Nursing Information System
Nursing information includes data collected by nurses, data used
by nurses, data about nursing activity, and data about nursing
resources.
Nursing information system refers to applying computer science
and information science to manage operations involved in the
nursing profession.

readability of nursing documents, avoidance of
repetition while carrying out documentation, better
support of workflow, and greater compliance to the
legalities.
The main functions that can be found in
current ward nursing information systems
are:
■ Care planning
■ Staff rostering
■ Clinical Nursing Record ■ Attendance recording
■ Care evaluation ■ Skill mix management
■ Costing
■ Discharge planning
■ Budget management
■ Workload assessment (prospective
and or retrospective)
■ Personnel management
These functions are typically grouped
into three main modules:

■ Patient care ■ Workload ■ Rostering with

Strategies to Implement Nursing
Information System
Involves nurses, users, and other healthcare professionals from all departments in designing,
developing, and testing information system applications.

Designate a nurse to co-ordinate the implementation process within the nursing department

Establish a user committee to introduce NIS by involving the key players

identify consultants and other manpower resources available during this process

Develop a training program to address the why or the rationale for the system, its advantages, and
disadvantages.

Employ a nursing informatics expert to educate and train the nurses

Provide training prior to and during the implementation phase

Ensure security, privacy and confidentiality

NURSING
INFORMATICS
(NI)
Meaning and Definitions
Nursing Informatics is a specialty that integrates nursing
science with multiple information and analytical sciences to
identify, define, manage, and communicate data, information,
knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice.
Goal of Nursing Informatics

❑To improve the health of populations, communities,

families, and individuals by optimizing information
management and communication
Need for Nursing Informatics

❑To provide comprehensive and quality patient care, nurses must be

prepared to use information and telecommunications technology.
❑All over the world, health organizations are implementing clinical
information systems and electronic health records. Hence, nurses must
acquire adequate knowledge and skills to implement clinical
information systems.
❑Around the world, telecommunication infrastructure is being
upgraded, enabling more people and organizations to use internet
services and video conferencing facilities.
Nurse Informaticist
◦ Also known as nurse informatics specialists, they are specially trained
to help manage, interpret, and communicate the vital medical data
information that flows in and out of physicians’ offices, hospitals,
clinics, and other healthcare facility computer systems.
Informatics Nurse
A registered nurse with an interest or experience working in an
informatics field. A generalist in the field of informatics in nursing.
