Outcomes of Democracy
Acommodates Social Diversities
• Democracy is not simply rule by majority opinion. The majority needs to work with the minority so that the government functions to represent the general view. Majority and minority options are not permanent.
• Democracy avoids social conflicts by accommodating social
diversities. In a democracy, the possibility of social conflicts is reduced because it ensures inclusive representation of various communities within the powerful decision making institutions.
• Democracies help the disadvantaged groups by recognising the
wrongs done to them and by promising to give them an equal place in society. This makes their struggle easier.
• Since democracies have popular support, they are inclusive of all
diversities provide regular chances to express dissatisfaction with administration, they are best suited to produce better results than authoritarian rulers who don’t pay much attention to the needs of common people.
• Democracy makes people learn to respect differences in a diverse
society and develop mechanisms to negotiate the differences. Ability to handle social differences, divisons and conflicts is a definite plus point of democratic regimes.
Enhances Dignity of Citizens
• Democracy allows citizens to participate in the decision-making
process by electing representatives to voice their interests and concerns. Through voting, citizens have the ability to shape policies and choose leaders who align with their preferences
• Democracies typically emphasise the protection of individual
rights and freedoms. Constitutional guarantees, such as freedom of speech, assembly, and the right to a fair trial, are commonly found in democratic societies
• Democracy promotes dignity of individuals by recognising the
importance of vulnerable groups and ensuring equality. They have mutual respects for the social differences amongst people.
• Democracy ensures that it addresses possible conflicts that arise
among the individuals because they might feel alienated or unequal. It ensures equality of socio-political and economic rights to all classes. • Democracy is people’s own government. People wished to choose elected representatives who will rule for the country on the behalf of the people. They also believe that democracy is suitable for their country.
Other Points • Democracies provide legitimacy to the quest of achieving equality of status, opinion and opportunities by recognising them and formulating laws to overcome them.
• Every citizen in a democratic country has the right to examine the
process of decision-making to ensure that the right procedures were followed in it. This is called transparency. This has ensured that the government doesn’t indulge in corrupt activities.
• Democracy is a popular form of government. People participate in
making decisions that affects them, including chosing of their representatives. This makes results acceptable.
• Conflicts are resolved through debate, discussions and
negotiation rather than discretion. In non-democratic governments, conflicts are often resolved through discretion rather than debate, discussions, and negotiation.
• Democracy is based on the idea of deliberation and negotiation
to ensure that different views are considered, thereby improving the quality of decision making. It makes the decision effective and acceptable by the people
• Democracies usually develop a procedure to conduct their
competition. This reduces the possibility of these tensions becoming explosive or violent.
