3.3 Ground connection

In most applications, industrial controllers are installed in control cabinets that also contain electromagnetic switch-
ing elements (relays, contactors), transformers, motor controllers, frequency inverters, etc. Different kinds of elec-
tromagnetic interference inevitably exist in such control cabinets.
Generally, this kind of interference cannot be avoided. However, if suitable grounding, shielding and other pro-
tective measures are taken, negative influences between devices can be considerably reduced. These protec-
tive measures include control cabinet grounding, module grounding, cable shield grounding, protective circuits on
electromechanical switching elements, the correct use of cables as well as taking into account the cable cross
section and type.
Grounding essentially has 2 different functions:
• Protective grounding
• Dissipation of electromagnetic disturbances

3.3.1 Directly to the back wall of the control cabinet

The housing must be conductively connected (screwed in) to the back wall of the control cabinet using the 4
mounting holes.

Figure 1: Installation - Directly to the back wall of the control cabinet

For coated back walls, a sufficient connection is only guaranteed if the screw connection is made with a screw
thread on the back wall. If this is not the case, a contact washer must also be provided between the mounting
nut and back wall.

• The device is switched off.
• The device is in the startup phase.
• The interface or device is not configured correctly in Automation Studio.
• The interface or device is defective.

Managing node (MN)

The network is monitored for POWERLINK frames. If a frame is not received within the configured time window (timeout), the
interface immediately enters mode PRE_OPERATIONAL_1.
If POWERLINK communication is detected before the time expires, however, then the MN is not started.

Controlled node (CN)

The network is monitored for POWERLINK frames. If a frame is not received within the configured time window (timeout), the
interface immediately enters mode BASIC_ETHERNET. If POWERLINK communication is detected before this time expires,
however, the interface immediately enters mode PRE_OPERATIONAL_1.
Flickering Off Mode: BASIC_ETHERNET
(approx. 10 Hz) The interface is in mode BASIC_ETHERNET. The interface is operated in Ethernet mode.

Managing node (MN)

This mode can only be exited by resetting the controller.

Controlled node (CN)

If POWERLINK communication is detected during this mode, the interface enters mode PRE_OPERATIONAL_1.
Single flash Off Mode: PRE_OPERATIONAL_1
(approx. 1 Hz) The interface is in mode PRE_OPERATIONAL_1.

Managing node (MN)

The MN is in "reduced cycle" operation. The CNs are configured in this mode.
Cyclic communication is not yet taking place.

Controlled node (CN)

The CN can be configured by the MN in this mode. The CN waits until it receives an SoC frame and then switches to mode
PRE_OPERATIONAL_2.
On Controlled node (CN)
A solid red LED in this mode indicates failure of the MN.
Double flash Off Mode: PRE_OPERATIONAL_2
(approx. 1 Hz) The interface is in mode PRE_OPERATIONAL_2.

Managing node (MN)

The MN begins cyclic communication (cyclic input data is not yet evaluated).
The CNs are configured in this mode.

Controlled node (CN)

The CN can be configured by the MN in this mode. A command then switches the mode to READY_TO_OPERATE.
On Controlled node (CN)
A solid red LED in this mode indicates failure of the MN.

Green Red Description
Triple flash Off Mode: READY_TO_OPERATE
(approx. 1 Hz) The interface is in mode READY_TO_OPERATE.

Managing node (MN)

Cyclic and asynchronous communication is taking place. Any received PDO data is ignored.

Controlled node (CN)

The configuration of the CN is completed. Normal cyclic and asynchronous communication is taking place. The transmitted
PDO data corresponds to the PDO mapping. Cyclic data is not yet evaluated, however.
On Controlled node (CN)
A solid red LED in this mode indicates failure of the MN.
On Off Mode: OPERATIONAL
The interface is in mode OPERATIONAL. The PDO mapping is active and cyclic data is evaluated.
Blinking Off Mode: STOPPED
(approx. 2.5 Hz) The interface is in mode STOPPED.

Managing node (MN)

This mode does not occur for the MN.

Controlled node (CN)

No output data is produced or input data supplied. It is only possible to enter or leave this mode by a corresponding command
from the MN.

