The music of Malaysia may be categorized into two types:

𝟏.) 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐤 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲

emerged during the pre-colonial period and still exists in the form of vocal, dance,and theatrical
music.

𝟐.) 𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 developed during the post-Portuguese period (16th
century). It contains elements from both local music and foreign elements of Arabian,

Persian, Indian, Chinese, andWestern musical and theatrical sources.

𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐲𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐚:

𝟏.) 𝐀𝐠𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐠- This is a gong-based musical ensemble commonly used in funerals and
weddings in East Malaysia.

𝟐.) 𝐊𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐤- This is a musical ensemble from the Malay Peninsula that consists of xylophones
played swiftly and rhythmically in traditional Malay

functions

𝟑.) 𝐃𝐈𝐊𝐈𝐑 𝐁𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐓- a type of musical form that is important to Malaysia's national culture. It is
performed by singing in groups and often in a competitive manner usually with percussion
instrumental accompaniment or sometimes without instruments at all.

𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐂 𝐎𝐅 𝐂𝐀𝐌𝐁𝐎𝐃𝐈𝐀:

•Cambodian music gained a world wide reputation in the 1960’s

𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐊𝐎𝐑 𝐖𝐀𝐓- The largest Religious monument in the world. Located in the HEART OF
CAMBODIA

𝐊𝐇𝐌𝐄𝐑 𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐃𝐎𝐌- It was the center. dominated the Southeast Asian Region for 600 years.

𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐏𝐄𝐀𝐓- A Cambodian musical ensemble or an orchestra that usually accompanies

ceremonial music of the Royal courts and temples.


𝟒 𝐭𝐲𝐩𝐞𝐬:

- 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐭 𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜e -𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐤 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐬

- 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐰 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐬. -𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐲

•𝐒𝐤𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐦- is a percussion instrument with two barrel-like drums with a pair of wooden
drumsticks.

•𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐫- a double-headed barrel drum indigenous to Cambodia.

𝐎𝐍𝐄𝐀𝐓:

-Traditional Cambodian percussion instrument

-With numerous gongs attached together onto a circular rock

-used in the Khmer classical music of Cambodia.

-It has 21 thick bamboo or hard wood bars that are suspended from the strings

𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐂 𝐎𝐅 𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐎𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐈𝐀

𝐀𝐧𝐤𝐨𝐫 𝐖𝐚𝐭- The largest Buddhist monument in the world.

𝐕𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐚

•𝐒𝐈 𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐎𝐊𝐀𝐀𝐍:

- Is a nickname which is usually used for North Sulawesi children from the North Sulawesi
Province.

- It is a favorite folk song in North Saluwesi.

- it is usually sung by the community at special events

- It tells the story of a loving Mother and her child named Si Patokaan who wants to migrate to
the big city to make a living and be successful in life.
•𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐏𝐄𝐀𝐓 𝐆𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐋𝐀𝐍

- It is the most popular form of music in Indonesia which contains a variety of instruments.

•Gamelan orchestras are used to accompany dances, songs and Wayang Kulit(Indonesia's

traditional form of shadow puppet play.

-Polyphonic stratification(music layers of simple, independent melodic lines or

- interlocking rhythm patterns. interlocking is a common technique used in gong ensembles.

𝐓𝐘𝐏𝐄𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐆𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐋𝐀𝐍:

* Used for court music

* Percussion dominated

* Style of playing gives a solemn character to the music

* Used for sacred music

* Consists of metallophones and mostly gongs

* Has sudden changes of tempo and dynamics

* Very bright and brilliant sounds

* Use of the rattling sounds of cymbals

𝐏𝐄𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐇𝐄𝐍-a female soloist singer who sings with gamelan

𝐆𝐄𝐑𝐎𝐍𝐆- the unison male chorus that sings with ther gamelan
