METHODOLOGY FOR TUFING OF SLOPES, SHOULDERS AND

MEDIAN OF EMBANKMENT

Scope of Work : Furnishing & Laying of live sods as to form grass on


embankment slops, verges and median as per the Technical
Specifications Clause 307.

Materials : The materials proposed to be used are Local doob grass,


Lemon or Lepia grass, Local sarpat grass, Long leaved carpet grass
and /or as approved by the Engineer. All the materials used shall be
devoid of any undesirable materials especially weeds etc.

Laying Process :
1. The area to be turfed shall have been previously constructed to
the required slope / cross-section or else it shall be prepared to
2: 1 slope and checked by template for continuity & exactness of
slope.
2. The soil on the area to be turfed shall be loosed upto a depth
of 25 mm and made free of all undesirable foreign material.
3. Where required fertilizer / manure shall be spread at a uniform
rate by discing or any other method as approved by the
Engineer.
4. The prepared bed shall be moistened to the loosened depth,
if not already sufficiently moist.
5. The sods shall be cut in strips of not less than 250mm x 300mm
in size.
6. The sods of the specified grass shall be placed thereon, within
24 Hrs. of cutting.
7. Every strip shall be tamped lightly with suitable wooden or
metal tempers so as to eliminate air pockets and to press it into
the underlaying soil.
8. On side slopes steeper than 2 (H) to 1 (V), the laying of sods
shall be started from bottom upwards.
9. After the sods have been laid in position, the surface shall be
cleaned of loose sod, excess soil and other foreign materials.
10. Top dressing shall be done by scattering a thin layer of top soil
and sprinkling the surface with water.
11. Proper watering and maintenance of the surface shall be
done to ensure proper and uniform growth of sods for at least
four weeks.

Environmental & Safety precautions to be taken:


1. Warning Signs at suitable locations shall be erected to ensure
that the turfed surface is not accidentally run over by motor
vehicles.
2. Barriers shall be erected to protect the turfed surface from
stray cattle and any undesirable human intervention.
3. Watering of the surface shall be so done as to avoid erosion of
the soil.
4. It shall be ensured that the sodded areas are not damaged by
the wheels of water trucks while watering.
5. It shall be ensured that there occurs no harm to the sodded
surface by any of the construction activities going on nearby.