5.3 Programming the system flash

General information
The Automation Runtime operating system, system components and application project must be installed on the
flash drive in order for the application project to be processed on the CPU.

Installation via online connection

When delivered, the CPUs are equipped with Boot AR with a limited range of functions. This runtime system is
started in boot mode. It initializes and operates the Ethernet and integrated serial RS232 interfaces, making it
possible to download a runtime system.
Enabling the boot mode:
• Setup by button: See section "Operating mode" on page 14.
• Invalid flash drive
► Switch on the supply voltage for the CPU. In boot mode, the CPU starts with Boot AR.
► Establish a physical online connection between the programming device (PC or industrial PC) and the CPU
(e.g. over an Ethernet network or the RS232 interface).

► Before an online connection can be established via Ethernet, the CPU must be assigned an IP address. To
do so, select the following menu option in Automation Studio: Online / Settings.
Then search for the B&R target systems located in the local network. Select the following menu command
for this: View / Online settings / Browse.
The CPU should appear in the list. If the CPU has not already received an IP address from a DHCP server,
right-click to open the shortcut menu and select the following command: Set IP parameters.

5.4 Data and real-time clock buffering

The CPUs do not use a battery. This makes them completely maintenance-free. The following measures make
operation without a backup battery possible.
Data and real-time clock buffering Type of buffering Note
Remanent variables FRAM This FRAM stores its contents ferroelectrically. Unlike normal SRAM, this does
not require a battery.
Real-time clock Gold foil capacitor The real-time clock is buffered for approx. 1000 hours by a gold foil capacitor. The
gold foil capacitor is completely charged after 3 continuous hours of operation.

8 Derating
Digital outputs DO01 to DO33 can be loaded with up to 2 A. However, the summation current per output driver
is only permitted to be 2 A. An output driver always operates 2 outputs, one with an odd number and the next
one with an even number.
Example: Output 1 and output 2, output 3 and output 4 or output 31 and output 32. Output 33 can be loaded with
2 A without restriction.

9 General data points

This CPU is equipped with general data points. These are not CPU-specific; instead, they contain general infor-
mation such as system time and heat sink temperature.
General data points are described in section "Additional information - General data points" of the X20 system user's
manual.

10 Function description
10.1 Analog inputs

10.1.1 Input filter

Analog inputs 1 to 7 are equipped with a configurable input filter and input ramp limit. The filter and ramp limit are
calculated with a cycle of 1 ms.

10.1.2 Input ramp limiting

Input ramp limiting can only be performed in conjunction with filtering; input ramp limiting is performed before
filtering. The difference of the input value change is checked for exceeding the specified limit. In the event of
overshoot, the tracked input value is equal to the old value ± the limit value.
Adjustable limit values:
The limit value is to be interpreted as "Change in value every 1 ms".
Value Limit value
0 The input value is applied without limiting.
1 0x3FFF = 16383
2 0x1FFF = 8191
3 0x0FFF = 4095
4 0x07FF = 2047
5 0x03FF = 1023
6 0x01FF = 511
7 0x00FF = 255

Table 4: Input ramp limiting

Input ramp limiting is well suited for suppressing disturbances (spikes). The following examples show the function-
ality of input ramp limiting based on an input jump and a disturbance.

Example 1
The input value jumps from 8000 to 17000. The diagram shows the tracked input value with the following settings:
Input ramp limiting = 4 = 0x07FF = 2047
Filter level = 2

Example 2
A disturbance is imposed on the input value. The diagram shows the tracked input value with the following settings:
Input ramp limiting = 4 = 0x07FF = 2047
Filter level = 2

10.1.3 Filter

The input value is evaluated more or less strongly depending on the filter level. Input ramp limiting can then be
applied based on this evaluation.

11.1.5.1 Counter01 - Counter02

Event counter / Gate measurement / Period measurement

Input:
• Counter for inputs 1 and 2
The resolution for gate/period measurement depends on the counting frequency:

T ... Period duration or gate time [s]

in ... Digital value
f ... Counter frequency [Hz]
With an external counter frequency, input Counter02 is used as the frequency input. Counter02 is disabled as a
