Unit
5 Past simple (I did)
A Study this example:

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was an Austrian

musician and composer. He lived from 1756 to
1791. He started composing at the age of five
and wrote more than 600 pieces of music.
He was only 35 years old when he died.
lived/started/wrote/was/died are all past simple.

B Very often the past simple ends in -ed (regular verbs):

I work in a travel agency now. Before that I worked in a department store.
They invited us to their party, but we decided not to go.
The police stopped me on my way home last night.
Laura passed her exam because she studied very hard.
For spelling (stopped, studied etc.), see Appendix 6.
But many verbs are irregular. The past simple does not end in -ed. For example:
write ³ wrote Mozart wrote more than 600 pieces of music.
see ³ saw We saw Alice in town a few days ago.
go ³ went I went to the cinema three times last week.
shut ³ shut It was cold, so I shut the window.
For a list of irregular verbs, see Appendix 1.

C In questions and negative sentences we use did/didn’t + infinitive (enjoy/see/go etc.):

I enjoyed you enjoy? I enjoy
she saw did she see? she didn’t see
they went they go? they go

I enjoyed the party a lot. Did you enjoy it?

How many people did they invite to the wedding?
I didn’t buy anything because I didn’t have any money.
‘Did you go out?’ ‘No, I didn’t.’
Sometimes do is the main verb in the sentence (did you do?, I didn’t do):
What did you do at the weekend? (not What did you at the weekend?)
I didn’t do anything. (not I didn’t anything)

D The past of be (am/is/are) is was/were:

I/he/she/it was/wasn’t was I/he/she/it?
we/you/they were/weren’t were we/you/they?

I was annoyed because they were late.

Was the weather good when you were on holiday?
They weren’t able to come because they were so busy.
I wasn’t hungry, so I didn’t eat anything.
Did you go out last night or were you too tired?

Activity 2

Read the story and answer the following questions.

A DISASTROUS DINNER

Last Friday, Mrs. Anderson planned to have a delicious dinner. She bought a
T-bone steak and some cream and apples for an apple pie. When she
came home from the shops she put her shopping on the table. While she
was setting the table, her two pets sat underneath it and watched her. Then
she went to the kitchen to make the pastry for the pie. She was a little
forgetful so she didn’t realize the steak, cream and apples were still on the
table. While she was making the pastry, the dog jumped on a chair and
looked longingly at the steak. At last it took the steak in its mouth and
jumped off the chair, just as Mrs. Anderson was coming back into the dining
room. Mrs. Anderson screamed, but the dog ran into the garden. She ran
after the dog. While she was chasing the dog, the cat jumped on the table
and started drinking the cream. Mrs. Anderson didn’t manage to catch the
dog, and she came back into the dining room. When she saw the cat, she
shrieked, and the cat got such a fright that it jumped a meter into the air,
and leapt out the window. Mrs. Anderson threw her broom at the cat, but
she missed, and broke the window. At the same time she overbalanced
and put her hand in the cream, spilling it all over the tablecloth. Poor Mrs.
Anderson - she had no dinner, only a dirty tablecloth and a broken window.

Glossary: set the table - put knives and forks, plates, salt etc. on the table., underneath -
under it., longingly - e.g. the dog wanted it but knew it couldn’t have it., shriek - louder
than scream., get a fright - suddenly (not the same as be frightened)., overbalance - to
lose your balance and fall.

2. Why did she buy cream and apples?
3. When did her pets watch her?
4. Where did she leave the steak?

Comparative & Superlative Adjectives
To make the comparative form of adjectives (like 'bigger' or 'more expensive')
and the superlative form (like 'biggest' or 'most expensive'), first we need to
know how many syllables are in the adjective.

Adjectives with one syllable

Usually if an adjective has only one syllable, we add 'er' to make the
comparative form. We add 'est' to make the superlative form.

Positive adjectives Comparative adjectives Superlative adjectives

clean cleaner cleanest
cold Colder coldest
Small Smaller smallest
Young younger youngest
tall taller tallest

There are some spelling changes. If there is one vowel followed by one
consonant at the end of the adjective, we often double the consonant.

Positive adjectives Comparative adjectives Superlative adjectives

wet wetter wettest
big bigger biggest
hot hotter hottest
thin thinner thinnest

If the adjective ends in 'y', this often changes to 'i'.

Positive adjectives Comparative adjectives Superlative adjectives

dry drier driest

English Supplementary worksheet: Pratom 4-2-2561: Comparative & Superlative Adjectives------>> Page 2

57
If the adjective ends in 'e', we don't add another 'e', just 'r'.

Positive adjectives Comparative adjectives Superlative adjectives

nice nicer nicest
large larger largest

There are a few adjectives that we have to use 'more' or 'most' with, even
though they only have one syllable. We CAN'T add 'er' or 'est'.

Positive adjectives Comparative adjectives Superlative adjectives

fun more fun most fun
real more real most real
wrong more wrong most wrong

Adjectives with two syllables

For adjectives with two syllables we generally use 'more' or 'most'.

