3.2. MAP INTERPRETATION

Question 3
Study the extract of the 1:50 000 topographic map (2821 CA Kanoneiland) and the extract of
the orthophoto map (2821 CA 4 Kanoneiland) provided to answer the following questions. The
area covered by the orthophoto map is indicated by the red square on the topographic map.

GENERAL INFORMATION ON KANONEILAND

The Orange River is South Africa's largest river. It originates in the


Drakensberg, from where it flows for about 2300 km from the east of
the country in a western direction to reach the sea at Alexander Bay.
Silt and sand deposits have resulted in the build-up of half-permanent
islands in the flow channel. Along with the possibility of heavy rains in
the catchment area, floods pose a major danger to the settlements
along the river. Farms in this area are cultivated intensively. Non-
perishable products are grown here because of large distances from the
large markets.
