STARTER: a video showing the fruits of the spirit
The meaning of ‘fruit’
Fruit in the Biblical context refers to human conducts. Fruit of the spirit are godly
conducts and those of the flesh are ungodly. The term fruit in this context means the kind
of behavior or trait a Christian exhibits in his life which culminates in making him
different from others. Hence, it means a kind of character displayed by someone who
submits himself to be guided by the Holy Spirit, thereby subduing the human nature and
its nature to yield to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
The works of the flesh (Galatians 5:19 - 21)
Apostle Paul admonished the Galatians Christians to walk in the spirit so as not to fulfill
the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lust against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh.
The flesh is contrary to the spirit. The works of the flesh are against the law of God. He
listed the works of the flesh as adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry,
witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envying,
murderers, drunkenness, reveling and so on. Anyone that does any of these things will
not inherit the kingdom of God.

4
The fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-25)
The fruit of the spirit are those conducts that are godly. Every Christian attached to Jesus
produces good fruits (conducts) such as love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness,
goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. The fruits of the spirit encompassed the Ten
Commandments. Christians are expected to bear good fruits as they have been crucified
with Jesus. The flesh with the affection and lust are already crucified, they should learn to
live in the spirit and also walk in the spirit.
How to bear fruit of the Spirit (Acts 2:38, Romans 10:9 -10)
The following are steps to bearing of the fruit of the spirit:-
1. Repentance from Sin

3. Baptism in the name of Jesus
4. Gift of the Holy Spirit
5. Abiding in Jesus Christ

DEFINITION OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS
Spiritual gift is a gift of the Holy Spirit. According to St. Paul, it is the Holy Spirit that
dwells in a man and makes him acknowledge Jesus as Lord. Where the Holy Spirit is
absent in a man, he cannot acknowledge Jesus as Lord. St. Paul said: “There are varieties
of gifts, but the same spirit, and there are varieties of services by the same Lord; and
there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in everyone”
(I Corinthians 12:4-6)
TYPES OF GIFTS
The nine gifts as enumerated by St. Paul are as follows:-
1. The utterance of wisdom
2. The utterance of knowledge
3. Faith
4. Gift of healing
5. The gift of working miracles
6. The gift of prophesy

7
7. The gift to distinguish between spirits (discernment)
8. The gift to speak in tongues
9. The gift to interpreted tongues
All these gifts Paul said, are inspired by the same spirit who apportions individuals as he
will, but the manifestation of the gifts in the individual is for the common good of the
body of Christ (the church). Paul likened gifts to the human body with different parts and
different functions all play an important role for the good of the entire body. So it is with
Christ; by spirit we were baptized into one body of Christ.
Paul, in his analogy, went further to say that God has arranged the different parts of the
body to be mutually interdependent and necessary for the existence of the entire body.
Some parts which seem to be weaker are indispensable. The parts which people consider
less honorable are invested with greater honour; the unpreventable parts are treated with
greater modesty which our presentable parts do not require. God created the body that
there might be no discord, if one member suffers, all suffer together, if one member is
honoured, all rejoice together. In the same way, in the body of Christ (that is the church);
God has appointed apostles, prophets, teachers, workers miracles, healers, helpers,
administrators and speakers in various kinds’ tongues. Almost use their gifts to the glory
of God and for the growth of the church.
The Significance of Paul’s teaching on Spiritual Gifts
1. Since the human body is one so are we who have been baptized by one Spirit into
the body of Christ, the church should therefore act and behave as one united by the
church.
2. In the church, there should be no discrimination of people’s contribution in the
overall good of the church.
3. No member should feel proud for his talent or contribution in the overall good of
the church.
4. There should be no racial discrimination in the church no black, no white, no
Yoruba, Hausa or Igbo, all the people should be seen as one in the body of Christ.
Functions of Spiritual Gifts to the Church

8
1. They are meant for the good of the entire church community.

Paul’s teachings on Talent
Paul, in his teachings on the use of individual gifts, enjoined individual members of the
church to use the gift for the betterment of the church as the body of Christ and to the
glory of God. People should be sober and exercise high sense of humility in their dealings
with one another. People’s gifts differ according to the grace given them by God.
Paul said; “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if
prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; he who teaches, in his
teaching; he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality; he who
gives aid, with zeal, he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness”
People should Endeavour to serve humanity with the gift of God has given them to the
best of their ability and knowledge, all to the glory of God.

