What is an essay?
An essay is a way to put forward your understanding of
specific topics/ideas/subject; and explain and argue your
points to answer a given question.
An essay is a writing that includes using the knowledge you
have acquired from books as well as your own research.
There are different types of essays:
1. Analytical
2. Descriptive
3. Philosophical
4. Based on current affairs
Let’s first understand what
description and analysis are.
Description: Recently, President Jacob Zuma made the
decision to reshuffle the parliamentary cabinet,
including the firing of finance minister, Pravin Gordhan.
This decision was not well received by many South
Africans.
Analysis: President Zuma’s firing of popular finance minister, Gordhan
drastically impacted investor confidence. This led to a sharp decrease
in the value of the Rand. Such devaluation means that all USD-based
imports (including petrol) will rise in cost, thereby raising the cost of
living for South Africans, and reducing disposable income. This puts
both cost and price pressure on Organisation X as an importer of USD-
based goods Y, requiring it to consider doing Z. Furthermore, political
instability has the added impact of encouraging immigration,
particularly amongst skilled workers whose expertise is valued
abroad.
The descriptive version only tells us what event happened (the
president decided to reshuffle the cabinet), whereas the analysis
extends to discuss the impact of this event on Organisation X. In
other words, it moved way beyond just describing a macro-level
factor, to explain exactly what this means for the organisation.

How to Decide the Headline
1. Choose the right Verb: Verbs play an important role in Headlines
Let’s take a look at a scenario.
Imagine that you are writing about a local company downsizing and
letting part of its staff go. Verbs can make a lot difference in
showing the severity of the situation.
Toy company laying off 300 employees
Toy company slashes employees
Toy company axes 300 jobs
How to Decide the Headline
2. The headline should always use an active verb to make it
vivid and exciting.
Present and Future
The choice of verb tense is strategic, because it will not only
help you report the facts, it will make them more vivid. Here
are a few examples.
How to Decide the Headline
Present
First Indian restaurant opens at Parkdale Mall
The verb opens is present tense. The restaurant
has already opened and served customers, but the
use of the present tense makes it more vivid. This
headline would be of interest to people who love
Indian food, and/or go to that mall.
How to Decide the Headline
Future
Maharaja restaurant to host cookery lessons monthly
In this case, to host refers to something that will happen in
the future.
The Maharaja restaurant in Parkdale Mall will be hosting
cooking lessons every month so local cooks can bring an
authentic taste of India into their everyday meals.
Will be hosting and can bring both serve as future tenses,
referring to things that have not happened yet, but will
soon.

Things to Keep in Mind
1. Report writing is formal so you should avoid using
apostrophes and contractions such as "it's" and "couldn't".
Instead, use "it is" and "could not".
2. Be informative. Your job is to provide information. You
don’t need to provide unnecessary details. Stick to
important information. Please do not include opinions.
3. If you are writing a report on an event, make sure the
events should be presented in a sequence.
4. Use more of reported (indirect) speech in the report.
Things to Keep in Mind
6. Usually the present perfect tense or simple past tense is
used in report writing. Present perfect tense is used to
refer to an action or incident that recently took place and
continues to affect the present. For example, heavy rainfall
has damaged the roads. More than 500 deaths have been
reported.
Simple past tense is used to refer to an action or incident
that took place in the remote past and does not have an
impact in the present. For example, The rain water receded
last month.
Remember, sometimes past perfect tense is also used to
show chronological order of two incidents that took place in
the past one after the other. For example, The rescue team
had arrived before the helicopter caught fire.

The only city with a greater percentage of part-time
workers was Delhi, with around 33 percent working part
time. Both cities saw an increase in the percentage of
people working part time in 2010. In Pune, the Percentage
rose to over 30 percent and in Delhi percentage rose to
just over 35 percent.

Chennai had the smallest percentage of part-time workers in 1980, with just over a
ten percent. However, this rose to almost 20% in 2010 which is a large increase.
Lastly, Mumbai was the only city which had a decreasing percentage of part-time
workers. In 1980, it had around 15% of people in part-time work. This decreased by
a couple of percent in 2010.
Points to keep in mind while writing a report or analysis on line graph.
• Plan your writing. You can usually divide it into three
paragraphs: introduction, first main paragraph and second
main paragraph.
• Begin with an introductory sentence that describes the
graph in general terms, but don’t repeat the exact wording
of the question.
• Then describe one or two general trends shown in the graph.
Don’t go into detail; just report the most important trends
you see when you look at the graph.
• If the line graph has more than two lines, try to arrange
the data into two or three groups. For example, you could
divide the data into rising trends and falling trends.
• Focus on the general direction of a trend; don’t write
about each change in direction of a line.
• Remember, don’t try to analyse or explain the
information in the graph, or do any calculations; just
describe and report it.
• Make sure your handwriting is clear and legible.

