Problem Identification
[Briefly outline the road safety issues and challenges faced by Vulnerable Road Users while crossing the multilane
highways]
Issues with Foot Over Bridges (FOBs):
Challenges in Current  Height of Risers: Steeper stairs due to high risers make FOBs challenging, especially
FOBs Solutions for for older and disabled individuals. The current King Post Truss design is both unstable
Pedestrian Crossings and costly.
 Accessibility for Disabled People and Old People: Ramps are often too steep and
difficult to use.

Challenges in Current
Psychological & Mental Barriers to Using FOBs:
Road User Behaviour 1. Safety Concerns: The metallic truss structure is new to many, causing fear, especially
for FOB utilizations due to vibrations when heavy vehicles pass on highways or rail tracks.
2. Inertia: People resist using FOBs as they take longer and feel unfamiliar.
3. Psychological Factors:
(On the right side are reference o Lack of Interest: Many see road-crossing as an act of bravery, ignoring the
questions to guide the process. life-threatening risks.

FOBs need engaging elements to encourage use—perhaps digital screens or shade structures to

Revolutionizing Foot Over Bridges (FOBs):
Physical & Structural Improvements:
1. Rest Landings: Placing intermediate landings every 12–15 steps to reduce fatigue, especially for elderly and disabled users.
2. Precision in Design: Ensuring riser deviations stay within ±5mm to prevent tripping hazards.
3. Enhanced Accessibility: Installing lifts and escalators to encourage broader usage.
4. Stability & Safety:
o Many fear metal truss structures due to vibrations.
o A concrete base layer can reduce vibrations and provide a sense of security.
o Switching to Pratt Truss offers greater stability at a lower cost.
5. Heat Reduction: Since metal structures absorb heat, adding greenery and flowering plants (like Singapore’s bridges) can
create shade and improve aesthetics.
Making FOBs Cyclist-Friendly:
Inspired by Denmark’s Cycle Highways, we can introduce:
 Dedicated cycling lanes on FOBs.
 Cycle-friendly elevators to allow effortless access.
Beyond Engineering: Making FOBs Engaging & Desirable
 Fun & Interaction: Integrating musical stairs, interactive games, and digital displays can make FOBs enjoyable.
 Awareness Through Advertising: Running safety campaigns with news updates can attract more users.
 Education Initiatives: Including FOB safety awareness in school curricula to instill lifelong road safety habits.
 Sustainable Funding Solution: Leasing FOBs generates revenue, reducing government burden on maintenance and
management.
By merging practical solutions with creativity, FOBs can become safe, inviting, and engaging spaces—encouraging widespread adoption
and saving lives.

 Safety & Stability: Rest landings, Pratt Truss for stability, concrete base to
reduce vibrations.
 Accessibility: Lifts, escalators, cycle-friendly elevators & lanes.
Key Features  User Experience: Musical stairs, games, green cover, and ads for
engagement.
 Education & Awareness: School lessons & public campaigns on FOB safety.

 Public Resistance: Preference for road-crossing, fear of vibrations.

 Cost & Implementation: Funding for lifts, escalators, and cycle lanes;
Challenges
maintenance issues.
 Climate Impact: Metal heats up; needs cooling & weatherproofing.
 Short-Term Impact: Safer crossings, better accessibility, increased FOB
usage.
Impact  Long-Term Impact: Reduced accidents, improved urban mobility, and
enhanced city infrastructure.
