FESTIVAL
Solution
I have come to a rough conclusion of what my final product will be, it will be based around
accommodation as I have noticed a pattern. Accommodation covers several aspects to a festival
such as comfort experience and convenience therefore I think it is an important role at festivals that
should be widely explorable. One of the main problems people experience at festivals is their
sleeping or experience of staying over at festivals because although many people to try to pull all
nighters its not possible for 3-5 days straight which is why it is perfect to a have a comfy place to
sleep when you are exhausted and probably more. I think creating better accommodation will
greater enhance the experience people have at festivals. Accommodation can also very broadly
incorporate other problems such as having intimacy with your friends while still being in a crowd, as
well as being protected from bad weathers especially in the UK.
Design Brief
My design brief is to design and manufacture a product which would provide comfort and
shelter for people attending festivals. Research has shown that solutions for shelter at
festivals are either very basic in the form on tents or very expensive rentals such as
Airstream caravans. The weather at festivals can be unpredictable; therefore festival
goers require some form of shelter. Many festivals also last a few days which mean
people need overnight shelter.
The target user for this type of shelter are young and stylish professionals who would
attend festivals with their friends. They are very trend aware and like quirky products
which are high quality but provide good value for money. They are heavy social media
users and look for opportunities to share their experiences via online platforms such as
lnstagram.
The solution I am planning to design will be a scaled down model of a tipee type shelter.
The prototype will have to be a scale model due to restrictions on budget and space.
The idea is that the scale model could be used as a sample to show to festival
organisers who could then rent the full size product out at their festival.
The product will need to be functional but aesthetically pleasing and provide a pleasing
design to trend conscious users. It should be as sustainable as possible as the user
group are environmentally aware.

however can be seen as quite simple.

Design 3 was also quite liked as people said they
liked the 'woven effect'.
However, I personally dont find it that interesting

I think it s missing something perhaps a different

Design 4
Everyone I asked chose design 4 as they thought it
really caught their eyes to be different to the rest, the
shape was said to be original and interesting and the
added pattern in side was also very liked.
I really like the honey comb effect it has as I have
combined the theme of nature with the geometric/
electronic theme of music festivals. I really like the
combination of colours as well but I may try several
different colour combinations.

RESEARCH ON SMART MATERIALS
For the fabric of my prototype I have decided to do some research on smart inks that
could add a special visual effect to my product as it will be at a festival, where aesthetics Chosen ink - Photochromic

This would mean that during the day as light intensity changes would change
the brightness of the parts of the pattern that are highlighted
Hydrochromic ink Hydrochromic ink darkens, when in contact with water, therefore this could be
interesting in the rain, which would only work well in very rainy countries such
as the UK I have chosen to use photochromic ink as this is relies on sunlight

visible during the day, whereas inks like hydrochromic ink and

I will I highlight only certain parts of my design to stand out against the
rest on the sunlight, this will add a visual effect and will be more
visually appealing to passer-bys.
Using this ink could be quite interesting as my pattern would change hues at
different points of the day due to temperature changes throughout the day,
therefore it would be a different colour on the morning, at noon and at night.

SAMPLING
I have started to prototype different parts of my product in order to figure out how parts will fit
together realistically. I call this process 'progression through trial'.
28
SAMPLING
After my sampling my woodwork, I started to sample my textiles and patterns to be printed
onto them as well as the attachment of the base.

After having sampled all my different joint I have chosen the