• The flow chart shows the main feature of a coin-operated
photo booth, which allows the user to take large or
passport-size self-portraits.
• Two buttons on the outside of the booth allow you to
select the size of photo (large format or passport size). If
the large format setting is chosen, you will only receive
one photo. Passport-sized photos are issued in sets of
four. Two buttons below these let you choose colour or
black and white, although you must choose colour for
passport photos. There is also a slot on the outside of the
booth for the insertion of coins, and a larger slot where
the photos are delivered.
• Inside the booth, there is an adjustable seat to
sit on. The seat should be adjusted so that your
eyes are level with the arrow on the screen. A
mirror allows you to check your appearance
before the photos are taken. The curtain in the
doorway should be closed when the photos are
taken. A light to the right of the screen comes
on, telling you to prepare. After this, the flash
goes off after three seconds. The photographs
are delivered outside within sixty seconds.

Let’s Take a Look at the Answer
The flowchart illustrates the various steps
that a high school student must follow to
enter university.
Once the high school has been obtained,
students need to complete an application
for university entrance. This can be
downloaded from the university website.
The completed application should then be
sent to the administration.
Applicants receive a reply two weeks later which
is provisional acceptance, a rejection or an
acceptance. If a rejection is received, students
can either cancel their application altogether or
complete an application for an alternative course
and send to the administration office.
A provisional acceptance means that more
documentation is required.
Applicants in this situation should
complete the additional documentation
and submit them to the office. When an
acceptance is received, the applicant
should complete the enrolment form and
select which subjects he or she wishes to
undertake and register with the dean.
When all this is complete, the applicant
may enter university.

a school in 2004 and the plan for
changes to the school site in 2024.
Summarise the information by
selecting and reporting the main
features, and make comparisons
where relevant. Write in 150 words.
Let’s Take a Look at a possible answer
The maps illustrate how a school site is planned
to be developed over a 20-year period. Overall, there
will be extensive developments with regards to
construction of buildings, facilities and roads in the
school site, and the number of students will also
increase significantly. In 2004, there was only one car
park to the west of the site where the main entrance
to the school was located. There were also two school
buildings, accommodating 600 students altogether,
separated by a path running from the main entrance
to the sports field in the east.
The school was surrounded by woodland in the north,
south and east. There are plans to increase the number of
students served by the school by 400 in 2024. As a result, a new
school building will replace the old sports field, and the two
original buildings are going to be joined together. The old path will
then connect these to the new building number 3, no longer
running to the main entrance. Furthermore, a part of the
woodland in the east is planned to be deforested and replaced by
a new car park as well as a new, smaller sports field. Finally, a new
road will be paved passing south of the school building, which will
connect the two car parks.

What is a speech? How is it different from other writing skills?
Writing for public speaking isn’t so different from other types of
writing. You want to engage your audience’s attention, convey
your ideas in a logical manner and use reliable evidence to support
your point. But the conditions for public speaking favour some
writing qualities over others. When you write a speech, your
audience is made up of listeners. They have only one chance to
comprehend the information as you read it, so your speech must be
well-organized and easily understood. In addition, the content of
the speech and your delivery must fit the audience.

