Introduction
OBJECTIVES
The Cultural Foundation’s objectives are primarily focused on preserving
and promoting the island’s cultural and natural heritage in both Cyprus and
abroad. Further, the Foundation aspires to bring the Cypriot public closer to
the history, art and culture of the broader Hellenic area and of other nations.

lications that span all the aforementioned fields; also, by hosting events, ed-
ucational programs and lectures in order to preserve and enrich the collec-
tions the Bank of Cyprus bequeathed to the Cultural Foundation. Moreover,
the Foundation frequently finds practical ways to endorse the arts and cul-
ture on the whole.
Today, the Cultural Foundation curates two museums and six collections of
rare value. With a firm belief that it is our duty to make this wealth available
to the public, we have embarked on an ambitious program of scientific pub-
lications devoted to the whole range of the Foundation Collections.

Cypriot Cartography
AUTHOR : A. Hadjipaschalis
In the 1960s the Bank brought together a collection of old maps of Cyprus, which was
bequeathed to the Cultural Foundation in 1984 and subsequently grew into the largest
collection of Cyprus’ printed maps in the world. One of the Foundation’s very first publi-
cations, this small folio provides a concise introduction to Cypriot cartography.

This bilingual edition was released at the time of the first exhibition of the Foundation’s
collection of maps entitled “Cypriot cartography from Claudius Ptolemaeus to Kitchener”,
organised in Athens to coincide with the Seventh International Symposium of Cartogra-
phy (6 – 8 October 1989). The first part of the book presents 66 annotated cartographic
evidences from the Foundation’s collection (1984 – 1989): maps, atlases and travel books
in chronological order. The second part catalogues 64 maps of the Mikis and Agnes
Michaelides Collection, donated to the Foundation in 1988. This collection includes maps
of Cyprus, maps from various editions of Claudius Ptolemy’s Geographia, Mediterranean
sea charts and general maps of the Eastern Mediterranean featuring Cyprus.

The Antonakis and Laura Georgiades Cartographic Collection, the second largest private
collection of maps to be donated to the Cultural Foundation (1993) includes 82 items: 72
printed maps (16th–19th c.) mainly of Cyprus, four cartouches of maps from 19th and
20th century newspapers, two original manuscript maps drawn by Antonakis Georgiades
in 1939 and a small pebble in the shape of Cyprus. This provisional catalogue which ac-
companied the extraordinary exhibition of the collection in November 1993 includes
carto-bibliographical entries and a short commentary on the history of each map.

A product of Susan Gole’s exhaustive research, awarded by the Cultural Foundation’s re-
search program, the book treads until recently uncharted territory in international bibli-
ography: the utterly ignored cartographic material attached to many of the British Parlia-
mentary Papers. Out of a total of two to three thousand maps included in approximately
8000 volumes of all papers submitted to the British House of Commons (bills, memos,
diplomatic and commercial reports etc) the author brings to light, classifies and presents
hitherto unknown cartographic material consisting of 330 printed maps and topographic
plans of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea regions between 1801–1921, which saw
the British Empire at its height.

of Navigation at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich until 1987, on the evolution
of the sea chart from its origins to nowadays. In a long journey that began from the early
thirteenth-century sea charts on vellum to reach the nineteenth-century sophisticated
British hydrographical surveys, chart-making underwent a variety of phases ranging from
the Mediterranean portolans to the great contribution of the French eighteenth-century
school of organised hydrography.

Following the rich production of maps of Cyprus in the sixteenth century, known as the
“golden age” of Cypriot cartography, the island had remained unmapped during the three
hundred years of Ottoman occupation until 1878 when the unexpected British takeover
prompted the need for a modern triangulated survey. This “remarkable feat” was accom-
plished by the young Lieutenant Kitchener who was later to rise to become the famous
Rt Hon. Earl Kitchener of Khartoum. In the Andreas Hadjipaschalis Memorial Lecture de-
livered in Nicosia on 17 November 1999, Rodney Shirley, author of the standard reference
book The Mapping of the World, traces the various phases of the five-year-long survey,
gives detailed background information, especially about Kitchener’s relations with the
British authorities, and presents fresh documents from the Public Archives of Cyprus.

Maps of Cyprus
From the Collections of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation
EDITED BY : L. Navari
This publication accompanied the exhibition entitled “The Cyprus of the European Car-
tographers, 16th–20th Century”, held in Nicosia to coincide with the 22nd International
Symposium of the International Map Collectors’ Society (IMCoS) (14–16 October 2003),
which was organised by the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation. It includes 307 carto-
graphic items, almost the entire Map Collection of the Foundation. Maps are arranged in
chronological order, according to the date each map first appeared in print, followed by
one or more descriptions of a map or maps based on the specific print. The introduction
on “The History of the Cartography of Cyprus” is the work of the late Andreas Hadji-
paschalis and first appeared in Maps and Atlases (Nicosia 1989).

A supplement to the exhibition entitled “Cyprus at the Azimuths of the Wind” held in Thes-
saloniki in June 2003 within the context of events to mark the European Union Summit
Conference. It is a deluxe publication that includes maps of Cyprus from the 14th to the
19th century by European cartographers of the time, from Ptolemy’s Geography to repre-
sentatives of all the great European schools of cartography — Italian, Dutch, British, Ger-
man, French, Spanish, etc. The maps come from the Collection of the Bank of Cyprus Cul-
tural Foundation and are complemented with illustrations taken from important
publications on cartography. The maps are analysed with the use of pioneering tech-
niques developed in recent years at the National Map Library on the basis of the orienta-
tion of the historical depictions of Cyprus compared with today’s model, that is, of its az-
imuthal deviations from today’s direction of north.

