The Fruit of the Spirit - Gentleness

Dear friend,
I am thrilled to paint with you and to learn about the Fruit of the Spirit
together!

In this class, you’ll find a 14-minute watercolor tutorial for how to paint
a grapefruit—and you’ll learn about the fruit of gentleness as you paint!
This tutorial is designed for both beginner watercolor artists (ages 5 and
up) and experienced artists. At the end of this guide, I've included a
printable coloring page so that younger siblings can join in, even if they
aren’t quite ready to paint.

In this guide, you'll also find the pencil outline of a grapefruit. Please
note that this is optional. In the video tutorial, I demonstrate how to
draw the outline in pencil before painting. But if your student prefers a About me
pre-drawn outline, you can print it directly onto watercolor paper by
loading the paper into the rear feed of an inkjet printer and selecting Hi! I'm Whitney. I'm a wife, mom, and artist.

More than anything, I hope you enjoy creating art with your children painting because of the easy-to-set-up supplies
while learning more about the Fruit of the Spirit. I pray this class will and endless possibilities. If you haven't already,
be an act of worship and a source of delight for you and your family! I hope you fall in love, too!

In addition, I have a Bible degree from Moody

SUPPLIES
Watercolor supplies do not have to be expensive to work well, but I recommend investing in something a step up from Crayola washable
paints and printer paper to yield beautiful results. If you already have watercolor supplies, feel free to use them! If not, here are the
supplies I use and recommend for this class:

☐ Round watercolor brushes - I recommend purchasing a small set of round brushes in sizes ranging from #2 to #12. This
will give you the variety you need to paint the subjects in this guide, and if you have multiple students, there will be plenty of
brushes to share. The brushes I used throughout this class are available for purchase in our shop.

☐ Watercolor paint - The paints I use for this class are available for purchase in our shop; they are highly pigmented and will
last for a long time. But any watercolor pan set with at least eight basic colors will work well for this study, so feel free to use
what you have.

☐ Watercolor paper - I recommend cold press paper. I like to cut a 9x12" piece of watercolor in half and use 6x9" sized paper
for each painting. Strathmore, Canson, or Arches are all great brands to try.

☐ A glass of water for rinsing your brush

☐ A paper towel for blotting your brush

☐ A white plate or palette for mixing colors

☐ A pencil for sketching the designs

☐ Optional: Washi tape or painter’s tape to tape the watercolor paper to your work surface
GENTLENESS: GRAPEFRUIT

Read Matthew 11:28-30, Ephesians 4:2

What comes to mind when you hear the word "gentle"? Perhaps your mom told you, “Be gentle!” the first time you
held a baby or petted a tiny puppy. However, gentleness doesn’t imply weakness. It means being aware of your
own strength and controlling it for the benefit of someone or something.

Consider a mighty lion. He possesses the strength to take down an elephant, yet he is gentle enough to pick up his
young cub by the neck and carry him home.

Our God embodies this same quality. Hebrews 1:3 tells us that Jesus upholds all things by the word of His power.
At the same time, He is so gentle that the Bible describes Him as our Shepherd, carrying us close to His heart and
gently leading those with young (Isaiah 40:11). And in Matthew 11:29, Jesus tells His followers that He is "gentle
and lowly in heart." Of all the words He could have used to describe Himself, He tells us that He is gentle. Isn't
that a comforting thought?

Read Proverbs 15:4. How does this verse describe someone with a gentle tongue?
