Weight Management
Achieving and Maintaining Healthy Weight

Weight management is a critical aspect of maintaining overall


health and well-being. A healthy weight ensures that the body
functions optimally, reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as
diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disorders, and certain
cancers. Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight involves
balancing energy intake (calories consumed through food) with
energy expenditure (calories burned through physical activity and
metabolism).

The first step in weight management is understanding one’s Body


Mass Index (BMI), which classifies individuals into underweight,
normal weight, overweight, or obese categories based on their
height and weight. However, BMI is not always an accurate
measure for athletes or individuals with high muscle mass, as
muscle weighs more than fat. Therefore, other measures like waist
circumference, body fat percentage, and waist-to-hip ratio are also
used.

To achieve a healthy weight, dietary modifications are essential.


This includes consuming nutrient-dense foods such as fruits,
vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats while
avoiding processed foods, sugary beverages, and trans fats. Portion

changes rather than short-term fixes. Regular monitoring of
progress, setting realistic goals, and seeking professional guidance
from dietitians or nutritionists can help sustain long-term success.
Emotional eating and stress should also be addressed, as they often
lead to unhealthy eating patterns.

Physical Activity Guidelines and Physical Activity Pyramid

Physical activity plays a pivotal role in weight management and


overall fitness. The World Health Organization (WHO)
recommends at least 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity
aerobic activity or 75–150 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity per
week for adults. Additionally, muscle-strengthening activities
involving major muscle groups should be performed twice a week.

The Physical Activity Pyramid provides a visual representation of


how different types of physical activities contribute to overall
fitness. At the base of the pyramid are daily activities like walking,
climbing stairs, and household chores—these form the foundation
of an active lifestyle. Moving up the pyramid, we find recreational
activities such as cycling, swimming, and dancing, followed by
aerobic exercises like running and brisk walking. Strength training
and flexibility exercises occupy the upper levels, emphasizing their
importance but lesser frequency compared to daily activities.

Balancing these activities ensures holistic fitness. For example,


aerobic exercises improve cardiovascular health, strength training
builds muscle mass and boosts metabolism, and flexibility exercises
enhance mobility and reduce injury risk. Combining various forms
of exercise keeps routines engaging and prevents monotony.

Health Effects of Obesity and Overweight

Obesity and overweight pose significant health risks, affecting both


physical and mental well-being. Excess body fat increases the strain
on vital organs, leading to conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart
disease, stroke, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, and certain cancers.
Visceral fat, which accumulates around internal organs, is
particularly harmful as it releases inflammatory markers that
disrupt metabolic processes.

Psychologically, obesity can lead to low self-esteem, depression,


anxiety, and social isolation due to societal stigma. Children and
adolescents who are overweight may face bullying, impacting their
academic performance and emotional development.

Preventing obesity requires early intervention through education

offer short-term results, they can lead to nutritional deficiencies,
muscle loss, and rebound weight gain when discontinued. Below
are four popular fad diets:

Keto Diet

The ketogenic (keto) diet focuses on drastically reducing


carbohydrate intake while increasing fat consumption to induce
ketosis—a metabolic state where the body burns fat for fuel instead
of glucose. Typically, the macronutrient breakdown is 70–80% fat,
10–20% protein, and 5–10% carbohydrates.

Proponents claim the keto diet aids rapid weight loss, improves
mental clarity, and stabilizes blood sugar levels. It has also shown
promise in managing epilepsy in children. However, the diet's
restrictive nature makes it challenging to follow long-term.
Potential side effects include "keto flu" (fatigue, headaches,
irritability during the initial adaptation phase), nutrient
deficiencies, constipation, and increased cholesterol levels.

DASH Diet
