Teenagers through history
For a long time in history, at least in British culture, we didn't have a word for the period between 12 and 20 years
old. The word 'adolescent', meaning 'growing up', existed, but it was not used by ordinary people. For thousands of
years, people were either children or adults. There was no special time for being a teenager like we know today.
Before there were factories, as soon as children were strong enough, most of them started working in the fields. A
few learnt a job, like making furniture. Young people learning jobs were called 'apprentices'. There wasn't much time
for the fun that teenagers have today. When you were young, you were a child. Then, suddenly, you were expected to
act like an adult.
In the 19th century in Britain, schools became important for all children. At the same time, new laws stopped
children from doing dangerous jobs, like working under the ground. Other laws also stopped them from working long
hours. Life for young people was not just factory work or farm work anymore.
So, the teenage years as a special time is a new idea. The word was first used in the 1940s. The idea has become
more and more important with each new generation. Now, being a teenager is a special part of growing up.

You know I love going to see waterfalls, rock formations, mountains, coral reefs and other natural wonders.
Most of these are thousands or even millions of years old. They are beautiful, because they are a long way

sea life. Tourists are told to stay away from the reef itself. But some people who are scuba diving break off
pieces of coral and take them home. Another problem is the waste that tourists leave behind. In the Galápagos
Islands, too much waste is damaging the environment and even killing unique animals and plants. Don't stop
visiting natural wonders, but only go where you are told to go, when you are told to go there!

My name is Pedro. Growing up, I lived in a big house with my parents, my two brothers and one sister, three