Cyprus 1542
The Great Map of the Island by Leonida Attar
The 7th lecture in the series “Cyprus Cartography”, entitled “Cyprus 1542: The great map
of the island by Leonida Attar” was delivered in October 2003. The large scale map of
Cyprus (139×64 cm), coloured with the use of the aquarelle technique was drawn in 1542
by Cypriot Leonida Attar. Attar was appointed by the Venetian authorities as a specialist
in irrigation works and military fortifications, which he undertook together with Michelle
and Girolamo Sanmicheli in both Venice and Cyprus. At the same time, he acquired tech-
nical knowledge and experience in drawing maps. The map remained hidden in the
archives of Venice from the 16th century onwards, most likely for strategic and military
reasons, and was practically unknown until a few years ago. The discovery and study of
the map by the authors has demonstrated its importance as a primary source for cartog-
raphy and the history of Cyprus.

Maps of Cyprus
From the Sixteenth to the Eighteenth Century. Eleven Facsimilies from the Cartographic
Collection of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation
TEXTS BY : Ch. Hadjichristodoulou, I. Hadjicosti
In celebration of its twenty-fifth anniversary, the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation pub-
lished a numbered collectors’ folder (1– 500), entitled Maps of Cyprus. From the 16th to the
18th century. Eleven facsimiles from the cartographic collection of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural
Foundation. The maps have been reproduced from the originals of the Foundation’s car-
tographic collection dating from the 16th to the 18th century. These rare, notable maps
of Cyprus were printed and circulated throughout Europe; they contain important infor-
mation on both mapping itself and the island’s centuries-long tumultuous history. Apart
from maps of Cyprus, the folder includes a significant group of maps of the Mediterranean
and the Near East, featuring Cyprus. The latter display illustrations of important historical
events such as the journey of Aeneas from Troy to Rome linked to that of Odysseus from
Troy to Ithaca, the march of Alexander the Great to Asia and the itinerary of the Apostle
Paul’s missionary journeys.

Further, applying widely used methods and techniques of digital cartography, an analysis
is achieved of morphic templates, namely of Cyprus’ contour. Various historical maps from

AUTHOR : A. Pitsillides
In the 1960s, the Bank of Cyprus started building a collection of ancient coins through
purchases from European Houses, which it bequeathed to the Cultural Foundation in
1984. The initial collection comprised a bronze coin of the Roman period bearing the in-
scription KOINON KYPRION [confederation of Cypriot cities] which, as a symbol of the old-
est Pan-Cypriot union, became the official emblem of the Bank of Cyprus. The illustrated
folio Cyprus: 2500 Years of Coinage traces the development of Cypriot coinage through
the centuries.

This illustrated catalogue was prepared for the homonymous exhibition held in Athens
in 1991 at the N.P. Goulandris Foundation Museum of Cycladic and Ancient Greek Art. The
exhibition was repeated three years later at the Cabinet des Médailles of the National Li-
brary of France. The aim of both the exhibition and its catalogue was to present a survey
of 2200 years of Cypriot history through its coins. 222 coins of Cypriot city-kingdoms (6th
– 4th century BC) from the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Frankish and Venetian periods
were in display. The exhibition closed with the coins minted in 1571 by the Venetian gov-
ernor of Famagusta, while under Ottoman siege, Marc Antonio Bragadino.

Metcalf examines how coinage can provide evidence for the study of the changing pros-
perity of Medieval Cyprus. Following an overview of his subject, the author focuses on
two examples: the first concerns the effects on monetary economy caused by the loss of
Famagusta to the Genoese in 1371. The second explores the effect of the Arab raids on
the coinage of Cyprus during the second half of the seventh century. Both examples shed
light on the methods required for establishing the relation between Coinage and History.
The first half of the publication makes reference to James R. Stewart and the Stavrokonnos
hoard. The presentation is completed by two annexes.

The lecture entitled “Ancient Olympic Games and Coinage” was given in 2004 on the oc-
casion of the return of the Olympic Games to Greece. Now published, it provides an in-
teresting record of this sacred institution as well as of the ancient site of Olympia. In par-
allel with the testimony provided by excavations, literary sources and inscriptions, the
coins of Elis, ranked among the most beautiful of the ancient world, provide valuable in-
formation on this supreme institution. The coinage of Elis, the city that used to host the
Olympic Games, in tandem with the coins of other minting authorities featuring illustra-
tions of the Games, provide a wider understanding of the religious, economic, political
and artistic dimensions of the ancient Olympic Games.

[Cyprus 1191 –1489. The Crusades and Frankish Rule: Exhibition Catalogue of
Rare Editions]
The exhibition of rare editions from the Cultural Foundation Collections (16th–20th cen-
tury) complemented the 1993 lecture of Peter W. Edbury “The Lusignan Kingdom of
Cyprus and its Muslim Neighbours” giving an illustrated account of the historical relation
between the Crusades and the establishment of the Lusignan’s Frankish kingdom in
Cyprus. The catalogue includes detailed bibliographical entries on the exhibition’s twen-
ty-seven old editions together with a descriptive note about the history and contents of
each book.
Published to coincide with the opening of the Museum of the George and Nefeli Giabra
Pierides Collection (donation by Clio and Solon Triantafyllides), the collection covers a
wide range of Cypriot history and archaeology from the Early Bronze Age (2500 BC) to
the end of the Medieval period (16th century). This chronological sequence has dictated
the structure and design of the publication. It is worth noting that this is the first time the
Collection is published in its entirety. The aim of the scientific catalogue is to document
the immense historical and archaeological value of the Collection, present it to the wider
public and submit it to the scholars for study.

