Discovery 16: Lab - Monitor with Policies

Introduction
Complete this lab exercise to practice what you learned in the “Monitoring with Policies” section of this course. In
this activity, you will learn how to view and create monitoring policies.

Lab Topology

Task 1: View Predefined Monitoring Policies


The purpose of this task is to look at the monitoring policy that is set by default for every device.

Activity Procedure
Complete these steps:

Step 1
From the jump host, open the Google Chrome web browser and click the Cisco EPN Manager bookmark
(https://epnm-40.lab.local) on the toolbar to access your Cisco EPN Manager server.

Step 2
Log in as user root with the password Pass1234.

Step 3
From the menu, choose Monitor > Monitoring Tools > Monitoring Policies.

Step 4
Click Automonitoring in the left pane, or select Automonitoring in the right pane and then click Edit.

The Automonitoring Device Parameter dialog box is displayed, showing the current settings.

Step 5
Change Environment Temperature polling to 30 minutes and set the threshold to 75 degrees Celsius.

Step 6
Click Save and Activate and then click OK in the pop-up window.

Step 7
Click Cancel to return to the My Policies list.

Activity Verification
You have completed this task when you attain this result:
You have viewed the default monitoring policy that is applied to every device (except to Cisco NCS 2000 and
Cisco ONS series devices).
Task 2: Create a New Policy
The purpose of this task is to create and apply an Interface Health policy.

Activity Procedure
Complete these steps:

Step 1
If it is not already open, choose Monitor > Monitoring Tools > Monitoring Policies from the menu.

Step 2
In the left pane, highlight My Policies.

Step 3
In the right pane, click Add.

The left pane now lists the available monitoring policy templates.

Step 4
Choose Interface Health.

Step 5
From the Device Selection drop-down list, choose the port group and then expand Port Type. Choose Ethernet
CSMACD, gigabit Ethernet, and MPLS port types, and click OK.
(Multiple Interface Health policies can be added, with each setting a policy for a different set of port types.)

Step 6
Enter the name MyPortMonitoring for your policy.

Step 7
Under Parameters and Thresholds, choose a polling frequency of 5 min from the drop-down list.

Step 8
Under Parameters and Thresholds, practice expanding parameters and entering a threshold and alarm
conditions. You can also add multiple thresholds (such as a value for Minor, a value for Major, and a value for
Critical). Then click Save and Activate.

Step 9
On the My Policies page, click Details at the right of your policy. From here, you can check that the devices in
the policy were successfully polled, and if you hover you mouse pointer over the Parameters column you can
view the polled parameters.
Step 10
Repeat step 3 through step 8 to create a monitoring policy for your Optical devices that utilizes the Optical 15
mins policy.

Tip: Choose all of your tcc devices.


Step 11
Repeat step 3 through step 8 to again to create a monitoring policy for your core devices that utilizes the
Pseudowire Emulation Edge to Edge policy.

Tip: Choose all of your Core devices.

You will now have three new monitoring policies, as shown in the graphic.

Activity Verification
You have completed this task when you attain these results:
You have created and applied an Interface Health monitoring policy.
You have created and applied an Optical and a Pseudowire monitoring policy.
