2. a big snake
3. a motto 4. a flip
3 Let’s watch
Part 1
5 mins.
Students watch the video and complete the true-false exercise. Before watching, give them
time to read the questions. As they watch, pause the video when an answer appears. It will
give them time to read and make their choice. When the video has finished, check their
answers by encouraging them to say their answers.

3. false 4. false
5. true 6. false
Part 2
5 mins.
Students watch the video again and complete the multi-choice exercise. Before watching, give
them time to read the questions. As they watch, pause the video when an answer appears. It
will give them time to read and make their choice. When the video has finished, check their
answers by encouraging them to say their answers.
1. a. 2. b. 3. c. 4. a.
5. c. 6. b. 7. b.
4 I’m good at this!
Part 1
5 mins.
This is an opportunity for the students to understand what is the same about activities around
the world. Allow them some time to think then write about their own activities. Then the
students can say their sentences.
Part 2
10 - 15 mins.
First, give the students time to draw or stick the picture of their activity. As they are doing this,
monitor and encourage them to say different sentences from the language box. When the
picture is ready, they can write their sentences. They don’t need to use all the language, only
writing what they feel confident with. Monitor and check their work. Correct mistakes relating
to spelling (eg basketbal - basketball) or language (He cans - He can or good at skateboard -
skateboarding). It is important they feel confident about their writing.

Students then work in pairs or move around the classroom. They show the picture of their
activity and say at least three sentences.
Extra activities to expand lesson to 60 minutes:
- Expand the first activity on page 1: students say sentences about themselves and others
correct the false sentences (they should remember from the survey in the last lesson).
- Play the video again with pauses to play a game. Pause the video before the vocabulary is
said, and allow the students to predict what will be said by the people. Then play so they can
check.
- Students group themselves according to which activities they can do. Say eg. basketball.
If they can play, they move to the left of the room, if not, to the right. Continue with other
activities.