This edition presents manuscript Venetian letters from the Collection of Manuscripts and
Old Editions of the Foundation as well as letters from other Cypriot collectors. In total,
twenty important letters are presented, dating from 1354 to 1512. More specifically, four-
teen of the letters come from the Foundation Collections, three from the private collection
of Paul and Nina Pastides, two from another private collection and one from the collection
of the Leventis Municipal Museum in Nicosia. The letters were written by Venetian mer-
chants and contain information on commercial activities and trading networks of the
eastern Mediterranean, especially Cyprus. Throughout the course of the 15th century, the
Venetians controlled the movement of goods between the Eastern Mediterranean and
Western Europe and enjoyed a monopoly over the movement of goods produced in Ve-
netian colonies.
This folder includes facsimiles of six original engravings by Louis-François Cassas from the
Foundation Collections. The engravings depict views of Cypriot towns: Kerynia, Larnaca,
Famagusta, Bellapais and St. Hilarion. Louis-François Cassas was a designer, engraver,
sculptor and archaeologist, who visited Cyprus twice, in February and April of 1785. Today,
the few designs of Cassas make up the first successful attempt at a figurative representa-
tion of these Cypriot monuments that have been largely celebrated by artists and writers
alike. In 1799, the edition Voyage pittoresque de la Syrie, de la Phénicie, de la Palestine et
dans la Basse Egypte came out in Paris together with the six sheets of Cassas featuring
views of Cyprus. This edition is perhaps the most important illustrated book on 18th cen-

EDITED BY : G. Papageorgiou
A collected edition of the first ten annual lectures on the history and archaeology of
Cyprus, and an extraordinary lecture, all delivered at the Cultural Foundation between
1985 and1994. The collection of eleven texts in a single volume was deemed necessary
for two reasons. On the one hand, most of the separate editions have been sold out, and
on the other hand the present edition constitutes the scientific record of an established
institution which marked the Cultural Foundation’s first decade. This volume brings to-
gether an important collection of Cyprological essays, ranging from prehistoric times to

In a lecture delivered in March 1998, Glen Warren Bowersock, professor of Ancient History
at the Princeton Institute of Advanced Study, dwells on the role of Cyprus during late an-
tiquity which to a large extent coincides with the first Christian and early Byzantine years.
Bowersock speaks of Cyprus’ relations with Alexandria, Antioch and Constantinople, the
work of Epiphanios of Constantia and Leontios of Neapolis as well as the 7th century Arab
raids and provides evidence for Cyprus’ decisive influence on the continental area of its
Mediterannean surroundings.

AUTHOR : J. Boardman
In a lecture delivered in November 2000, Sir John Boardman, professor of Classical Ar-
chaeology at Oxford University and the Royal Academy of Arts, deals with the history of
Cyprus in the period between the twelfth and seventh century BC, a period characterised
by foreign influences and shifting populations. While these facts help in determining the
culture of the island, the lecture focuses on the importance of the local character and the
activities of the indigenous Cypriot population. The last part of the lecture refers to the
study of stone seals and the development of their production on the island, bearing Greek
and Phoenician influences.
AUTHOR : F. Tsingakou
The lecture, delivered in Nicosia in March 1999, is in fact an imaginary journey in time and
space. Through the writings of European travelers from the fifteenth to the nineteenth
century, Dr Tsingakou brings to life the island’s spatial character over the past centuries.
Drawing on excerpts from travel chronicles, the author traces historical events which have
marked the island, reconstructing a panoramic mural of the wider Hellenic area, Cyprus
especially, during the centuries of the Frankish, Ottoman and British rule.

[From Cyprus to Venice. Cypriots at the Serenissima after the Turkish Conquest
of the Island]
The publication deals with the history of Cypriot Hellenism in Venice and provides a com-
mentary on the relevant archival material. Many of the sources which were used for re-
search into this subject, dating from the mid sixteenth to the mid seventeenth century
approximately, are kept in the archives of the Hellenic Institute for Byzantine and Post-
Byzantine Studies in Venice. These are the codex of wills and donations, the registers of
baptisms and marriages, and the registers of the contributions of the members of the Fra-
ternity. Apart from the archival documentation in the possession of the Institute, regis-
trations of deaths of Cypriots, entered in the archives of the Church of St Antoninus in
Venice, and data from the state archives of Venice have also been taken into account. With
the help of these archival sources, Dr Chrysa Maltezou attempts to trace, on the one hand,
the resilience and adaptability shown by the Cypriots of Venice in their new living condi-
tions, and on the other hand the vitality they channeled into their new homeland.

NOTE BY : S. Michaelides
In his extensive preface, G. K. Ioannides traces the development of the art of dancing from
the antiquity to the seventeenth century, placing special emphasis on the characteristics
of Cypriot popular dances. The book is a revised and augmented edition of Georgios A.
Averof’s 1978 publication entitled Cypriot Popular Dances. It includes the corpus of popular
songs and dances of Cyprus that the author learned from his father, professional popular
violinist Alexander Georgiades. It is a valuable guide for both musicologists and students
of Cypriot demotic music, as well as for popular musicians who keep the island’s musical
tradition alive.

Η Αστική Ενδυμασία της Κύπρoυ κατά τoν 18o και 19o Αιώνα
[Cypriot Urban Costume in the 18th and 19th Centuries]
AUTHOR : E. Rizopoulou-Egoumenidou
This study of the Cypriot urban costume during the last century of Ottoman occupation
compiles valuable information derived not only from extant Cypriot items of clothing,
but also from engravings, watercolours and rare or unpublished written sources — such
as the register with the dragoman Hadjigeorgakis Kornessios’ estate and other lists of the
estates of deceased persons from Nicosia and Larnaca. The wealth of illustrations included
in this edition aptly complements the scientific research conclusions. “Cypriot Urban Cos-
tume in the 18th and 19th Centuries” is an important contribution to the preservation of
memories and traditions and the study of the modern cultural heritage of Cyprus which
since 1974 has become identical with the struggle for national survival.

