Note: Answer any five full questions. Write diagrams, equations or examples wherever
necessary.

1. A. What is chemical shift? Explain the factors affecting chemical shift.


B. Discuss the working principle of the following;
i) Quadrupole MS ii) Time-of-flight MS
C. What are the advantages of Fourier transform NMR measurement over continuous
wave NMR measurement? What are its disadvantages?

2. A. Predict the 13C NMR chemical shift values for the following molecules;
(i) n-Pentane
(ii) 3-Pentamine (correction for internal NH2 substitution: α carbon = +24, β carbon =
+10, γ carbon = − 5)
(iii) Nitrobenzene (correction for substituent NO2: C1 = + 19.6, C2 = − 5.3, C3 = +
0.9, C4 = + 6.0)
(iv) 1-Fluoro-2-Nitrobenzene (correction for substituent NO2: C1 = + 19.6, C2 =
−5.3, C3 = + 0.9, C4 = + 6.0) (correction for substituent F: C1 = + 35.1, C2 =
−14.3, C3 = + 0.9, C4 = − 4.5)
B. Explain the instrumentation and working of ESR spectrometer.
C. The spin of 59Co is 7/2. Assuming an axial field gradient, obtain expressions for
frequencies of the NQR transitions.

3. A. i) Discuss the application of mass spectrometry in trace gas analysis.


ii) What is the significance of Karplus’s equations?
B. Explain the following alternatives to electron-impact ionization in mass spectrometry;
i) Electrospray ionization ii) Chemical ionization
C. The mass spectrum of 2-methylhexane is given below. What is the m/z value of the M+
peak and of the base peak? Give possible structures of the fragments giving rise to the
large peaks at m/z = 85, 57 and 43.
