Activity Sheet - Fossil Fuel 1 3

The document discusses the heavy dependence of society on fossil fuels, particularly petroleum, which is a non-renewable energy source. It presents data on projected crude oil production and consumption through 2025, indicating a decrease in production and an increase in consumption. The author suggests transitioning to renewable energy sources, such as solar energy, to mitigate potential oil shortages in the future.

Fossil Fuel Use

Background
As a society, we are very dependent
on fossil fuels, especially
petroleum products. The primary use
of petroleum is gasoline, which
we use to power our automobiles.
We also use petroleum
products to heat our homes, lubricate machinery, and to make plastics. Because
petroleum is a FOSSIL FUEL, it is a NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCE. This
means that there is a limited supply, and we will run out over time. This situation is
worsened by the fact that the rate at which we are consuming these fossil fuels is
increasing as Americans are buying more and more cars and SUVs with low fuel
efficiency. This means that we will run out of these fossil fuels even faster.

Purpose
You are to examine the projected rates of fossil fuel production and consumption over
23 years to arrive at conclusions about our current state of affairs and offer suggestions
on how to change.

Instructions
Graph the data points given below in BAR GRAPH format in the area provided. The
first graph will be the estimated crude oil production through 2025. The second graph
will be the estimated consumption through 2025. Answer the accompanying questions.

Questions:

1. Identify the dependent and independent variables from the Crude Oil Production
Chart.
- The dependent variable from the crude oil production chart was the oil
production whilst the independent variable was the year.
2. Was there an increase or decrease in the projected oil production through 2025?
Why do you think this is?
- There was a decrease in oil production through 2025 due to the fact that
perhaps fossil fuels which produces these oils are non-renewable making
it a scarce resource to find alongside the increasing demand for oil.

3. Was there an increase or decrease in the projected oil consumption through

2025? Why do you think this is?
- There was an increase in the projected oil consumption through 2025. In
my own opinion, the increase was due to the increased demand for the
use of oil in the households of people as communities start to transition
into middle to higher classes in terms of their social status, and how oil is
still needed for countries power their electricity.

4. How old will you be in 50 years? What do you think will happen in 50 years to
your life and our general society based on the trends shown in these graphs?
- In 50 years, I will be 66 years old. I like to think that 50 years from now
civilization would have advanced enough to find a way to allow us to
switch to allow renewable sources to become our main source of energy
consumed. But based on the trends the graphs show I think the projected
increase for oil consumption will keep increasing and the decrease of oil
production will continue to go downhill if nothing is done about it.

5. Give one example of a change that we can make to avoid a possible oil shortage
crisis.
- To avoid a possible oil shortage crisis we can look into the usage of solar
energy in our households to help somewhat reduce our consumption of oil
since this is one of the most accessible renewable resource.
