Hockey is a team sport that is played on a field or ice rink. It involves two opposing teams using
curved sticks to drive a ball (in field hockey) or a puck (in ice hockey) into the opponent’s net.

Field Hockey: Played on grass or artificial turf.
Ice Hockey: Played on ice with skates.
History of Hockey in Nigeria:
Field Hockey was introduced to Nigeria during the colonial era by British administrators and
Christian missionaries. The first game was played in Lagos in 1928.
The Nigeria Hockey Federation (NHF) governs the sport in the country.
Ice Hockey: Ice hockey was introduced in Nigeria in the late 1990s by expatriates. The Nigeria
Ice Hockey Federation was formed in 2001, and the country’s first ice hockey league began in
2003. Nigeria participated in its first international ice hockey tournament in 2007.
Facilities and Equipment of Hockey:
