ASSERTION & REASON QUESTIONS

There two statements are given –one labelled Assertion (A) and the other labelled Reason (R).
Select the correct answer to those questions from the codes (A), (B), (C) and (D) as given
below.
(A) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
(B) Both A and R are true and R is NOT the correct explanation of A
(C) A is true but R is false
(D) A is false and R is true

Q9.ASSERTION: The velocity increases, when water flowing in broader pipe enter narrow pipe.
REASON: According to equation of continuity, product of area and velocity is constant.

Q10. ASSERTION: Hydrostatic pressure is a vector quantity.

REASON: Pressure is force divided by area, and force is a vector quantity.

SECTION – B
Q11. Water rises in a capillary tube but mercury falls in the same tube. Why?

Q12. Write any 4 assumptions of kinetic theory of gas?

Q13. The stress-strain graphs for materials A and B are shown in figure. The graphs are
drawn to the same scale.

(a) Which is more brittle? Give reason.

(b) Which of the two is the stronger material? Give reason.

SECTION -C

Q14. What do you mean by ‘permanent set’ in a body?Draw the relevant stress -strain graph.

Q15. Eight rain drops of radius 1mm each falling down with velocity of 5 cm/sec coalesce to
form a bigger drop. Find the terminal velocity of the bigger drop.

Q16. Show that the average K.E. of a gas molecule is directly proportional to the temperature
of the gas. Hence give the kinetic interpretation of temperature.

Q17. Derive an expression for excess pressure inside the drop.

OR
Derive an expression for excess pressure inside the bubble

(2)
Q18. A) Explain why girders are given I shape.
B) Explain why steel is more elastic than rubber.

SECTION- D

Q 19. CASE STUDY QUESTION

Viscosity
Viscosity is, essentially, fluid friction. Like friction between moving solids, viscosity transforms
kinetic energy of (macroscopic) motion into heat energy.
Heat is energy of random motion at the molecular level, so to have any understanding of how
this energy transfer takes place, it is essential to have some picture, however crude, of solids
and/or liquids sliding past each other as seen on the molecular scale.

i)The tangential force or viscous force on any layer of the liquid is directly proportional to the
velocity gradient. Then the direction of velocity gradient is
(a) Parallel to the direction of the flow of the liquid
(b) Opposite to the direction of the flow of the liquid
(c) Independent to the direction of the flow of the liquid
(d) Perpendicular to the direction of flow of the liquid

ii) Viscous force exerted by the liquid flowing between two plates in a streamline flow
depends upon
(a) Velocity gradient in the direction perpendicular in the plates (b) Area of plates
(c) Coefficient viscosity of the liquid (d) All of these

iii) The coefficient of viscosity for hot air is

(a) Greater than the coefficient of viscosity for cold air
(b) Smaller than the coefficient of viscosity for cold air
(c) Same as the coefficient of viscosity for cold air
(d) Increase or decrease depending on the external pressure

iv) While studying about fluid mechanics, the equations and postulates stand for the fluid
which are
(a) Non viscous only(b) Incompressible only (c) Non-viscous and Incompressible (d) Liquid only

SECTION – E

Q 20. A) Explain molecular theory of surface tension

B) Derive an expression for the rise of liquid in a capillary tube.
OR
State Bernoulli’s Principle and apply it to determine the speed of efflux from the side of
container both when its top is closed and open. Hence derive Torricelli’s law.
