Academic writing is also simply referred to as ‘scholarly composition’, and this is the preferred
communication style in colleges and even published works. It adheres to certain management and
design principles that are meant to express the intricate message, arguments, and research that have
been formulated with the utmost simplicity. Compared to any other writing, however, academic writing
does not entertain subjectivity, bias and honed in on walls of evidences and clarity.
1. Formal Tone: Non-formal expression and everyday language is not welcomed in academic writing. It is
more concerned with projecting respect and professionalism in the voice, which is only reasonable in
the audience presented.
2. Structure: Academic essays and papers often have a strict order which can consist of some of or all
those parts:
Introduction: Presents the subject, setting and gives a thesis statement or research questions.
Conclusion: Provides an overview of the results, restates the thesis and offers some recommendations
or future studies.
3. Objective Language: Personal opinions are usually shunned, and claims made are backed up with
evidence from known sources. The use of the first person is limited in most cases.

should write complete and grammatically correct sentences. There will be no room for ambiguity. It is
permitted to use a jargon of any level, provided that its meaning will be made clear to all the audience.

Chicago, etc. This allows proper acknowledgement of sources, and hence promotes honesty in academic
work.
Forms of Academic Writing:
1. Essays: Prose styled pieces are also called as analytical or argumentative essays, which have a clear
and precise objective in answering a certain question or a prompt.
2. Research Papers: Research works of high academic standard which either present original research or
a survey of literature conducted in the field.
3. Reports: Prepare this written document which focuses on facts, typical in the sphere of the natural
sciences, where they present results of investigations or observations.
5. Reviews: These are evaluative papers in which the writer “reviews” particular materials such as books,
articles and any other literature related to a subject.
The reason is clear, academic writing is as important as it allows individuals to present their discoveries,
join in the scholarly discourse, and extend the boundaries of knowledge to other fields. Academic
writing is thus stimulating of critical thought, idea generation and evaluation of facts.
One cannot do without strong academic writing since it is vital to higher education and any profession
which involves research, analysis and communication.
