Case Based Questions :

37. Distance is the length of the actual path covered by an object, irrespective of its direction of
motion. Displacement is the shortest distance between the initial and final positions of an object
in a given direction.
Distance is a scalar quantity. Displacement is a vector quantity. Distance covered can never be
negative. It is always positive or zero. Displacement may be positive, negative or zero.

(ii) Define displacement. (1)
(iii) What is the difference between distance and displacement. (2)
OR
Under what condition distance and magnitude of displacement is equal ?
38. Plant cells, in addition to the plasma membrane, have another rigid outer covering called the
cell wall. The cell wall lies outside the plasma membrane. The plant cell wall is mainly

composed of cellulose. Cellulose is a complex substance and provides structural strength to

plants. When a living plant cell loses water through osmosis there is shrinkage or contraction of
the contents of the cell away from the cell wall. This phenomenon is known as plasmolysis.
(i) What is the main constituent of cell wall? (1)

39. Three common states of matter are : solids liquids and gases. One state of matter can be
converted into other by applying temperature or pressure or both. Whenever a solid is heated,
it first gets converted into liquid and finally into the gaseous state. Similarly, when a liquid is
heated, it gets converted into the gaseous state. Conversely, gases can be converted into liquids
by cooling under pressure. At the same time, there are some other substance which on heating
directly get converted into the gaseous state without passing through the intermediate liquid
state.
(i) Define melting point. (1)
(ii) Inter conversion of matter is a constant temperature process. Illustrate this statement.(1)
(iii) What is sublimation ? Give example. (2)
OR
Define boiling point. Discuss briefly the effect of pressure on the boiling point of a liquid.