as well as musical examples of traditional music from the broader Hellenic regions also
encountered in Cyprus. Volume 1 includes an introduction to traditional Cypriot music
and its characteristic features, such as rhythm, melody and form. The 228 songs are divid-
ed into various thematic units. Volume 2 contains the dances and a short biography of
the author by Clelia Tombolis-Theodoulou.
Chorograffia (volume 1)
Description de Toute l'Isle de Cypre (volume 2)
AUTHOR : E. Lusignan
EDITED BY : Th. Papadopoullos
A summary of the two historical works of Stephen Lusignan in the “Cypriology Library”
completes the historiographical trilogy of the period, which has been described as a Cypri-
ot renaissance of letters. The other two parts of this trilogy, the Historia of Florio Bustron
and the Cronaca of Francesco Amadi have been included in volumes 8 and 9 of the same
series. Professor Gilles Grivaud notes in his introduction that the substantive contribution
of Stephen Lusignan to Cypriot historiography lies in his two most basic works: the Choro-
graffia and its augmented French translation, that is, the Description, published with a
view to the sensitization of the public opinion in Europe immediately after the conquest
of the island by the Ottomans in 1571 and the efforts to collect the necessary sum for the
redemption of Cypriots captured by the Turks. The five-year-period which separates the
publication of the two texts provided Stephen Lusignan with ample time to deepen his
thinking and correct his earlier errors, so much so the Description has all the characteristics
of a patient work of maturity.

visitors the opportunity to discover ancient Cypriot art and its development over the cen-
turies. The edition is prefaced by the then chairman of the National Library of France Jean
Favier, eminent numismatist Michel Amandry and the chairman of the Cultural Founda-

The above publication was brought out in 500 numbered copies on the occasion of the
exhibition entitled “Empuries, the Voyage of Return”. This is a translation from Catalan of
the collector’s edition entitled Empuries, inici d’ un retorn, which was published in 55 num-
bered copies in Spring 1992 by the classicist and Modern Greek scholar Alexis Eudald
Solà. In this publication, the well-known Catalan engraver Joan Barbara depicts in a series
of engravings the return journey from the ancient city of Emborion (today Empuries, a
Greek trading colony established by the Phocaeans on the coast of Catalonia, in Spain,
shortly after 600 BC) to the mother-country, 2,500 years later, with Eudald Solà as a guide.
The publication accompanied the exhibition “Chypre. D’Aphrodite à Mélusine: des roy-
aumes anciens aux Lusignans – Cyprus from ancient city-kingdoms to the Lusignans”,
jointly organised by the Cultural Foundation and the Geneva Museum of Art and History
and held at the Geneva Museum of Art and History (October 2006 – March 2007). Texts
and entries for the 328 artefacts presented in the catalogue cover two thousand six hun-
dred years of historical continuity in Cyprus, from the antiquity to the reign of the Lusig-
nans. The catalogue is divided into four large sections “Cyprus in Antiquity”, “Cyprus in the
Byzantine era”, “Cyprus, kingdom of the Lusignans” and “The Latin Orient”.

occasion of the homonymous exhibition “1962. Α Photographic Record of Cyprus by
Manuel Baud-Bovy and Aristea Tzanou” (November 2008 – February 2009). Immediately
after the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960, the French Ministry of Foreign
Affairs offered to assist the newly founded Republic. In consultation with the Government
of Cyprus, they deemed that a study on the development and prospects of tourism on
the island would be of great benefit. Eugène Beaudouin was the architect designated in
charge of the study. Beaudouin then appointed two young architects, his former students,
to carry out the mission: Swiss architect Manuel Baud-Bovy, head of the research team,
and Greek architect Aristea Tzanou. The publication includes photographs and introduc-
tory texts in Greek, English and French. The photographs were selected by Manuel Baud-
Bovy, Aristea Tzanou and Andreas Philippou.

110 years from the establishment of the Bank of Cyprus.
The DVD presents a chronicle of the main milestones in the history of 110 years of the
Bank of Cyprus along with important historical events in the period under review. It also
tells the stories of six humble Cypriots, each of whom achieved success after daring to
take on real challenges: Theophila Hadjiantoni, Michael Kkashialos, Persefoni Pa-
padopolou, Antonios Theodotou, Pavlos Liasides and Stavros Tziortzis. These stories are
presented in tandem with complementary stories that bring to life significant and pio-
neering moments in the history of the cities of Cyprus.

The Holy Monastery of our Lady of Arakas lies to the north west of the village of Lagoud-
era. The monastery’s nave was presumably built toward the end of the 12th century, in
the form of a single-aisled vaulted structure. A second wooden roof, covered with flat
tiles, was later added to protect the church from adverse weather conditions. The nave
was decorated in 1192 with frescoes of exquisite mastery, of late Comnenian style, attrib-
uted to Theodoros Apsevdis, the same artist who painted in 1183 the Engleistra (place of
seclusion) of Ayios Neophytos in Paphos. Fourteenth and seventeenth century frescoes
have also been salvaged. The wooden carved iconostasis dates back to 1763. To the north
of the church lies the two storey building of the monastery, consisting of a row of cells
with an open balcony at the forefront, supported on wooden poles.

Cypriot Artists
AUTHOR : A. Diamantis
A reprint of A. Diamantis’ Αφήγηση (Narrative), first published in 1975 by the Cultural Com-
mittee of the Municipality of Nicosia. In this 1974 text, the artist describes in detail the
conception and creation of his monumental painting “The World of Cyprus” (1967–1972),
dedicated to poet G. Seferis. Written in a lively style, the narrative includes notes from the
artist’s diary, as well as information on the materials, the technique and the consecutive
phases of his work. Despite the extremely difficult conditions in which the work was com-
pleted, A. Diamantis’ ultimate message is one of optimism: “‘The World of Cyprus’ serves
as a foundation for the Castle of new life”.

The first illustrated volume in the series “Cypriot artists” introduces one of the pioneers of
Cypriot academic painting during British rule. Inspired by the notional art of Lytras and
Gyzis, Kissonerghis’ (1889–1963) paintings had a uniform subject matter for half a century:
scenes from everyday life, buildings, landscapes and historic sites. He was the first to de-
pict contemporary Cyprus in his work, thus setting the foundations of modern Cypriot
art. Also of interest is his artistic testimony of a less well-known place of Greek diaspora,
South Africa, where he settled in 1953 and lived until his death, ten years later, without
ever returning to Cyprus. This publication was made possible owing to the contribution
of the heirs of Kissonerghis’ intellectual work who came forward with watercolours, per-
sonal documents, notebooks and photographs of the great artist.

