2012 Scholarship Invitation Letter-1

The Felix Martinez Scholarship was created to honor Felix Martinez, a former teacher and coordinator who came from a modest background and worked to promote education. It awards $1,000 each to two high school seniors graduating in 2011 from certain districts who are immigrants or English language learners. Applicants must submit an essay and letter of recommendation by March 29th describing their journey and college plans. Winners will be announced at an awards banquet on April 27th.

FELIX MARTINEZ SCHOLARSHIP

About Felix Martinez: Felix Martinez was a teacher in Pasadena ISD who in his last years of service worked as a coordinator for Houston ISDs Multilingual Programs Department. He came from a modest Mexican-American family, learned English as a Second Language and was very active in professional organizations. He died in the late 80s, while still a young man. Today, in honor of Felix Martinezs achievements, HAABE offers scholarships to high school seniors to encourage them to higher education and the pursuit of a successful life no matter their beginnings. Qualifications: The applicant must be an immigrant and/or English Language Learner (ELL) student (any student who was in bilingual education or in ESL classes is therefore, eligible). The applicant student must be a May/June 2011 graduate from a school in one of the following districts: Fort Bend, Houston, La Porte, Pearland or Spring Branch Application Process: Interested seniors should submit an essay, telling their personal story and college plans, along with a transcript and a letter of reference from a teacher or counselor, by Thursday, March 29, 2012 to: HAABE Scholarship Committee Attention: Patricia Ortiz 7431 Elm St. Houston TX, 77023 Announcement of Winner: This year, we will be awarding the Felix Martinez Scholarship to two exceptional winners. Each winner will receive $1,000 to help them with college costs. HAABE will announce the 2 scholarship winners at this years HAABE Bilingual/ESL Teacher of the Year banquet on Friday, April 27, 2012 at the Hilton Americas Hotel in Downtown.
