Invariance Principle- If there is repetition look for what does not change!

1 Invariance Principle- Easy


1. I have 27 socks in my drawer. Every time I open the drawer I take out a pair of socks or put a pair
back in. Prove that the drawer will never be empty.

2. There are several + and - signs on a blackboard. You may erase 2 signs and write + if they are equal
and - if they are unequal. Prove the last sign on the board does not depend on the order of erasure.
3. (TT 1987) A machine gives out five pennies for each nickel inserted into it. The machine also gives
out five nickels for each penny. Can Peter, who starts out with one penny, use the machine in such a
way as to end up with an equal number of nickels and pennies? (1987)

4. Suppose the positive integer n is odd. First Al writes the numbers 1,2,...4n-1 on the board. Then he
picks any 2 numbers a,b erases them, and replaces them by their difference. Prove that an odd number
will remain at the end.
5. There are a white, b black, and c red chips on a table. In each step you may choose 2 chips of different
colors and replace them by a chip of the third color. When can you have only 1 chip left at the end?
What color will it be?

2 Medium
1. (Leapfrog Square) 4 frogs sit at the corners of a square. In each step, one frog (A) jumps over another
frog (B), so that the distance between the frogs is still the same. Is it possible that at some later time,
they are at the vertices of a larger square?
2. (TT 1984) On the island of Camelot live 13 grey, 15 brown and 17 crimson chameleons. If two
chameleons of different colours meet they both simultaneously change colour to the third colour (e.g.
if a grey and a brown chameleon meet each other they both change to crimson). Is it possible that
they will eventually all be the same colour?
3. A circle is divided into 6 sectors. The numbers 1,0,1,0,0,0 are written into the sectors, counterclockwise
in that order. Each step you may increase two neighboring numbers by 1. Is it possible to equalize all
numbers by a sequence of such steps?

4. Start with 3, 4, 12. In each step you may choose two of the numbers a, b and replace them by .6a − .8b
and .8a + .6b. Is it possible to reach 4, 6, 12 after finitely many steps?
5. In a 8x8 checkerboard you may repaint all squares (a) of a row or column or (b) of a 2x2 square. Can
you attain just one black square?

6. The numbers 1,2,...n are arranged in that order. In one step you may switch any 2 integers. Prove you
cannot reach the initial order after an odd number of steps.
7. Start with a mxn table of integers. In one step you may change the sign of all numbers in any row or
column. Show you can achieve a nonnegative sum of any row or column.

1. The number |99 .{z
. . 99} is written on a blackboard. Each minute, one number written on the blackboard

and the resulting 2 numbers are written. Is it possible that at some point (after the first minute) all

3. (BAMO 2006) We have k switches arranged in a row, and each switch points up, down, left, or right.
Whenever three successive switches all point in different directions, all three may be simultaneously
turned so as to point in the fourth direction. Prove that this operation cannot be repeated infinitely
many times.
4. (USAMO 1994/2) The sides of a 99-gon are initially colored so that consecutive sides are red, blue,
red, blue, . . . , red, blue, yellow. We make a sequence of modifications in the coloring, changing the
color of one side at a time to one of the three given colors (red, blue, yellow), under the constraint
that no two adjacent sides may be the same color. By making a sequence of such modifications, is it
possible to arrive at the coloring in which consecutive sides are red, blue, red, blue, red, blue, . . . ,
red, yellow, blue?

4 Extremal Principle- Easy


1. n numbers are written on a circle so that each is the average of the 2 adjacent numbers. Prove that
all the numbers are the same.
2. Prove that every convex polyhedron has at least 2 faces with the same number of sides.

3. Prove that 5 is irrational.

4. A finite number of points are in the plane. Any 3 of the points form a triangle with area at most 1.
Show that all points lie in a fixed triangle of area 4.
5. (BAMO 2004) A tiling of the plane with polygons consists of placing the polygons in the plane so that
interiors of polygons do not overlap, each vertex of one polygon coincides with a vertex of another
polygon, and no point of the plane is left uncovered. A unit polygon is a polygon with all sides of
length one. Prove that it is impossible to find a tiling of the plane with infinitely many unit squares
and finitely many (and at least one) unit equilateral triangles in the same tiling.

5 Medium
1. 2n + 1 gangsters are placed in the plane so their mutual distances are all distinct. Then everyone
shoots his nearest neighbor. Prove that (a) at least one person survives (b) nobody is hit by more than
5 bullets (c) the set of segments formed by the bullet paths does not contain a closed polygon.
2. Prove that a cube cannot be divided into pairwise distinct cubes.
3. A set S of people have the following property: Any 2 with the same number of friends in S have no
common friends in S. Prove there is a person with exactly one friend in S.
4. There are n students in each of 3 schools. Any student has n friends in total from the other 2 schools.
Prove that you can select one student from each school, so they are all friends with each other.

6 Hard

1. (Dirac’s Theorem) Prove that every graph with n ≥ 3 vertices with minimum degree at least 2 has
a Hamiltonian cycle, that is, a cycle which includes all vertices.
2. (UM 2004) There is a collection of 2004 circular discs (not necessarily of the same radius) in the plane.
The total area covered by the discs is 1 square meter. Show that there is a subcollection S of discs
such that the discs in S are non-overlapping and the total area of the discs in S is at least 1/9 square
meter.
3. (MOSP) Consider a complete graph on n vertices, in which each edge is colored such that at most n -
2 edges are colored with the same color. Prove that there exist 3 vertices such that the edges between
them are each colored with different colors.
Induction- Prove it for the base case(s), then argue if it is true for a case, it is true for the
”next” case.

7 Induction- Easy
n(n+1)
1. Prove by induction that 1 + 2 + . . . n = 2 .
2. Prove that a square can be dissected into n squares for all n ≥ 6.
3. There are n identical cars on a racetrack. Among all of them, they have just enough gas for one car to
complete a lap. Show there is a car which can complete a lap by collecting gas from the other cars on
its way around.
4. For which values of n can the numbers 1, 2, . . . n be divided into 3 groups so the sum of the numbers
in each group is the same?

8 Medium
1. We are given some unit squares which are translations of each other in the plane such that from any
n+1, at least 2 intersect. Prove we may place at most 2n-1 points in the plane such that every square
contains one of the points on its boundary or interior.
2. (USAMO 2003/1) Prove that for every n there exists a n-digit number divisible by 5n all of whose
digits are odd.
3. Prove that a graph with 2n points and n2 + 1 edges contains a triangle. (CHALLENGE! Prove it
contains at least n triangles).

9 Hard
1. Prove that there exists a set S of 31000 points in the plane such that for each point P in S, there are at
least 2000 points in S whose distance to P is exactly 1 inch.
2. (USAMO 2002/1) Let S be a set with 2002 elements and let N be an integer with 0 ≤ N ≤ 22002 .
Prove it is possible to color every subset of S either black or white so that the following conditions
hold: (a) the union of any 2 white subsets is white, (b) the union of any 2 black subsets is black and
(c) there are exactly N white subsets.
3. (IMO 2005/2) Let a1 , a2 . . . be a sequence of integers with infinitely many positive and negative terms.
Suppose that for every positive integer n the numbers a1 , a2 . . . an leave n different remainders when
divided by n. Prove that every integer occurs once in the sequence.
4. (TT 1989) We are given N¿1 lines in the plane, no 2 parallel, no 3 concurrent. Prove it is possible to
assign a nonzero integer of absolute value not exceeding N to each region of the plane determined by
these lines, such that the sum of the integers on either side of any of the given lines is equal to 0.