The second volume in the series of great Cypriot artists of the twentieth century is dedi-

Eleni S. Nikita, this volume allows us to enjoy Diamantis’ works whilst providing useful bi-
ographical and bibliographical information, as well as a well-documented analysis of his
work and significant contribution to modern Cypriot painting. E. Nikita notes: “Though
choosing to nurture his painting with nothing else but local material, his art never became

The sixth volume in the series “Cypriot Artists” is dedicated to Solomos Frangoulides. Fran-
goulides belongs to the first generation of Cypriot artists, who led the evolution of Cypriot
painting from a declining Byzantine, religious and popular technique to a more artful and
freely expressive period during the early decades of the 20th century. Solomos Fran-
goulides spent his whole life striving, consistently and honestly, to combine his great love
for art with the need to make a living. Nevertheless, he took part in all major struggles of
his time for social justice, equality and freedom. His work, low-profile and composed, with-
out impressive outbreaks and innovations, was rooted in the reality of his times and
marked his own contribution to the shaping of the new face of Cypriot painting.

In this book of memorabilia, information on the life and work of the two great Cypriot po-
ets, who left an indelible mark on the literary life of the island from the end of the 19th
century through to the Interwar Period, is supplemented through the presentation of
photographic material, documents and their personal belongings. In his preface, Andreas
Christophides notes that Michaelides and Lipertis unleashed their talent in poetry when
they abandoned attempts at using the katharevousa [purifying language] and returned
to the Cypriot idiom. The publication was launched to coincide with the exhibition of the
poets’ memorabilia, organised by the Educational Department and the Bank of Cyprus
Cultural Foundation in commemoration of seventy years from the death of Michaelides
and fifty years from the death of Lipertis.
Twenty-one short stories by prose writer G. Philippou Pierides from his collections entitled
Still Times (1966), Hard Times (1963), A Time of Beatitude (1975) and A Time of Trial (1978),
as well as three short stories, first reprinted here. The stories record in exemplary and mas-
terful writing aspects of the history of Cyprus from the British rule to the 1974 Turkish in-

The volume includes twenty-nine essays by the writer and critic Costas Proussis. Com-
bined, the essays bring out the literary profile of Cyprus from 1930 to the present day.
Proussis, who was a co-founder and director of the journal Kypriaka Grammata (1934)
worked on many aspects of Cypriot literature and had a prominent role in intellectual
matters in the period between the two world wars and up until the struggle for liberation
in 1955–1959. Written from 1930 to 1990, the texts included in this volume are themati-
cally ranged, whilst preserving the language and historical ambiance of each period. The
biographical note gives full references of first publications.
[Seferis’ Cypriot Letters (1954 –1962): From his Correspondence with G.P. Savidis]
The twenty-three letters G. Seferis wrote to G. P. Savidis (1929–1995) during the years
marked by the struggle against British rule illuminate the historical and ideological frame-
work within which the poet wrote his collection of poems entitled “... Κύπρov, oύ μ’ εθέ-
σπισεv”. These letters contribute to a wider understanding of the poet’s commitment to
the cause of Cypriot Hellenism. His close affinities with the Cyprus Question and his un-
conditional trust in the young philologist — to whom he assigned in 1955 the editing of
his Cypriot collection — provided the ideal conditions for the development of a fertile di-
alogue about Cyprus. The letters cover the period during which Seferis’ experiences of
Cyprus underwent a poetic transformation and close in 1961 with the publication of an
honorary volume on his work.

The adventurous life of Epameinondas Frangoudis (1825 –1897) reflects the trials and
tribulations of Hellenism in the nineteenth century. The prominent Cypriot writer studied
at the Ionian Academy in Corfu, published his romantic novel Thersandros in Athens (1847)
and was employed first as secretary of the Greek subconsulate in Larnaca and then as di-
rector of the Greek School in Nicosia (1853). Accused of seditious activities, he was forced
to leave for Constantinople, where he launched the publication of the journal “Thelxinoe”.
He was finally appointed professor of Greek literature in Bucharest. Travels in Montenegro
was published in “Thelxinoe” (1856 –1857) under the title “Travels” and is a unique testi-
mony to an era and an area which today has again been drawn into the public limelight.
It is illustrated with drawings by the author and other contemporary engravings.

The aim of the book is to raise children’s awareness on environmental issues. Through the
publication, children have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the small living
things which they encounter frequently as they go about their everyday business, at
school, on the beach and in their own gardens. The book presents three areas of natural
life: marine life, spiders and insects, and amphibians and reptiles through a wealth of pho-
tographic material and brief descriptions of the creatures’ characteristics and way of life.

Environment
This book fills a significant gap, the absence of Greek bibliography on Cypriot flora. A
short text introduces the reader to the natural habitats of Cypriot flora followed by a de-
tailed presentation of 128 endemic plants. Each entry includes the plant’s botanical and
common names, a short description, its natural habitat, degree of rarity or abundance,
etc. This study of endemic Cypriot flora has led to significant conclusions, i.e. that some
rare plant species are threatened with extinction. A book aimed at specialists and all those
who take an interest in nature and the environment alike.

This documentary offers a comprehensive overview of the life of this bird whose numbers
have unfortunately decreased dramatically in recent years. The griffon vulture — also
known as “dustman of the countryside” — was once a popular vulture that lived in thou-
sands on our island. Its current population is at a critical turning point, close to extinction.
It will take a tremendous effort to reverse the situation given that the wild population is
now reduced to no more than 20 vultures.