Précis Writing (pronounced- Prey-si)
Precis writing is an exercise in compression. A
precis is the gist of a passage expressed in as few
words as possible. A precis should give all
essential points so that anyone reading it will be
able to understand the idea expressed in the
original passage. Precis writing can be considered
as an art. It is a subtle way of writing the long
passages into crisp and cohesive short paragraph.
Précis Writing (pronounced- Prey-si)
And that is why it is very important to know
the basics of precis. If you are in the field of
communication, you will find precis writing to
be a useful tool. A precis writing is not just
lifting the words from the original paragraph.
It should be written in a precise manner in
your own words.
Rules of Writing a Precis
There is no fixed pattern to write a precis.
But we must follow certain rules and
procedure so that the precis can be more
effective. Follow the right diction and you
will be able to write a good precis.
For a good precis, follow
this procedure
Start by reading the paragraph thoroughly and
then understand the central theme or the idea.
It is important that you identify the idea so that
you incorporate that in the required precision.
Check whether the total number of words is
given or not. If it is not given than count out the
total words in the paragraph.
For a good precis, follow
this procedure
If you have not understood the precis in one go
then give it 1-2 more reads. Make sure you are
clear with the meaning of the passage.
While reading the paragraph highlight the main
points and make notes of it. Try to find which
information is irrelevant for your precis.
For a good precis, follow
this procedure
The heading is very critical, so give it a good
thought before finalizing it. It is better to give the
heading after you complete writing the precis.
The notes or the points that you have highlighted
are very important.
As the precis should follow the logical order,
arrange these points in the same.
For a good precis, follow
this procedure
For officials, you need to provide titles and
designations rather than names. If nothing is
provided then you go with the personal
name, but make sure that you follow the
same pattern throughout your writing.
For a good precis, follow
this procedure
Before submitting your draft, review it
properly as the precis is already in a short
format, errors should be avoided.
Have a final glance at the paragraph to make
sure that you have missed out on anything. A
good practice would be to count the number
of words in the precis and put it in a bracket at
the end of the precis.
How to write a précis?
Let’s take a look at a sample.
Read the passage carefully. You are
required to write a précis for it in one-third
the number of words used in the passage.
Remember to give a title.
Step 1- Read the passage
carefully.
Step 2: Read the passage once more
and note the main points.
Compare the points you listed with the points given below.
1. Working classes enjoy better living conditions in the
present century.
2. In earlier civilisations there was a big gap between the
conditions of kings, etc. and those of the masses.
3. The effect of the Industrial Revolution on the lot of the
working classes is significant.
4. The starting of Trade Unions.
Step 3 - Can you write a précis using
the main points?
Share your answer.
Step 4- Can you reduce the word
count further?
Here’s the final précis.
What title would you
give to the précis?
Suggested title for the précis is ‘Industrial
Revolution and the Working Class’.
Your turn to try!
Read the passage carefully and pick out four
main points from it. Then write a précis.
The use of repetition is the simplest form of
advertising. In advertisements, repeated use of a
particular phrase or trade-mark aims to make such
an impression on the customer that he will tend to
buy that product. Indeed, some trade-names,
'Vaseline' for example, have become so well known
that they are used instead of the real name of the
products. Owing to the large number of consumer
articles and products now in the market, advertising
by repetition is less effective than it was in the past
Let’s take a look at
another sample.
Précis:
A Deadly Enemy – Earthquake Earthquake is the mankind's
deadly enemy. Earthquake strikes all without a distinction
of nationality or political affiliation. The power of a quake
is greater than that of any man-made weapon of
destruction. An earthquake strikes mankind without a
warning. A modern city when struck is reduced -to a nibble.
A quake strikes plains, seas and mountains causing all
round destruction. The quake struck Lisbon in 1755
killing 450; Peru in 1970 killing 50,000; Alaska in 1968
moving it 80 feet into the Pacific Ocean. Scientists are
trying to find out means to combat earthquakes, to
predict the origin of the quake so that precaution can
be taken to save man and property from destruction.

What is Reading Comprehension?
Understanding and interpretation of written text. The
text can be fiction or non-fiction in nature.
How is reading comprehension helpful?
It helps both in writing and reading. It offers vocabulary
and variety of sentence formation.
Majorly, questions in a reading comprehension test
are based on the following strategies of reading.
1. Locating specific information
2. Inference (of words, sentences, thoughts);
drawing conclusions (author’s message)
3. Main idea (central theme, suitable title)
4. Summarizing
Locating specific information
It means that the answer is in the passage and
does not require to be changed. You just need to
locate the specific (as per the demand of your
question) and use it to write your answer.
This type of question is the most common in all
reading comprehension tasks.
Let’s take a look at some examples.
Read the passage and answer the question.
Read the passage and answer the question.
Read the passage and answer the question.
What may cause a serious injury while using
trampoline?
Summarizing is a strategy that we use regularly.
Summarizing is when we take large selections of
text and reduce them, making sure to include the
main points and the general idea of the text. The
purpose of this strategy is to pull out the main ideas
out of the passage and focus on the key details.
Remember that you will not be asked to give
summary of the complete passage. You may be
asked to summarise a certain portion of the passage.
Understanding Inference
Using information that is stated in a passage to draw
an assumption that is not stated. For example, “The
furry animal sat in her master’s lap, purring
contently.” You might think/say that the “furry
animal” is a cat, given the information—and that
would be an inference.
To infer means to arrive at a conclusion by reasoning
from evidence.
Vocabulary Questions
Context means the words, phrases, and
sentences surrounding an unfamiliar word. The
context can help you make an educated guess
about a new word or phrase (vocabulary).
Main Idea
The main idea is the central, or most important,
idea in a paragraph or passage. It states the
purpose and sets the direction of the paragraph or
passage. The main idea may be stated or it may be
implied.
Reading Comprehension 1
Read the passage carefully and answer the
questions that follow.

Make points that you think are
important for translation.
Let’s try and understand how
translation is done.
Step 1- Read the passage carefully.
Master Rule: Do not translate word to
word. Translate the meaning: Sentence
by sentence.
What you need to remember:
1. What is the central theme/main
idea?
You can see the passage talks about a
conversation between two friends who are
discussing about a get together / gathering.
2. Pay attention to the verbs.
It is important to understand what is
happening.
3. Look closely at the tenses used.
There are mixed variety of tenses.
Remember that tenses should
remain same in the translated text.
4. Also, remember to use correct voice
(active/passive).
It will help you form the correct sentence.
It is important to remember if the
sentence formation rule is: Sub-verb-
object or object-verb- (subject).
5. Sometimes, there may be lengthy or
