City versus country?

2/4
Most of my friends now live out in the country. They hate 36 in the city because it's very
noisy and dirty, they have to use the subway or buses to travel anywhere, and it's always very 37
. I know these things are true, but I like the city because there are more things to do there than in the
country. I think cities 38 a better place to live because I love history; there are a lot of
monuments to see and cultural activities to do. Every day, you can visit galleries and museums, or you
can go to the opera, the ballet, or the theater in the evening. Also, there are a lot of big sports events in
the city, and they sometimes use the stadiums for some of the 39 pop concerts. There's more
choice about where you can live, too - from a small house with a yard to an apartment at the top of a
skyscraper.
Most cities have one or two big colleges and it's much easier to 40 a job in a city. People are
often angry about the transportation, but I like traveling to work because I can think or read on the bus
or subway, or you can bike to work and get in shape. Then there are a lot of things you can do with
friends - it's easy to meet 41 coffee or dinner. There are a lot of restaurants with different types
of food, for example Italian and Indian, and you can get delicious 42 like yogurt drinks or ice
cream. The sports facilities are much better in a city, too. There are gyms and places to play volleyball
and tennis. I know there 43 golf courses in the country, but sometimes you have to 44
a lot of money to join a golf club.
For me, one of the best things about living in a city is that you can meet people from all over the
world. I love talking to people 45 other countries. I don't think I could ever live in the country!

Many universities around the world are proud to have long histories and strong traditions. However, very
few universities can claim to be among the oldest in the world.
Nalanda University, in Bihar, India, was established around 600 BC. It was most likely the world's first
university. In the past, scholars came from Europe, China, and all over India to learn about science,
medicine, the Buddhist religion, and other subjects. The university is in ruins now, but at one time it
was an impressive school with temples, classrooms, libraries, and dormitories.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the University of AI-Karaouine in Fes, Morocco, is the
oldest surviving university in the world. It was probably founded in 859 and became a famous place to
study natural sciences. The first university in Europe is definitely the University of Bologna, in Italy. It
was one of the few universities in Europe that were not influenced by religion. Professors were
forbidden from teaching outside the university, and so students came from all over Europe to study
with its famous teachers.

Many of you know that I really love my grandmother’s cooking. My grandmother,
Silvia, is 91 and she lives in a small village near Turin, in Italy. It’s a really beautiful
place. I go there three times a year, and I love spending time with my grandmother in
her kitchen. It’s pretty small, but it has everything you need.
My grandmother’s area of Italy is the home of the Slow Food organization. Slow
Food believe that local food and traditional cooking are very important. Their ideas
are popular – they now have a college in the Italian town of Pollenzo, and offices in
many different countries, including Germany, France, and Japan.
Their ideas are important to my grandmother, too. She makes a lot of pasta dishes, but
today, I’m sharing her recipe for a soup called ribollita. At this time of year, I love
eating lots of green vegetables. That’s why this is one of my favorite winter dishes. It
takes a long time to make – it’s a good recipe for a cold day when you don’t want to

F. READING COMPREHENSION

My village was never a big village, nor was it particularly successful or well-known. It
was a place where simple people worked on their land, tending citrus groves and running
poultry farms. The most exotic plantation grew avocados, and a palm tree nursery was
something of an attraction.
The village was established by a group of Greek immigrants in 1937 in what was then
known as British-controlled Palestine. When we first moved here, one could still hear some
Greek in the street, the local store sold oringinal Greek delicacies and from time to time we
were invited to sit on a neighbor’s porch and share some ouzo at the end of a working day.
In the last few years, my village has changed dramatically. Very few people work in
agriculture now; they can no longer support their families growing oranges and chickens. As
a result, they must find their income outside the village and rent out their land or sell their
little family farms altogether. Some of the land is still used for agriculture, but no longer for
the family farms. Now it is the agriculture of luxuries.

Dear Angela,
I was horrified when I found out that my 12-year-old daughter had been arrested for stealing
some make-up from a high street chemist's. This happened because she had been dared by some
