MATH 202 - DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS
SYLLABUS – SPRING 2020
Faculty: Nihat Gökhan Göğüş Office / Phone: FENS G051; 483 9615
Email: [email protected]
Office Hours: Monday 10:40-11:30, or by appointment.
Lectures. Monday 8.40-10.30, Tuesday 8.40-9.30 at FENS G077 (auditorium).
Course Description. Differential equations are used to model the behavior of systems in the natural
world, such as population growth and decay, spring-mass systems or electrical circuits, and predict
how these systems will behave in the future. This course will present the basics of solving
differential equations in face to face meetings in recitations and office hours.
We will cover the topics First-order ordinary differential equations and solution methods. Direction
fields, qualitative methods. First order, second-order linear and higher order ordinary differential
equations. Mathematical models. Laplace transform. Linear systems.
Prerequisite. Math 102
Goals. The purpose of the course is to give knowledge of how to solve ordinary differential
equations. Upon completing this course, students should understand the general theory of ordinary
differential equations and the basic techniques for solving differential equations involving one
unknown function and one independent variable.
Text Book. (look at SuCourse for more info on textbook!) Fundamentals of Differential Equations
and Boundary Value Problems 6th edition, R. K. Nagle, E. B. Saff, A. D. Snider, Pearson Education
International, 2012
Recitations. The lectures in the recitation classes will be in discussion format. In the recitations only
some selected problems will be discussed. There will not be a review of the course material so make
sure to study the lecture notes before coming to the recitations. Attendance will be followed in
recitations. In the first week of the semester there will be recitation sessions.
You must try the problems at the end of each section in the book.
NA Policy. Students missing 8 or more hours recitations will automatically receive the NA
grade. No excuses will be accepted to miss that much in the course. Note that there are 2 hours of
recitation in one week. So, 8 hours is equivalent to 4 weeks of recitations. Students must attend
the whole recitation in order to be counted as present in the recitation. Health reports will not be
counted, so even if you have a health report, if you’re not in the recitation, you’ll be considered
absent. If you miss 7 hours recitations for whatever reason, then get sick and have to miss the 8th
hour, you’ll still get NA, so do not use up all of your allowed absences. You are required to attend
your registered recitation section; otherwise your attendance grade will be lost. You’re responsible
for keeping track of your attendance grades on SuCourse. If it is entered incorrectly, you must notify
your TA within 1 week to change it. If you have a medical report for an extended period of time
(about a month or so), you are required to contact the course instructor.
Workshop. In your recitation classes you will work individually or sometimes as groups of at
most two students to solve some problems. This is a classroom activity in recitations for which
the book and lecture notes will not be open. It is your responsibility to be present in these
workshops. The solutions during these recitation workshops will be collected. Randomly they will
be graded. There is no make up for workshops. Workshop 2 and Workshop 3 will be online
exams. Make a readable scan or picture (with a scanner or your phone etc) of your answers
and submit as attachment. If your answers are not readable, you may loose points. If you want
to change your first submission, you will be allowed to resubmit until 10.10 a.m for only one
time. Workshops will be 10% of your overall grade. Best two (out of three) of workshop
grades will be counted. See the weekly schedule for the dates.
Exams. There will be totally three exams during the semester: ALL midterms and NO final. There
is no make up for the exams. The best two of the midterm I or II will be counted as one
midterm grade. The other midterm grade comes from the third midterm. It is your responsibility to
be present in the midterms. Midterm 2 and Midterm 3 will be online exams. Make a readable
scan or picture (with a scanner or your phone etc) of your answers and submit as attachment.
If your answers are not readable, you may loose points. If you want to change your first
submission, you will be allowed to resubmit until 10.30 a.m for only one time. Dates of these
exams are below.
Makeup Policy. There will be no makeup. Instead the least grade out of the first two midterms will
not be counted in your total grade evaluation.
Academic Honesty. Dishonesty includes cheating on a test, plagiarism, and helping another student
cheat or plagiarize. Academic dishonesty will result in failure of the course. For complete
information about the University's policy on Academic Honesty, please visit the web site:

Attendance. Class attendance is mandatory. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to make up
the material.
Grading: There will be three midterm exams and no final. Formula to compute your total grade:
Total=0.45*(Max(M1,M2)+M3)+0.10*Max(WS1,WS2,WS3;2)
Midterm I 6 March 2020
Midterm II 27 April 2020 45%
Midterm III 11 May 2020 45%
WS1,2,3 The best two WS grades 10%
The grading scale is 90-100 A, 86-90 A-, 81-85 B+, 76-80 B, 70-75 B-, 65-69 C+,
61-64 C, 56-60 C-, 51-55 D+, 45-50 D, and below 45 F. Plus and minus
grades will be given at my discretion.
Lectures. Monday 8.40-10.30, Tuesday 8.40-9.30 at FENS G077
(auditorium). Office hour: Monday 10.40-11.30 or by appointment at
FENS G051.

If you need extra help:
Always keep in mind that it is very natural and all right if you do not understand a concept or some
thing in the lecture. I and teaching assistants are available to help. Ask questions. Benefit office
hours.
•Regular study habits are sufficient to get a decent grade.
•Attend the classes and recitation hours regularly. Make sure you attend your own
(registered) recitation section.
• Studying out of class for this course should become a routine. Key to success in mathematics
is practice. Solve many problems related to each concept.
• You are responsible from every announcement made in class or in SUCourse. Not
attending the class or not following SUCourse regularly is not an excuse, in case you miss
something.
• I am available to help. Feel free to ask me and your TA a question in and out of class. If you
cannot make it to our office hours, you should e-mail me (or your TA) ahead of time and
make an appointment.