10
Paul also likened the spiritual gifts to human body with its different members its own
roles towards the progress of the entire body. No body part can exist independently of the
other but for cooperate existence. Therefore, if one part of the body suffers the entire
body suffers, if one member is honoured, all rejoice.
Ways Individual Talents can be applied in the Churches
1. Those that possess the gifts of good voice for Singing are specially endowed by
God to praise Him in songs and Psalms; they are given special honoring the
church to perform with this gift to the glory of God.
2. The art of teaching is also a special talent from God. Those that have the talent of
teaching should organize Bible lectures with the approval of the church leaders.
3. Those endowed with wealth can contribute meaningfully to the projects of the
church.
Differences between Talents and Spiritual Gifts
1. Talents are in-born while spiritual gifts are given only to believers.
2. Talents are controlled by the possessor while spiritual gifts are controlled by the
Holy Spirit.
3. Talents operates in the circular world while spiritual gifts are basically used in the
church and spiritual environments.
4. Talents is for personal developments while Spiritual gifts is for the edification of
the church.

6. Mention the rewards of forgiveness
KEY WORDS
1. Forgiveness
2. Rewards
3. Offender
4. Reconciliation
STARTER: A video clip showing the dangers of unforgiveness
Meaning of forgiveness
Forgiveness means to pardon a person; to allow somebody who deserves punishment to
go free. It is not every offence that attracts punishment but it may cause the offended
person to hold blame or resentment against his offender. Where the offended person has
decided to forgive his offender, it therefore follows that he would no longer blame or
hold any resentment against his offender. Forgiveness may be achieved in three ways:
1. When the offender realizes his mistake and decides to ask for pardon; in this case
he may be pardoned and the issue is resolved.
2. The offended person may on his part, due to love of God, voluntarily decide to
pardon his offender.
3. The third case is where a third party decides to intervene in the matter and
reconcile the parties concerned.
In whichever way it is achieved, forgiveness is very important in people’s daily life

13
Jesus teachings on forgiveness- Matthew 6:12-15
Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. If we forgive men their trespasses, your
heavenly father will also forgive us and if we do not forgive their trespasses neither shall
your heavenly father forgive us our trespasses.
Jesus also narrated the story of the unforgiving servant who forgiven for his inability to
pay his debt by his the king, but was unable to forgive his colleague who was owing him
a lesser amount of money and also molested him. The king who had earlier shown him
mercy became angry on hearing of his foolish acts, arrested and imprisoned him till he
pays every dime he has owing to serve as punishment to him.
Jesus also told his disciples to forgive his offenders seventy times seven times in a day.
The importance and implications of forgiveness
Forgiveness is very important in the life of every individual in the society, particularly in
the life of Christians. Some could not achieve happy Christian life not because they have
lived reckless lives, but because they have allowed bitterness and un-forgiveness to block
the flow of joy in their lives. Stubborn attitude and unforgiving spirit would never allow
happiness to penetrate the life of such individual.
Bitterness and un-forgiveness are evil phenomena in the life of a person and the society at
large. Unforgiveness may deteriorate to serious problem such as war which could bring
total ruin to the society concerned or to the life of an individual as the case may be.
Where people are able to forgive others, there is peace, harmony and progress. It is ability
of Christians to forgive others that makes God to forgive them when they offend Him.
The importance of forgiveness is inexhaustible. This explains the reason why the Lord
Jesus Christ, during his earthly ministry, took time to teach both the multitude and the
disciples on the need to forgive one another.
St. Paul’s teaching on forgiveness
In Paul’s epistle to his friend, Philemon, a Colossian Christian, St. Paul played a
reconciliatory role between his friend Philemon and his runaway slave, Onesimus who
Paul converted to Christianity. St. Paul appealed to Philemon to compassionately take
back his former servant, Onesimus. The offence of Onesimus was not stated, but he