Viewed as a miracle of nature, the birth and emergence of both Troodos and Cyprus is
considered wondrous from the perspectives of geological sciences, history and myth. Ow-
ing to its distinctive features, such as the impressive terrain, diversity of its microclimates,
the rich and diverse flora and the surrounding sea, the island has become a synonym for
natural beauty and fertility, justly identified with Aphrodite, the goddess of love and re-
production. These special features, combined with the wealth of its mineral and water re-
sources, have created an extraordinary habitat for man and laid the foundations for ten
thousand years of art and civilisation.

The book explores the role of geology in shaping the natural environment of Cyprus
which has undeniably defined its historical and cultural evolution. Its geographical posi-
tion, natural beauty, singular climatic conditions but above all the extensive exploitation
of its wealth of natural resources have also played a vital role in the island’s historical de-
velopment. Natural resources include minerals, mostly of copper origin, extensive and re-
newable forests and water. These resources have for the most part originated in the Troo-
dos mountain range and are linked with its geological evolution. The island was created
as a result of a sequence of unique and complex geological processes which lasted a few
tenths of millions of years. The peak of the Troodos mountain range, pine covered and
rich in flora, was formed by submarine volcanic action in the depths of a great ancient
ocean, known as the Tethys sea, some 90 million years ago, and later emerged 2000 me-
ters above sea level.

A Guide to Kourion
Located at the Episkopi bay on the south-eastern part of the island, Kourion is ranked
among the most significant archaeological sites in Cyprus. The Guide to Kourion includes
a concise history of the settlement from the Neolithic period to the sixteenth century, an
account of the excavations conducted on the site (from 1873 onwards) and a detailed de-
scription of the remains. Kourion is one of the sites where the Achaeans settled in the thir-
teenth century BC, and where subsequently one of the Cypriot city-kingdoms flourished
until their dissolution by Ptolemy I (312 –310 BC). The site retained its importance under
the Ptolemies and the Romans; its major monuments date from the Hellenistic, Roman
and Early Christian periods (aqueduct, Nymphaeum, agora, theatre, stadium, the building
of the Achilles mosaic, the house of the Gladiators, the Early Christian basilica, the house
of Eustolios etc).

Nea Paphos was founded at the end of the 4th century BC by the last king of Palaipaphos,
Nicocles. When Cyprus came under the Ptolemies the city emerged as an important ad-
ministrative and economic centre. After the annexation of the island by the Romans, in
58 BC, Nea Paphos remained its capital until the fourth century AD, when the Romans
transferred the seat of their administration to Salamis. Remains from the Roman period
include luxurious villas with superb mosaic floors, the most beautiful of all mosaics found
on the island. After a brief history of Nea Paphos from the end of the 4th century to the
Ottoman period, the guide provides detailed descriptions of the House of Dionysus, the
House of Orpheus, the Villa of Theseus and the House of Aion. Also included are an analy-
sis of the mosaics and a brief account of the excavations conducted on the site. Mosaics
in their entirety are inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The Dragoman’s two story stone mansion, built in the late 18th century in the old town
of Nicosia, not far from the Archbishopric, is the most important specimen of Cypriot ur-
ban architecture during the last century of Ottoman occupation (1779 –1878). A unique
monument of modern cultural heritage owing to its distinctive architecture combined
with its elaborately painted interior décor, the building operates today as a museum. Its
large ground hall and the yard particularly lend themselves to exhibitions, lectures and
various cultural events. The guide to this unique monument provides a detailed architec-
tural description of the mansion, a historical analysis of the Ottoman office of the Drago-
man, a biographical note on Hadjigeorgakis Kornessios, as well as an account of the his-
tory of the mansion and the family who owned it. The guide is amply illustrated with
photographs of the exterior and interior of the building, objects inside the mansion, as

The Neolithic settlement of Khirokitia, one of the most important in the eastern Mediter-

area from 1936 to 1946. The excavations were resumed in 1977 by the French archaeo-
logical expedition under Alain Le Brun. The first part of the guide includes the history of
the research conducted on the site, a detailed description of the houses, the architecture,
the materials and building techniques used, their interior arrangement and position of
tools and utensils, the funeral rites and the economy of the inhabitants. In the second
part, A. Le Brun suggests an exemplar guided tour to the archaeological site. In the Ap-
pendix, Sophocles Hadjisavvas, Curator of Monuments, presents the Khirokitia Archaeo-
logical Park, a work of the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus featuring identical repro-
ductions of parts of the city wall and five houses, all built with the same materials and

Kalavassos - Tenta
TEXTS BY : I. A. Todd
SERIES EDITOR : Μ. Iacovou
A multidisciplinary research project was conceived by Ian A. Todd in 1975, aimed at study-
ing the housing system of the valley from the Early Neolithic to the end of the Medieval
period. The project was initiated by excavations in the Kalavassos area in 1976 and is still
in progress. The guide deals with the architectural remains and archaeological finds of the
Neolithic settlement of Tenta, in the vicinity of Kalavassos, a site mentioned on Kitchener’s
map of Cyprus from as far back as 1882. The prehistoric sites of Kalavassos-Tenta and Khi-
rokitia belong to the Aceramic Neolithic and share common features in that they were
surrounded by walls and had mudbrick and/or stone circular domestic structures. The
guide includes chapters on the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods in Cyprus, on the Ace-
ramic Neolithic Period in the Vasilikos Valley, as well as on the Bronze Age in the same area.

