ABSTRACT

In modern times, environmental education forms the basis for our understanding of the world
and our role in it. It has been increasingly recognized that environmental education can be
used as an approach to address issues associated with climate change, biodiversity loss and
other forms of environmental degradation. This paper takes a comprehensive look at the
concept of environmental education, highlighting it’s objectives, the potential scope of it and
the strategies to implement it not only in the school curriculum but also outside the
educational institutions.

INRODUCTION

The environment has a major role in both the survival of life on earth and the well-being of
all species. Earth is home to a wide variety of life forms, and all livings beings depend on the
environment for basic necessities including food, oxygen, water and other resources.
Therefore it is everyone’s duty to protect and preserve the environment. Unfortunately, a lot
of people don’t know what defines good and harmful environmental practices or the main
environmental issues that the globe is currently experiencing. Because of this our planet
continues to be damaged on a daily basis. The destruction of the environment is a result of a
lack of awareness and understanding of its importance. For this reason, environmental
education is essential. Environment education has assumed greater importance for generating
the required human resources. It plays a vital role in natural resources management,
preventing pollution, preserving the ecosystem and balancing it in entirety, controlling water
budget, preventing chronic problems of soil erosion and flood etc. Thus, in order to improve
and sustain the above functions, a strong education research, extension and application
system is essential with the global changing concept of natural resource management and
environment conservation, there is a need to evolve a sound education system to take training
of human resources to meet the increasing challenges.
CONCEPT

We will understand first what is environment ?

ENVIRONMENT

The word “environment” derives from the French word “environ” which means “surround”.
The environment refers to the surrounding or conditions in which a person, animal or plant
lives or operates. It encompasses various factors both living and non-living, that interact and
influence one another.

ENVIORNMENTAL EDUCATION

The concept of environment education emerged in the seventies and the period was called as
the decade of environmental education. During this period the world realized that
environmental concerns and awareness could be spread only through a mass environment
education program. The concept of environment education emerged from the Stockholm
conference organized by the united nation in 1972. Recommendations of the conference
emphasized on the conduct of ‘formal’ and ‘mass’ environmental education programs.
Educate masses about environment and its components, is supposed to develop critical
thinking, analytical and problem solving skills in human. It is also instrumental in developing
knowledge and insights in human to improve their living quality on Earth.

Environmental education is basically an awareness program in which participation of

everyone is compulsory .Environmental education is an approach to study of interaction with
the natural environment. It is a process in which individuals gain awareness of their
environment and acquire knowledge, skill, value and experiences which will enable to act
individually and collectively to solve present and future environmental problems like- climate
change, pollution, soil erosion.

Environmental education implies establishing ecological equilibrium which means proper

use and conservation of resources and also control of environment pollution. It is considered
to be a global process which is continuous and lifelong.
OBJECTIVES OF ENVIONMENTAL EDUCATION

Raise awareness

Environmental education aims to increase awareness of environmental issues ,such as climate

change, biodiversity loss, pollution and resources development. It seeks to help individuals
understanding the impact of human activities on the environment.

Foster understanding

Environmental education promotes understanding of ecological systems and the

interdependence between humans and the natural world.

Encourage critical thinking

Environmental education encourages critical thinking and the ability to analyze

environmental problems from multiple perspectives. It enables to evaluate information,
consider different viewpoints and develop sustainable solutions.

Promote responsible action

Environmental education motivates individuals to take responsible action to address

environmental challenges. It empowers individual to make sustainable choices in their daily
lives, advocate for environmental protection and contribute to the wellbeing of the planet.

SCOPE OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

The discipline include in environmental education are-

(1) Environmental science :

It deals with the scientific study of environmental system (air, water, soil and land),
the inherent or induced changes on organisms and the environmental damages
incurred as a result of human interaction with the environment.

(2) Environmental engineering :

It deals with the study of technical process involve in the protection of environment
from the potentially deleterious effects of human activity and improving the
environmental quality for the health and well beings of humans.
(3) Environmental management :

Environment management has two aspect –

(a) Physical aspect:

It refers to natural and manmade aspects which include air, water, land, climate,
etc. in natural physical aspects whereas man made physical aspect cover things
such as roads, buildings, bridges, house, etc. created by them.

(b) Socio cultural aspect:

Socio cultural aspects are man- made. Social practices, traditions, rules and laws
and other religious place etc. human being have created them with their effort.

SCOPE OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AT SCHOOL

Primary level :-

 Introduction to environment and natural resources

 Basic concept of ecology and conservation

Secondary level:-

 Environmental science and ecology

 Waste management and recycling

 Climate change and sustainability

 Biodiversity conservation biology

Higher secondary level:-

 Advance environmental science and ecology

 Sustainable development

 Climate change mitigation and adaptation

 Environmental policy and law

STRATEGIES

 Allowing the state governments to prepare their own syllabi based on a framework
provided by the NCERT with each state ensuring that the syllabi cater effectively to
all the eco-zone of the concerned state.

 Providing the states with separates syllabi for environmental education prepared by
the NCERT.

 Narration of events, experiences and stories

 Assignments and projects

 Field trips and visits

 Establishing eco club

 Role play and dram

 Awareness program

 Discussions

 Quizzes and tests

CONCLUSION:-

Environmental education is a dynamic process. The priority of education is to develop

caution mind of people about their total surrounding. Its main task is to impart proper
knowledge and training to solve various problems of our environment systematically. In
order to enable people to enjoy good health and high quality of life, it is vital to prevent
harmful effects to human health and damage to the environment cause by anthropogenic
activities.