14
appealed to Philemon to forgive Onesimus whatever offence he might have committed
and take him back, this time not as a slave, but as a brother. Paul, to show how sincere
and how concerned he was, told Philemon to charge to his account any amount Onesimus
must have owed him.
Significant Lessons to Learn
1. St. Paul’s epistle to Philemon is a typical example of how a person should
intervene and reconcile two quarreling or warring parties. St. Paul was Sincere and
honest in his appeal and was prepared to take extra responsibility by accepting to
pay the debt of Onesimus, if there was any. In the same way, whenever one
decides to intervene in any dispute between two individuals, one should he Sincere
in whatever approach one takes.
2. Christians should equally be prepared to take responsibility like Paul to ensure
peace.
3. Paul asked Philemon to take Onesimus as a brother, not as a slave. This shows that
as Christians, we should treat everybody as equal. Housekeepers should be
allowed to enjoy equal privileges with other children in the home. There should be
no racial discrimination among Christians.
4. Above all, to forgive others is divine in that forgiveness is the basis on which
Christians can seek for divine intervention of God in their case.
5. Furthermore, an act of forgiveness should go beyond the mere action of forgiving
but should include rehabilitation and reconciliation.
6. It teaches the lesson of justification by faith in which man who stands condemned
before God because of Sin, is automatically forgiven and acquitted of his Sin
through the redeeming blood of Jesus Christ.
7. As Christians, we should intercede for others as Paul did for Onesimus.
8. Forgiveness of our Sins by God depends on the extent to which we forgive others.
When we forgive, it shows obedience to Christ’s injunction which commands us
to forgive others their Sins so that Clod can forgive our own Sins.

15
9. Forgiveness restores peace and love in a family, community and the country at
large.

3. Tradition
4. Society

STARTER: A video clip showing an ideal Christian family
Meaning and types of family (Colossians 3:18-22)
Family unit is the smallest unit of the larger social society. It consists of the father, the
mother and the children. It may include members of the extended family which are
uncles, cousins, grandparents, nieces etc. Traditionally, the father is the head of the
family. He has the final authority within his family. That man’s decision has far-reaching
consequences in determining the peace, unity and progress of the family. For this reason,
the man and his wife must maintain discipline to be able to take good decisions because
the family units which make up the larger society from the basis of government and the
first training ground for both spiritual and moral education.
A healthy and united family would definitely produce healthy and discipline people that
will make up a nation. Broken homes (families) produce immoral children that end up as
criminals and as such, the whole nation is affected t their criminal activities. A healthy
society can only be produced by healthy family units within the society.

17
Healthy family units can only be built where the individuals that make up the units know
their deities and responsibilities and perform them faithfully. This reason, Paul, in his
epistle to the Colossians, outlined the duties and the responsibilities of every member of
the family and called upon them to perform their duties creditably to ensure the peace and
unity of the different families.
There are two types of families, a nuclear family and the extended family. A nuclear
family is a simple family made up of parents (father and mother) and their children. A
nuclear family is monogamous when it consists of a man his wife and children. It is
polygamous when it consists of a man his wives and children.
The extended family is one which consist of the father, mother and children, as well as
some other relatives such as uncles, cousins, grandparents and aunts living together in
one house or compound. This is often referred to as communal living. Members of this
family usually depend on the father and mother for everything which is needed. It
consists of both near and far related family members who are all living in the same house
or compound.
St. Paul’s teaching on the family (Colossians 3:18-22)
Love and obedience are the only strong forces that can bring unity in a family. For this
reason, Paul, in his epistle to the Colossians, called on wife’s to be subject to their
husbands as it is fitting in the Lord and husbands to love third wives and not to be harsh
on them. Children should honour and regard their parents in everything, for this pleases
God. Fathers should not provoke their children, lest they become discouraged. He equally
advised to obey their earthly masters in everything, not with eye-service as men-pleasers,
but in Singleness of heart, fearing the Lord.
Family units as an institution of God
Family units are institutions set up by God Himself. St. Paul, in his epistle, expressed
what God has in mind for the Christians. If people obey the rules laid down by St. Paul in
running their families, they would not have broken homes as it is often the case today. If
wives cooperate with their husbands, honour them and respect them while husbands on
their part love their wives, care for them, be patient with them and faithful, then there

