Discussion on Intensifiers

Introduction:

 Teacher: "Today, we’re going to talk about intensifiers! Can anyone tell me what an intensifier
might be?"

 Student Response: (Expect answers like "words that make something stronger" or "words that
add more meaning")

 Teacher: "That’s right! An intensifier is a word that helps to make an adjective or an adverb
stronger. It adds extra meaning and makes your sentences more vivid and interesting."

What Are Intensifiers?

 Teacher: "Let’s say you're telling someone about how great a book is. You could say, 'The book is
good.' But if you really want to show how much you liked the book, you might say, 'The book is
very good,' or 'The book is extremely good.' The words very and extremely are intensifiers
because they make the adjective 'good' even stronger!"

 Teacher: "Intensifiers work with both adjectives and adverbs. Let’s go over some examples:"

For Adjectives:

 "The mountain is beautiful." → "The mountain is so beautiful."

 "The ice cream is delicious." → "The ice cream is really delicious."

For Adverbs:

 "She runs fast." → "She runs really fast."

 "He speaks clearly." → "He speaks quite clearly."

Why Are Intensifiers Important?

 Teacher: "Intensifiers help us explain how much we feel or how strong something is. They make
our language more colorful and help others understand exactly what we mean. Without
intensifiers, we might sound like we're not excited or serious enough."

Types of Intensifiers:

 Teacher: "Here are some common intensifiers you can use with adjectives and adverbs."

For Adjectives:

o Very

o Really

o So

o Extremely

o Quite

For Adverbs:

o Really

o Too

o Quite

o Extremely

o So

Important Reminder:

 Teacher: "Be careful not to overuse intensifiers! Using too many can make your writing sound
exaggerated. Stick to one strong intensifier to make your point, and avoid using too many like 'so
very really awesome.' It’s better to say, 'The movie was really awesome.'"
