gently in a water bath. A 5% solution of alkaline
potassium permanganate is added first drop by drop
to this solution, then in excess.

(i) State the role of alkaline potassium

permanganate in this reaction. What happens on
adding it in excess?

(iii) Write chemical equation of this reaction. (2020)

(i) Which solution has highest concentration of H+ ions?
(ii) Which solution has the lowest concentration of H+ ions?
(b) How concentrated sulphuric acid can be diluted? Describe the process.

(Board Term I, 2014)

(a) (i) The solution having lower pH will have more hydrogen ion
concentration. Hence, solution ‘A’ will have highest H+ ion concentration.

(ii) Solution C i.e., pH = 5 has the lowest concentration of H+ ions.

(b) Mixing of an acid with water is called dilution. This
process is highly exothermic and therefore, acid is
always added to the water not water to acid. The
process for diluting concentrated sulphuric acid is :
(i) Take about 10 mL of water in a beaker.
(ii) Add concentrated sulphuric acid dropwise to water
and swirl the beaker slowly.
What is cinnabar? How is metal extracted from cinnabar? Explain
briefly. Write the chemical equation too.

Ans : Cinnabar (HgS) is an ore of mercury.

HgS(s) + O2 (g) -------> 2Hg(l) + SO2 (g)

Cinnabar, on roasting gives Mercury and sulphur

dioxide. Mercury can be purified by the process of
distillation.

If a plant is kept covered with a polythene sheet, we notice some
water drops on the inner side of the sheet after some time.

What are they due to?

Name and define the process.

What is the significance of this process in plants and in nature?

How does transpiration help in upward movement of water from

roots to leaves? [Delhi 2015]
If a plant is kept covered with a polythene
sheet, we notice some water drops on the
inner side of the sheet after sometime due to
transpiration.

The loss of water in the form of vapour from

the aerial parts of the plant is known as
transpiration.

This process helps in the absorption and

upward movement of water and minerals
dissolved in it from roots to the leaves.

It also helps in temperature regulation.

it.

State the difference if any between these two images.

(AI2014)
A concave mirror can produce a magnified image of an
object when object is placed:

(1) In between its pole and its focus

(2) In between its focus and its centre of curvature.

Difference,between these two images:

The image produced in first case will be virtual and
erect.
The image produced in second case will be real and
inverted.

What are soaps and detergents chemically? Explain the action of cleaning by soaps.

(Foreign 2012)

What are detergents chemically? List two demerits of using detergents for cleansing.
(AI 2012)

What is the difference between the chemical composition of soaps and detergents?
State in brief the action of soaps in removing an oily spot from a shirt. Why are soaps
not considered suitable for washing where water is hard? (Delhi 2012)

What is the difference between the molecules of soaps and detergents, chemically?
Explain the cleansing action of soaps. (Delhi 2015)

Soaps and detergents are both, types of salts. State the difference between the two.
Write the mechanism of the cleansing action of soaps. Why do soaps not form lather
(foam) with hard water? Mention any two problems that arise due to the use of
detergents instead of soaps. (Delhi 2017, AI 2015)
The molecules of soap are sodium or potassium
salts of long-chain carboxylic acids.

CLEANING EFFECT OF SOAPS:

Most dirt is oily in nature and oil does not

dissolve in water. The ionic-end of soap interacts
with water while the carbon chain interacts with
oil.

The soap molecules, thus form structures called

micelles where one end of the molecules is
towards the oil droplet while the ionic-end faces
outside.

This forms an emulsion in water. The soap micelle

thus helps in pulling out the dirt in water and we
can wash our clothes clean
The molecules of soap are sodium or potassium salts
of long-chain carboxylic acids. Detergents are sodium
long chains of sulphonic benzoic acid

In hard water, soap does not form lather as hard water

contains Ca2+and Mg2+ ions. Soap reacts with these ions to
form insoluble calcium and magnesium salts of fatty acids.

Two problems which arise due to the use of detergents

instead of soaps are :

(i) Synthetic detergents are non-biodegradable and hence,

cause water pollution.

(ii) Synthetic detergents also cause skin related problems.

A) What is meant by electric current? Name
and define its SI unit. In a conductor
electrons are flowing from B to A. What is
the direction of conventional current? Give
justification for are flowing from B to A.
- 3 Marks

B) Find the current drawn from the battery by

the network of four resistors Shown in the
figure.

- 2 Marks
● Electric Current: The amount of charge flowing
through a particular area of cross section in unit
time ‘t’ is called electric current

● SI unit of electric current is Ampere.

● If electrons are flowing from B to A in a

conductor, the conventional current is considered
to be flowing from A to B because conventional
current is defined as the direction of positive
charge flow, which is opposite to the movement of
electrons.
How do Mendel’s experiments show that

(a) the traits may be dominant or recessive? - 2

(b) inheritance of the two traits is independent of each other? - 2

c) Write 2 reasons why Mendel selected Pea Plants for his

experiments? - 1
(a) Mendel discovered that only tall pea plants were created in the first
generation when he crossed the pure-bred tall pea plants with the
pure-bred dwarf pea plants (F1). The tall plants and dwarf plants were
produced in the second generation, or (F2), in a ratio of 3:1.

Mendel said that the dwarfness of one of the parent pea plants had not
been lost, but rather had been suppressed or hidden in the first
generation before resurfacing in the second. He described the expressed
characteristic of tallness as the “dominant trait,” and the suppressed
feature of dwarfism as a “recessive trait.” Mendel’s studies on tall and
dwarf pea plants demonstrated that the qualities might be dominant or
recessive in this way.

Thus, the suggested cross could provide an explanation for this:

(b) Mendel discovered that inheritance of two traits is independent of
each other by performing a "dihybrid cross," where he crossed pea
plants differing in two distinct traits, and observed that the offspring
exhibited a variety of combinations of those traits, resulting in a
phenotypic ratio of 9:3:3:1, which indicated that the traits were
inherited separately and not influenced by each other; this is known as
the Law of Independent Assortment.

c) Mendel choose pea plants for his experiments because of the

following reasons:

(i) The flowers of this plant are bisexual.

(ii) They are self-pollinating, and thus, self and cross-pollination can
easily be performed.
Section E would have 3 source based/case
based/passage based/integrated units of
assessment (04 marks each) with sub-parts of
the values of 1/2/3 marks.
Andre Marie Ampere suggested that a magnet
must exert an eq opposite force on a current
carrying conductor, which was experimentally
found to be true. But we know that current is due
to charges in motion. Thus, it is clear that a
charge moving in a magnetic field experience a
force, except when it is moving in a direction
parallel to it. If the direction of motion is
perpendicular to the direction of magnetic field,
the magnitude of force experienced depends on
the charge, velocity (v), strength of magnetic
field (B), and sine of the angle between v and B.
direction of magnetic force is given by Fleming's
left hand rule.
