Checklist for Fassmer

-Hydraulic Freefall Release


Unit FFRU 66-

Annual / 5-year thorough examination as per SOLAS Chapter III/


Regulations 3, 20, 36, MSC 402 (96) and MSC 404 (96) by
Fassmer (manufacturer) trained and certified personnel:
All work in this section is only allowed to be carried out by service engineers with a valid
Fassmer-Service-Certificate for release gear!
Unauthorized manipulations to the system void all guarantees and resolve Fassmer of all
responsibility. Faults during work and installation of spare parts can result in heavy injury of the
personnel and/or damage/loss of the lifeboat.

Weekly & monthly inspection has been carried out Last insp. per logbook:

Before attending the boat please secure the boat with
the lifting bridle set to the davit.
-Check hook, hook casing and GRP for damages, e.g.
cracks.
- Ensure that the stop pawl and the release hook have
a contact surface of at least 10mm - 15mm
Check if hook securing bolt with securing elements is
fitted correctly to the door and in proper condition
Check if securing bolt can be pulled out of the hook
casing slightly.
Check condition of hydraulic hose between pump and Manufacturing date:
cylinder
Check security glass of the cylinder emergency release
handwheel for damages and that crowbar is fitted.
Check if handwheel is fully unscrewed. Make sure that
handwheel fits into the safety glass hole.
Check if safety pin of hydraulic release handle is fitted
properly.
Check condition of simulated launch unit if fitted Not applic.
ONLY when the FFLB is either secured by a simulated
launch unit or the hoisting bridle set pulled tight:
Perform a release of the hook by using the hydraulic
release handle
Check hook for “print marks” caused by the pulling
force of the retaining chain. Grind concerned area
smooth, if any. Take care to round surface properly.
Treat surface with zinc spray after grinding.
Check if stop pawl moves back easily in its position
during hook up procedure by turning the pressure
release knob at hand pump handle
Grease the following parts thoroughly with Chesterton
785 Grease:
-Contact surface of release hook and stop pawl
-Contact surface of long link and release hook

Additional checks only during 5-year service: Not applic.

Release hook must be in “released” position:


Remove axle support, fulcrum pin, release hook and
stop pawl.
Clean all removed parts carefully with gas oil and
inspect them for visible damage and corrosion.
Check stroke of hydraulic cylinder for damages and
proper function.
Check all connection bolts of hook casing if pulled
tightly
Grease all moving parts with a thin coating of seawater
resistant grease type Chesterton 785 and
re-assemble the hook.
110% hook overload release function test with the full Test weight:
complement of persons and equipment. Test
recommended to be done with Fassmer hydraulic
overload test unit.
NOTE: The five-yearly dynamic overload winch brake
test should be executed with a PROOF LOAD and NOT
with the boat!
Remove safety glass of the emergency release
handwheel. Check if handwheel turns easily and check
if emergeny release unit works properly by performing
110% hook overload release test with emergency
release handwheel. Install safety glass properly right
after check.

5-year mandatory spare parts exchange section, only applicable for 5-year services:
