COMPUTER SOFTWARE
1. System Software
A system software helps the user and the hardware to function and
communicate with each other. This software aids you to communicate with the
computer without knowing how to speak the computer's language. It is not possible
for the user to use any computer or mobile device without having an operating system
software.
When you turn on the computer, the system software gets initialized and gets
loaded within the memory of the system. The system software runs within the
background and isn't employed by the end-users. this can be the rationale why
system software is additionally called ‘low-level software’.
Figure shows icons of different types of system software.
Device Drivers: They operate and control devices and peripherals connected into a
computer. Drivers are important because they allow the devices to perform their
designated tasks. They translate the commands of an Operating System for the
Hardware or devices, assigning duties. Some examples of device drivers are:
Printer Driver
Mouse Driver
Network Card
Utility: Utility software is meant to manage the performance of your hardware and
application software installed on your computer, to confirm they work optimally.
Some features of utility software include:
Antivirus and security software
File compressor
Disk cleaner
Disk defragmentation software
Data backup software
2. Application Software. There are many application software that can be used to
perform different tasks. The amount of such apps keeps increasing with
technological advances and therefore the evolving needs of the users. These software
types are categorized into different groups, as shown within the following table:
Word processing software: Tools that are used Microsoft Word, WordPad,
to create word sheets and type documents etc. AppleWorks and Notepad
Netscape Navigator, MS
Internet Browsers: Used to access and view
Internet Explorer, and
websites.
Google Chrome
Microsoft Outlook, Gmail,
Email Programs: Software used for emailing.
Apple Mail
Another classification of the software is based on their availability and shareability.
These includes:
1. Freeware
Freeware software is available without any cost. Any user can download it from the
internet and use it without paying any fee. However, freeware does not provide any
freedom for modifying the software or charging a fee for its distribution.
Some well-known examples of freeware are:
Google Chrome
Skype
Instagram
Snapchat
Adobe reader
2. Shareware
It is a software that is freely distributed to users on a trial basis. It usually comes
with a time limit and when the time limit expires, the user is asked to pay for the
continued services.
Some examples of Shareware that you must be familiar with are:
Adobe PhotoShop
Adobe Illustrator
Netflix App
Matlab
McAfee Antivirus
3. Open-source
This is a type of software that has an open-source code that can be used by all users.
It can be modified and shared with anyone for any purpose.
Common examples of open source software used by programmers are:
LibreOffice
PHP
GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP)
4. Closed-source Software
They are also known as Closed-source software. These types of applications are
usually paid and have intellectual property rights or patents over the source code.
The use of these is very restricted and usually, the source code is preserved and kept
as a secret.
ACTIVITIES
Activity I. WORD SEARCH. Circle the word from the list in the puzzle. The words
can go in any direction.
Activity II. List down commonly used software in your mobile phones.