The guide introduces two important prehistoric settlements of the Chalcolithic period re-
cently discovered near the Lemba and Kissonerga villages in western Cyprus, north of Pa-
phos. Excavations began in 1976 under Professor Edgar Peltenburg of Edinburgh Univer-
sity. In 1987 the University’s Lemba Archaeological Project created the Experimental Village
of Lemba, the first applied project of experimental archaeology not just in Cyprus but in
the entire Eastern Mediterranean area. The guide provides a detailed presentation of the
two sites and their significant finds: circular buildings, graves and grave goods, objects of
daily life alongside unique specimens of sculpture and pottery. A tour around the Lemba
Experimental Village allows the visitor an insight into multiple aspects of the Chalcolithic
culture in Cyprus.
Guide to Amathus
The guide is a concise presentation of everything learned through historical surveys and
terrestrial or underwater excavations as well as the testimony afforded by means of in-
scriptions and coins in tandem with geophysical, geographical and hydrological research
projects. A presentation of the city’s geographical position is followed by a historical ac-
count of excavations dating back to the years of the Frankish rule (1191 –1489) and the
History of the city and kingdom from the Neolithic (circa 8000 BC) to the Byzantine period
(7th century AD). Salvaged specimens of sculpture, terracottas, pottery, jewelry, utilitarian
and religious objects provide evidence for this historical course. A description of the city
ruins is complemented by outlines and representations. The edition is amply illustrated
with photographs and old engravings.

The city of Palaipaphos, seat of the Kinyrad priest kings, was from the Late Bronze Age
until the early Hellenistic times the only large urban settlement in southwestern Cyprus.
Written by Professor F. G. Maier, Hon FSA (who excavated at Kouklia from 1952), with two
contributions by S. Hadjisavvas and M. - L. von Wartburg, FSA, the Guide traces the history
of Palaipaphos through nearly 5000 years, from the Chalcolithic period to the present day,
and describes in detail all monuments surviving at the Kouklia- Palaipaphos archaeolog-
ical site. Besides the Sanctuary of Aphrodite, these include two unique sites: the Persian
siege ramp at the Northeast Gate, and the well preserved medieval sugar refinery com-
plex at Kouklia-Stavros. Palaipaphos is inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage site list.
The church of our Lady of Asinou is the sole remnant of the Monastery of Forvii, founded
by Magister Nikiforos Ischyrios in 1099. The church is decorated with wall paintings dating
from the 12th, 13th, 14th and 17th centuries. The architecture of the church in conjunc-
tion with the outstanding murals makes it one of the most important surviving Byzantine
monuments, now declared part of World Cultural Heritage (UNESCO). The Guide includes
a historical account of the Monastery of the Forvii, an architectural description of the
monument, a description and commentary on the wall paintings, the wood-carved icon
screen and portable icons. Descriptions are accompanied by ground plans, diagrams of
sections in which the wall paintings are enumerated and colour photographs of the in-
terior and exterior of the monument. A glossary of terms is included along with selected
literature.
The Guide affords a review of the history, architecture and art of two noteworthy wood-
en-roofed churches of the period of Venetian rule (1489 –1571) in Cyprus: Our Lady the
Merciful (Eleousa), known as Podithou, and Our Lady Theotokos (or the Archangel). Al-
though the Church of the Theotokos (or the Archangel) is yet to be inscribed in the UN-
ESCO World Cultural Heritage list, it is included in this publication as it preserves important
wall-painting decoration dating from 1514. The church lies at a short distance from that
of Our Lady Podithou and both monuments are open to visitors throughout the year.
Through the pages of this concise illustrated guide the visitor can learn of the history of
the medieval Monastery of the Holy Cross of Ayiasmati, situated near the village of Pla-
tanistasa. In the chapter discussing the architecture of the church useful information is
given on the typology of the monument and the building materials, while chapters deal-
ing with the wall-paintings of the sanctuary, the main church and the portico include
commentaries and descriptions of the masterful representations which cover almost all
surfaces of the monument’s walls. Another chapter describes the carved wooden sanc-
tuary screen, the icons, the altar and the furnishings of the Church of the Holy Cross of
Ayiasmati. In the last chapter an account is given of the decoration of the church’s wooden
roof-beams and floor, bricks of which bear carved and relief patterns. A glossary of terms
allowing for a better understanding of the texts is also provided in tandem with selected
bibliography. The monument is inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage site list.

The book traces the history, architecture and art of the monastery complex of St John
Lampadistes at Kalopanaghiotis. The complex includes the Byzantine katholikon (main
church), dedicated to St Heraclidius, along with two other churches, those of Saint John
Lampadistes and of the Akathistos Hymn. In these churches, Byzantine and post-Byzan-
tine wall-paintings, dating from the 12th to the 16th century, have been preserved, to-
gether with noteworthy portable icons and woodcarving works. A glossary of terms al-
lowing for a better understanding of the texts is also provided in tandem with selected
bibliography. The monument is inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage site list.
The guide traces the history, architecture and art of this noteworthy small, wooden-roofed
temple that dates back to 1280. The church belongs to the distinctive type of wooden-
roofed temples that are particularly common in Cypriot church building. Useful informa-
tion is given on the typology of the monument and the building materials used, with sep-
arate chapters on the temple’s wall-paintings and commentaries on the exquisite 12th
century-style representations. A glossary of terms allowing for a better understanding of
the texts is also provided in tandem with selected bibliography. The monument is in-

AUTHOR : A. Millas
This publication provides for the first time an overall review of the hitherto unknown his-
tory of these islands, while a record of the last two centuries is given by means of the rich
photographic material. The Princess islands lie scattered between Europe and Asia on the
north-eastern side of the Propontis, indissolubly bound up by the ancient Greeks with
the myth of the expedition of the Argonauts. The Princess islands were to acquire great
significance and importance in the time of the Byzantine Empire. But even after the Fall
of Constantinople, the conquerors respected and tolerated the religion, the language,
the manners and customs of the Greeks, so that throughout the Ottoman rule of Greek
lands, these islands provided a shelter for Greek refugees. During the first decade of the
nineteenth century, Phanariot Greeks and members of the Philiki Etaireia were made wel-
come in the monasteries and their dependencies, to discuss in safety details of the na-
tional uprising. The shedding of the Greek element began in effect in 1910 and reached
its culmination in 1980 with the flow of migration chiefly from the Black Sea regions and
of Kurds, a movement which altered the physiognomy of the region dramatically.

