Atoms, Molecules, and Ions

Chemical Formulas of Common

Chemical Substances

Activity 1. Household Chemicals!

What to do: Copy and fill in the table
with correct information.
For common names: Salt, Vinegar, Alcohol
For chemical names: Sodium chloride, Acetic acid, Ethanol
For Formulas : NaCl, CH₃COOH, C2H5OH
PREDICTING IONIC CHARGES
ON MONATOMIC IONS
IONS

• When atoms lose or gain electrons, they become IONS.

– Cations are positive and are formed by elements on
the left side of the periodic chart.
– Anions are negative and are formed by elements on
the right side of the periodic chart.
IONIC BONDS
Ionic compounds (such as NaCl) are generally
formed between metals and nonmetals.
Discussing new concept 1A
Naming Binary Compound containing a
metal and a nonmetal
To name ionic compounds given the formula,
we follow these steps:
1. Separate the formula of the cation from that
of the anion. Determine the charge of each
ion.
2. First write the name of the cation , followed
by the name of the anion with a space in
between.
Example 1
State the name of NaCl

cation anion
Ions: Na+ Cl-
Name of ions: sodium chloride

Name of the compound:

sodium chloride
Example 2
State the name of K2Cr2O7

cation anion
Ions: K+ Cr2O7 2-
Name of ions: potassium dichromate

Name of the compound:

potassium dichromate
Example 3
State the name of FeO

cation anion
Ions: Fe2+ O2-
Name of ions: iron (II) oxide

Name of the compound:

systematic name: iron (II) oxide

common name: ferrous oxide
Activity 3. Name me metal and nonmetal!
What to do: Give the name of the
following formula.
Discussing new concept 1B
Naming Binary Compound containing two
nonmetals but not hydrogen
1. They are named using prefixes to state how
many atoms of an element are in one
compound molecule.
2. The name of the second element modified
to the root of its name followed by the
ending ide.
Prefixes used in naming binary
compounds of two nonmetals
Example 1
State the name of CO

nonmetal nonmetal
C O
Name of the compound:

carbon monoxide
Example 2
State the name of SO₂

nonmetal nonmetal
S O₂
Name of the compound:

sulfur dioxide
Activity 4. Name me nonmetal and
nonmetal!
What to do: Give the name of the
following compounds.
Discussing new concept 1C
Naming Acids
1. anions usually have the ending "-ide“.
Example 1
State the name of HCl
Anion: chloride (Cl-)
Discussing new concept 1C
Naming Acids
2. anions usually have the ending "-ate“.
Example 2
State the name of H2CO3
Anion: carbonate (CO32-)
Discussing new concept 1C
Naming Acids
3. anions usually have the ending "-ite“.
Example 3
State the name of HNO2
Anion: nitrite (NO2-)
Activity 5. Name me in acid!
What to do: Give the name of the
following compounds.
Discussing new concept 2A
Writing the chemical formula of Binary Ionic
Compounds
1. Write the formula of the cation first,
followed by the formula of the anion.
2. The formula should indicate the
smallest number of cation and anion
units combined to give an overall
charge of zero.
Example 1
Write the formula of Aluminum oxide
cation anion
Ions: Al3+ O2-
Crisscross method of writing chemical
formula of ionic compound

Formula of the compound: Al2O3

Example 2
Write the formula of Calcium Oxide
cation anion
Ions: Ca2+ O2-
Crisscross method of writing chemical
formula of ionic compound

Formula of the compound: CaO

Discussing new concept 2B
Writing chemical formula of Binary
compounds containing two nonmetals but
not hydrogen
In writing the chemical formula given
the name of two nonmetals, look at the
prefixes that imply the number of atoms
of an element in a compound.
Writing chemical formula of Binary
compounds containing two nonmetals but
not hydrogen
Common compounds that can be
found at home and its uses
1. Water
Chemical formula: H₂O
Uses: Almost no living thing can survive without
water. Water is everywhere on our planet. It
is the reason we have an organic life on
earth.
2. Table Salt
Chemical formula: NaCl
Uses: Basic ingredient that can be used in so many
smart ways other than seasoning your food
and is also considered one of the most
effective preservatives.
Common compounds that can be
found at home and its uses
3. Sucrose (Sugar)
Chemical formula: C₁₂H₂₂O₁₁
Uses: Sucrose is the common sugar which again
forms the major ingredient in baking and
cooking.
4. Baking Powder
Chemical formula: NaHCO₃ (Sodium bicarbonate)
Uses: It is use in baking cakes and desserts. It is
also use in neutralizing stomach acidity.
Common compounds that can be
found at home and its uses
7. Mouthwash
Chemical formula: H₂O₂ (Hydrogen peroxide)
Uses: Mouthwash is an antiseptic solution used to
reduce the antibacterial load in our oral cavity.
8. Vinegar
Chemical formula: CH₃COOH (Acetic Acid)
Uses: It is widely used as a preservative and for
seasoning food and salad. It is also use for
cleaning purposes.
EVALUATION
A. Give the name of the following formula.
