Social media has evolved considerably to become one of the most significant
parts of our lives, especially after the pandemic. With the limited options we
had to interact with people, the internet undeniably played a big role for us
with all the platforms it had. We have been exposed to a new normal wherein
we have the internet to rely on for certain aspects of our lives, the biggest
being communication with other people through social media platforms.
These platforms collect our data and information which brings up issues
regarding breaching of privacy. Personally, I do not think that it is necessary
for these socializing platforms to acquire our data especially if it is
supposedly to be used for maintaining a better system for their programs.
The information that we willingly give out to these platforms brings risks to
the security of our privacy if not reliable. It is possible that our data could be
mishandled if given to the wrong set of hands. When information is misused,
it could lead to bigger issues such as leaking of information, identity theft,
violation of privacy, and more.
In times like today, there have been many cases that tackle the issues I have
previously stated which have something to do with social media privacy
violations. Is this not the reason why political measures have been taken
regarding these privacy issues? The Data Privacy Act was implemented
specifically with the purpose of protecting the information of users online. It
has been made because of the potential risks that come with the collection
of our information and data, particularly if it contains personal information
such as our legal name and address.
Contrary to my argument, it could be said that the collection of user data is
used for many different reasons such as algorithms and a better user
experience for all individuals. As though this may be a factor as to why they
acquire our data, I still do not believe that it is necessary. Social media
platforms were made for all individuals to connect and interact with each
other even without having to be physically together. A good connection to
other people on the internet does not require us to give out our personal
details. These platforms were made to serve as a space for people to interact
with one another and express themselves.
To summarize this essay, with all that I have said and from my own
viewpoint, social media platforms should refrain if not ban from the collection
of each user’s data especially those that are personal. In addition to my
claims, as though these platforms were made with different ideas in mind
and have different purposes, they are made to serve as a safe space for
everyone to share their ideas, thoughts, etc. They are made to serve as a
more efficient and accessible way to connect and communicate with people
all across the world. It should not be something that could cause risks to the
privacy of its users.