Positive adjectives Comparative adjectives Superlative adjectives

careful more careful most careful
bored more bored most bored

But some two syllable adjectives can take 'er' or 'est'. It's also fine to use
'more' (for the comparative) or 'most' (for the superlative).

Positive adjectives Comparative adjectives Superlative adjectives

clever cleverer cleverest
simple simpler Simplest
narrow narrower narrowest
quiet quieter quietest

English Supplementary worksheet: Pratom 4-2-2561: Comparative & Superlative Adjectives------>> Page 3

58
Adjectives with two syllables that end in 'y' usually can add 'er' or 'est'
(‘y’ generally changes to ‘I’). It's also fine to use 'more' or 'most'.

Positive adjectives Comparative adjectives Superlative adjectives

dirty dirtier dirtiest
pretty prettier prettiest
happy happier happiest
ugly uglier ugliest

Adjectives with more than two syllables

Adjectives with more than two syllables can only make their comparative by
using 'more' and their superlative by using 'most'.

Positive adjectives Comparative adjectives Superlative adjectives

beautiful more beautiful most beautiful
intelligent more intelligent most intelligent
interesting more interesting most interesting
expensive more expensive most expensive

Irregular adjectives
There are also some irregular adjectives. We just need to learn these forms.
Positive adjectives Comparative adjectives Superlative adjectives
good better best
bad worse worst
far further furthest
little less Least
much more most

Tema 6

PRESENT PERFECT
Presente Perfecto

Un componente esencial del presente perfecto son los verbos en participio pasado. Los
cuales traducidos al español , terminan en : “ado”, “ido”, “to”, “so” y “cho”.

Ejemplo: Observa los diferentes tiempos verbales:

Present Past Past Participle

Do did done = hecho

Drink drank drunk = bebido
Go went gone = ido
Sing sang sung = cantado
Write wrote written = escrito
Ride rode ridden = montado
Buy bought bought = comprado
*play played played = jugado

*Nota que los verbos regulares (los que en pasado terminan en “ed”) son exactamente
igual en participio pasado

El presente perfecto se conjuga de la siguiente manera:

Persona + has / have + verbo en participio pasado + complemento

He
She has eaten in a restaurant all this week.
It

I
We
You have eaten in a restaurant all this week.
they

La traducción de la primera oración sería:

Él ha comido en un restaurante toda esta semana.

90
Cabe hacer notar que en el presente perfecto el “have” no se traduce como el verbo “tener”,
sino como el verbo “haber”.

¿En qué casos se usa el presente perfecto?

1.- from past to present
2.- repeated activities
3.- unusual activities

1.- FROM PAST TO PRESENT

Un uso típico del "present perfect" es para describir acciones que empezaron en el
pasado y que aún no han finalizado. Por ejemplo:

 I have lived in this city since 1980. He vivido en esta ciudad desde 1980:

Implica que he vivido en esta ciudad desde el 1980 y sigo viviendo en el presente.

 I have played tennis since my childhood. He jugado tenis desde mi infancia y sigo
jugando.

Si la acción hubiera ya finalizado entonces habría que utilizar el "past simple":

 I lived in this city for 10 years. Yo viví en esta ciudad 10 años: pero ya no vivo ahí.
 I played tennis for many years. Yo jugué al tenis muchos años: pero ya no juego.

2.- REPEATED ACTIONS

Acciones que se han repetido varias veces

 I have seen TITANIC like ten times. I love that movie!

He visto TITANIC como diez veces. Amo esa película.

Examples:

 She has cleaned her room three times this month

 He has run in the park twice this week.
 I have been in English courses four times this year

3. UNUSUAL EVENTS

Para preguntar acerca de eventos inusuales se usa el presente perfecto, generalmente en

forma de preguntas.

91
 Have you ever ridden a horse?
Has alguna vez montado a caballo

 Have you ever eaten Chinese food? Yes, I have /

 Have you ever drunk “Vodka”? No, I haven``t
 Have you ever eaten “Japanese food”?
 Have you ever climbed a mountain ?

Presente perfecto negativo

La forma negativa se forma con la partícula de negación "not" entre el auxiliar y el verbo
principal:

I Yo no he hecho la tarea.
You have not done the homework. Tú/ Usted./ Ustedes no han hecho la tarea
We Nosotros no hemos hecho la tarea.

He Él no ha hecho la tarea.
She has not done the homework. Ella no ha hecho la tarea

Presente perfecto interrogativo

La forma interrogativa se construye con el verbo auxiliar: has/ have al comienzo de la oración,
seguido del sujeto y del verbo principal en pasado participio:

I ¿He estado en Sevilla alguna vez?

Have you ever been in Seville? ¿Has estado en Sevilla alguna vez?
we ¿Hemos estado en Sevilla alguna vez?
They ¿Han estado en Sevilla alguna vez?

he ¿Ha estado él en Sevilla alguna vez?

Has she ever been in Seville? ¿Ha estado ella en Sevilla alguna vez?
it ¿Ha estado en Sevilla alguna vez?
