B. Define the terms-
a) crystallization b) electroplating c) galvanization d)
C. State true or false.
1. Elements cannot be broken down into simpler forms of matter.
2. Fe +CuSO4—-> FeSO4+Cu is a displacement reaction.
3. Products undergo a chemical change in a reaction. ————.
4. Magnesium ribbon burns with a dazzling white flame.
5. Burning of magnesium is a permanent and reversible change.

c) exothermic and endothermic reaction
d) combination and decomposition reaction
2. What two things would happen if the gas produced in the above case is passed through lime water?
3. Write chemical equation of:
(a) Reaction between baking soda and vinegar.
(b) Reaction when the emitted gas is passed through lime water.
4. What does a formula of an element and formula of a compound represent?

9. Case study
a) Dissolve about a teaspoonful of copper sulphate in about half a cup of water in a beaker. You should
get a blue-coloured solution. Drop a nail into the solution. Wait for half an hour or so. Observe the
colour of the solution. The colour of the solution from blue to green is due to the formation of iron
sulphate, a new substance. You will observe the brown deposit on the iron nail, another new
substance. A change in which one or more new substances are formed is called a chemical change. A
chemical change is also called a chemical reaction.
1) What is the common name of copper sulphate?
2) Which new substance deposits on the nail?
3) Write the chemical reaction of a given activity.
4) Define chemical change.
5) Add a few drops of blue-coloured ink in water. Is it a chemical change?
b) Chemical reactions takes place around us all the time. When a chemical reaction takes place ,it is
accompanied by one or more of the following characteristics such as evolution of a gas, change of
colour, formation of a precipitate, change of state and changes in energy. They are also classified into
different types: combination, decomposition, single displacement , double displacement and oxidation-
reduction reactions.
1. Under which two conditions do decomposition reactions normally take place?
2. Give one example each of a chemical reaction showing the evolution of a gas.
3. Distinguish between endothermic reactions and exothermic reactions.
10. Assertion reasoning questions.
1. Assertion (A) : Formation of rust is a chemical change.
Reason (R) : For formation of rust, iron must be exposed to air and water.
2. Assertion- carbon dioxide + lime water gives calcium carbonate + water.
Reason- the change in which one or more new substances are formed is called a physical change.
3. Assertion (A) - Taps and bicycle handles are usually chromium plated.
Reason(R) - Coating a layer of chromium prevents rusting of iron articles.