Olympia
The Cradle of the Olympic Games
AUTHOR : X. Arapoyianni
The volume traces the historical development of the sacred site of Olympia from the end
of the Neolithic to the Roman Period. Emphasis is placed on the construction of the tem-
ples and other buildings across different periods in time. Extensive reference is also made
to the most important exhibits of the Museum of Olympia, including the renowned sculp-
tures of the pediment of the Temple of Zeus and the metopes depicting the feats of Her-
cules, the statue of Hermes of Praxiteles and the Nike of Paionios. A special chapter is de-
voted to the Olympic Champions votive offerings. Another chapter deals with the birth
of the Olympic Games, the Olympic program and different athletic events as well as the
Games’ evolution over 1200 years, from 776 BC to 393 AD.

Tο Aρχαίο Θέατρο, οι Παραστάσεις
A publication dedicated to this unique ancient Greek theatre, renowned throughout the
world for its beauty and the harmony of its architectural parts, its acoustics and for hosting
the most famous works and performers ever presented worldwide. It traces the entire
history of the theatre — from the selection of its site, its architectural design and the math-
ematical relations of its construction which produce its unique acoustics, with a detailed
account of the revival of ancient Greek drama, a full catalogue of performances, a record
of performers and reviews, a historical account of the excavations, and hitherto unpub-
lished photographs of its restoration, aerial photographs of the whole archaeological site,
some 200 photographs of all modern performances, models and sketches of stage sets
and costumes by Tsarouchis, Moralis, Vasileiou, Fasianos, etc., with scores by Dimitris
Mitropoulos and Mikis Theodorakis. In brief, it brings together the legendary greatness
which has gone with the site of Epidaurus from antiquity down to the present.
This parchment manuscript of the fifteenth century, a rare item of the Laurentian Library
(Laurentianus 32.4) can now become the possession of bibliophiles around the world by
means of this facsimile edition. It is an important manuscript, of the highest cultural and

rentine Renaissance, Francesco Rosselli. It belonged to one of the most important collec-
tions of manuscripts of the fifteenth century, that of the Medici family. Available in a hand-
crafted box of high aesthetic quality, this work is accompanied by a separate volume
containing texts in Greek and English by D. Maronitis, S. Kotzampasi and I. Giova. A col-

ances directed by Karolos Koun from 1930 to 1987, as well as the activities of the The

rope, Australia, the USA and Israel, who participated in the International Symposium with
the same title organised jointly by the University of Cyprus (Archaeological Research Unit
and Department of Economics) and the Bank of Cyprus in April 1995 on the topic “The
development of the Cypriot economy from the Prehistoric period to the present day”. Pa-
pers presented discuss various aspects and phases of Cypriot economy, covering an ex-
tremely wide chronological range of approximately eight millenniums, from the Neolithic
period to the present day. Subjects presented include: the agrarian economy in prehistoric
times, the importance of bronze for the economic development of the island from the
Late Bronze Age to the Classical period, the importance of timber, oil and sugar for Cypriot
exports, Cypriot economy during British rule, etc.

In May 1995, the European Services Unit of the Bank of Cyprus and the Economic Depart-
ment of the University of Cyprus organised jointly a symposium entitled “The Harmoni-
sation of the Cypriot Economy with the European Union”. Participants included well-
known academics, members of the Cypriot government and the late member of the
European Parliament Y. Kranidiotis. Having acknowledged the importance of timely and
efficient preparation in view of our country’s accession to the European Union, the Bank
of Cyprus — the largest banking group in Cyprus — took it upon itself to launch and sup-
port relevant initiatives, thus sponsoring the publication of the symposium’s proceedings.
The publication coincided with the symposium’s follow-up in Athens, held on 21–22 No-
vember 1996, under the title “Cyprus, European Union and the role of Greece”.
This richly illustrated edition was prepared by the Bank of Cyprus Group on the occasion
of the homonymous exhibition held in Nicosia and London in 1999. The volume presents
for the first time the sketches and watercolours which the French architect and artist Ed-
mond Duthoit made during his travels to Cyprus in 1862 and 1865. Duthoit was sent to
Cyprus by a distinguished historian, the marquis de Vogue, carrying orders to explore the
island, excavate and collect archaeological finds. His sketches and watercolours offer a
panorama of Cyprus in the nineteenth century: people, villages and towns, archaeological
sites and Gothic monuments, churches and mosques. Many of these sketches are accom-
panied by contemporary photographs of the same sites.

Μάνδρες
[Mandres]
AUTHOR : Y. Kypri
A collection of twenty poems named after the Turkish-occupied village of Yiannis Kypri.
The collection presents memories and images of Cyprus before 1974 and the hospitable
village of Mandres with its dignified, noble inhabitants, in the hope that it will rekindle
the memory before oblivion takes over.
AUTHOR : A. Philippou
The album aims to present the wealth of Byzantine architecture demarcating churches
in the Troodos mountains and stir the interest for their protection, study and promotion.
It consists of watercolours and sketches of wooden-roofed churches in the Troodos area.
The roofs of Cypriot churches are singular in that they are perfectly adapted to their sur-
rounding environment and have for many centuries remained intact despite their simple
design.

Τεπάρισσος
[Teparissos]
AUTHOR : Y. Kypri
In his preface, Yiannis Kypri mentions that this publication is dedicated to Teparissos, the
huge cypress that rises next to the monastery of Our Lady of Tohniou, near the author’s
birthplace, the occupied village of Mandres in Famagousta. The first part of the publica-
tion includes twenty-three poems, three of which are metrical poems written in the Cypri-
ot dialect. The second part entitled “Pain which cannot forget” is dedicated, same as the
entire work, to the memory of Phoebos Karayiannis and Yiannis Adamou Karayianni, the
uncle and cousin of the author, missing since 1974, whose remains were located in a mass
grave in the occupied areas.