18
would be no case lighting between husband and wife. If children respect their parents,
honour them, cooperate with them and respect members of the extended family, there
would definitely be love and peace in the family. Paul further said parents should not
provoke their children. It follows that parents must treat their children with love and must
not send them to do obnoxious things that might lead to corruption and evil actions.
Slaves should respect and serve their master with all honesty and not with eye service for
God rewards everyone accordingly
Areas of deviation from the teaching
Many families today have deviated from this laid down standard in Paul’s epistle. Many
parents are very harsh with their children, thereby provoking them to wrath. They ask
them to tell lies on their behalf. Parents encourage their children in corrupt practices such
as examination malpractice, illegal admission to schools etc. all these are actions which
are contrary to the will of God for the upbringing of children.
Many wives today do not have regard for their husbands, while some husbands on their
part do not show love to their wives; instead, the prefer spending their time and money on
other women outside. All these are against the will of God. Some children today are very
lazy. They do not want to help their parents; they quarrel with their parents and abuse
them.
The net result of all these disorderliness in homes is divorce, while children from such
broken homes end up as vagabonds and criminals in the society In view of this,
Christians are enjoined to maintain peaceful home in order to bring up disciplined
children.
Sources of conflict in the family
1. When family members fail to perform their ordained duties
2. Lack of understanding among couples
3. Children’s lack of respect for their parents
4. Failure on the part of parents to pay attention their children’s moral and social well
being
5. Lack of discipline at home

19
6. Curses on children by parents
7. Prudence in financial matters
8. Prayerlessness in the family
9. Lack of proper counsel by parents to children

STARTER: A video clip showing the impact of the humility of Jesus Christ
DEFINITION OF HUMILITY
Humility is a state of being humble, meek, lowly and modest. A humble person is not
arrogant. Humility is one of the attributes of a good Christian. Among the apostles, St.
Paul and St. Peter made remarkable teachings on this.
St. Paul’s teaching on humility (Philippians 2:1-11)
St. Paul, in his epistle to the Philippians, stressed the need for a sense of humility among
the church members. As at the time Paul wrote the message, great disunity existed among
the church members as a result of lack of humility. Paul therefore advised them to be in
harmony and not to do anything out of selfishness or conceit. They should not be self-
centered. They should consider in interest of other above their own.
St. Paul used the case of Jesus Christ to show them what humility is all about. He said
Jesus was in the form of God but he did not count himself equal to God. He took the
form of an ordinary servant and was horn in the likeness of man. In the human form, he

21
humbled himself and became obedient o death, even the death of the cross which was
considered as one of the worst forms of death. For this reason he said, “God has highly
exalted him and given him a name which is above every name, that at the name Jesus
every knee should bow in heaven and on earth, and under the earth, and under the earth
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,” to the glory of God the Father”
(Philippians 2:9-11).
St. Peter’s teaching on humility (1 Peter 5:5-11)
Peter also gave words of exhortation to Christians, especially the youths. He advised the
youths to be loyal to their elders and clothe themselves with humility. This is because
God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. People should therefore humble
themselves under the mighty hand of God, so that in due time, he might exalt them.
Christians should cast all their anxieties on God, for He cares for them. They should be
sober and watchful, for Satan, the adversary, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking
someone to devour. Peter was saying in essence that Christians should resist Satan at all
cost, knowing full well that suffering. Showing forgiveness to others who might have
offended them.

3. Humility creates unity, understanding and progress in the society.

society first in whatever he or she does.

10. A Christians should not be proud. He should be anxious of what to do for the

their many words and long prayer. But to avoid vain repetitions in their prayers because

25
God knows their need before they ask. He also gave the disciples guidelines on how to
pray in what is known as the Lord’s Prayer. “Our father who is in heaven, hallowed be
thy name. Thy kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this
day our daily bread. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against
us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from all evil.”
Jesus further stated that whatever we ask the father in his with faith, it shall be done
James’ teachings on effective prayer
James advised that amidst trials, Christians should not worry but rejoice for their trial of
faith. Faith that is test produces steadfastness and perseverance. If anyone lacks wisdom,
let him ask from God and it will be given. God gives to all men liberally without
reproach. However they should ask in faith without doubt. A doubter is compared to a
wave of the sea driven to and fro. A double minded person is an unstable and receives
nothing from the Lord.
Anyone suffering should pray, anyone cheerful should sing songs of praise, any sick
church member, should call on the church elders to pray for the sick in the name of Jesus,
and should also anoint him. The prayer of faith shall save the sick; the Lord will raise him
up and forgive him of any of his sins committed.
James said that the reason we pray and did not receive is because they did not ask God or
ask amiss to spend it on their selfish lust. They should also confess their sins to one
another so that healing can take place. The effective prayer of the righteous produces
much result. A man like Elijah prayed for drought for three years and six months and
prayed again for the land to produce fruit.
