PROJECT: DEHUE COFFEE
The DeHue structure, colloquially pronounced as "comeback Hue" in the local dialect, is a
wooden house designed with traditional Hue architecture. Originally constructed by its
owner, the abandoned house has been transformed into a contemporary coffee shop while
retaining its traditional characteristics.
Preservation efforts have maintained the original column, beam, and roof systems of the
house. Notable modifications include the placement of a bar in the right corner, the
addition of an open roof to invite natural light, and the application of stone cladding to the
border columns, creating a contrast with the old traditional house. Furthermore, the roof
extension at the front and back serves to provide protection from rain and sun, particularly
due to its proximity to the sea. Glass coverings have been utilized to connect the interior
with the surrounding garden while preventing cold air from entering the house. The garden
has been enriched with a variety of fruit trees, contributing to the greening of the premises
over time. Additionally, the interior design incorporates reclaimed wood from different
houses in Hue, aligning with the project's commitment to environmentally friendly
practices.
In the front yard, the temperature has been moderated through the addition of a small pond
next to a large tree, while the lowered fence improves visibility of the structure from the
outside.
Ultimately, DeHue represents our endeavor to introduce the Southwest region to a
harmonious blend of traditional house architecture, integrating both historical and
contemporary elements. This project challenges the notion that traditional houses in Hue
must be solely ancient and austere, offering a modern interpretation of this iconic
architectural style. DeHue is read in the local dialect in the West as "de Hue"
DeHue is a wooden house with Hue traditional architecture, built by the owner in the past.
Inspired by that, we turned the abandoned house into a coffee shop with a modern style
based on traditional features.
To preserve the house, all the column, beam, and roof systems are kept. The bar is
arranged in the right corner of the house, the roof is opened to bring more natural light into
the house, and the two rows of border columns are covered with stone to increase the
difference from the old traditional house. The roof is extended to the front and back to
protect against rain and sun on the land near the sea. The house's cover is covered with
glass to be close to the garden outside and prevent cold air inside the house. The garden is
enhanced with a system of fruit trees to green the house over time. In the interior, we used
old wood from different houses in Hue, which is also our orientation towards a green
environment in the design.
In the front yard, we reduced the temperature with a small pond next to a large tree, the
fence was also lowered to a lower level than the current state so that the outside could see
the construction more clearly.
Finally, DeHue is a project that we want to bring to the Southwest region a view of gentle
traditional house architecture, interspersed with old and new things that are modern, not
that traditional houses in Hue always have to be ancient and sad.
