EDITORIAL

It is a great moment in the history of the department that forty second volume of the
Bharati is in the hands of the scholars. It is possible due to the kind cooperation of the learned
contributors. The journal reveals the academic activities of the department. This volume consists
of the research papers on the various aspects of the Ancient History. The journal gives an
opportunity to the scholars to share the academic views and express the results of their
investigations. The contributors unlock the unknown facts of the ancient history which are the
backbone of the Indian civilization. Besides the departmental faculties, the scholars of the other
institutes also contribute in the present volume. The papers are in Hindi and English.
The present issue consists of thirty eight research papers excluding one book review. V.H.
Sonawane describes the archaeological significance of the Anarta Culture. It is a regional
chalcolithic culture of the north Gujrat. Gujrat is very famous for discoveries of many Harappan
sites. P.P. Joglekar et-aldescribe the animal remains from the Painted Grey ware levels at Burj,
Harayana. Animal remains indicate palaeo environment and food habit of the settlers of the site.
Early Hinyani sects in ancient Malwa (from the earliest times to 2nd century BCE) is discussed
by Susmita Pande. It is one of sects of the Buddhist religion. The depiction of Avalokiteswar
and Tara on the moulded clay tablets in Eastern India and Bangladesh (7th-13th centuries CE) is
explained by Suchandra Ghosh. Ajit Kumar gives an explanation of the Buddhism in Kerla on
the finding of the Buddha images from there.
Classical age Greece is a mile stone in the Greek civilization. It is said that the foundation
of the rational and logical science was laid down in this period. Hippocrates was the father of the
Greek medicine and Galen carried on the scientific medicine which was started by Hippocrates.
Mohd. Naseem describes the work of Galen. R.N. Singh et-aldescribe the archaeological
discoveries noticed during the explorations of rural settlements in the vicinity of Rakhigarhi. It is
very potential, archaeological region. This archaeological explorations have been able to bring
out many startling new discoveries. PushpLata Singh highlights the archaeological remains
recovered from the excavations (2017-18) at Khapura in district Ambedkar Nagar (U.P). This
report establishes for the first time the Pre-NBPW phase reveal from the excavation at Khapura
in this part of Saryupar area. Anil Kumar throws light on the archaeological remains recovered
during a Buddhist Nunnery (Math) at Lali Pahari (Jai nagar), district Lakhisarai, Bihar.
Significance and importance of the inscribed images donated by merchants in Bihar and Bengal
(8th – 12th century) are discussed by Sayantani Pal. A comparative study of the Mauryan and
Gupta monolithic pillars is made by S. Krishnamurthy and Sachin Kumar Tiwary. A.K. Singh
and Ravishankar describe the archaeological discoveries in 2018 at Agiabir, district Mirzapur,
U.P. J. Joglekaret-al discuss the finding of the microliths from the early historical levels at
Nagardham, Nagpur district, Maharashtra. G.K. Lama throws light on the imitation architecture
of Odantpuri on Samye monastery of Tibet. Pyrotechnology of the protohistoric-Early historic
India is narrated by Nidhi Pandey. Shivakant Bajpai describes the importance of caves of the
third group of Aurangabad caves. These are the Buddhist caves carved into basalt rock. The

significance and origin of the vine-scroll motif in the Gandhara art is explained by Vinay
Kumar. Deepak Kumar Rai describes the archaeological museum of the Deptt. of AIHC &
Archaeology, BHU. Rock art sites in Robertganj block, district Sonbhadra, U.P is discussed by
Prabhakar Upadhyay, Swtantra Kumar Singh and Sadeq Mohammad Ali Salesh Rawdhan. Jatak
scenes of Dan Parmita in Buddhist Stupa art is given by Manisha Sinha. Dipak Kumar Shukla
and Pushp Lata Singh throw light on the recent archaeological explorations along the Gomati
river in district Faizabad, U.P.
Maheshwari Prasad describes the environmental consciousness of Kalidas. Super-natural
philosophical streams prevalent among the people in the sixth century BCE is discussed by
Vibha Upadhyay. Archana Sharma analyses the system of writing of dates in the Jain
inscriptions. Inclusive Jain art of Mathura is exposed by Arpita Chatterjee. Prabhakar Upadhyay
and Kamala Ram Bind have given a report on the recently discovered rock art sites and rock
paintings of Naugarh region, district Chandauli, U.P. Ranjit Pratap Singh describes the depiction
of horse on the coinage. Present and Past importance of the Mundeshwari temple is discussed by
Prashant Kashyap. Images of Shiva on the ancient Indian coins are highlighted by Ranjit Pratap
Singh and Raj Kumar Pal. Priyanka Singh and Vikas Kumar Singh discuss the content and
literary analysis of the Nagbandh inscription of Udayaditya of Parmar. The archaeological
explorations of the Kudara river area with especial reference to Kaimur district is discussed by
Vinod Kumar Jaiswal. Dance in the Gupta art and literature is exposed by Sheetal Rana. Rajesh
Kannojiya and Meenakshi Singh make a study of and artistic nature of the coinages of the Indo-
Greek kings. Seema analyses the ancient Varna system. Animal depictions of the coins of the
foreign dynasties is described by Abha Singh and Abhay Kumar. Vijay Pal Singh discussesVrat
and its importance as mentioned in the Agni Puran. Management of the water resources during
the Gutpa dynasty is revealed by Manoj Kumar Singh. Preeti Verma described the agriculture in
the arts. Anil Kumar has given the book review.
Mr. Mukesh Kumar deserves our sincere thanks for composing the manuscript. I am
thankful to him. Dr. Prabhakar Upadhyay has shouldered the responsibility of co-ordination
between the department and the BHU Press. We are very thankful to the BHU Press for printing
