System grounding information should be provided for each customer power
supply connection, i.e., Main Power, Auxiliary Power, and Control Power. If
not specified, then the Manufacturer may, for example, supply auxiliary
Annex C.13 Add
components such as coolant pump ASD controllers that are suitable only
for a solidly-grounded auxiliary power source. This can cause unreliable
operation if the customer’s Auxiliary power source is resistance-grounded.
When selecting a motor protection relay, the specifying engineer should
Annex C.26 Add confirm that the range of frequency for the relay’s current and voltage
inputs is suitable for the operating range of the ASD output
If Constant-Speed Bypass is being specified for a critical application,
consider developing a Control Narrative description to be reviewed with the
Manufacturer and in coordination with the driven equipment manufacturer
to ensure the control methodology is feasible. For example, if the driven
equipment is low-inertia and cannot tolerate a backspin condition, transfer
Annex C.31 Add of a coasting motor to constant-speed may not be feasible.
Also, if Constant-Speed operation is required, then the motor, driven
equipment, and gearbox manufacturers should confirm by torsional analysis
that the equipment is suitable for a full-voltage across-the-line start.
- For large ASDs to be packaged in a pre-fabricated building, the
cooling requirements of the drive will likely determine the total cooling
load for the building and HVAC will be critical to maintain reliable
operation. The specifying engineer should consider 100%
redundancy of all HVAC system components to ensure a single point
of failure will not result in ASD shutdown.
Annex C.37 Add - For liquid-cooled ASDs, the specifying engineer should consider
100% redundancy in water-to-air or water-to-water heat exchanger
capacity, with the ability to isolate a failed exchanger for maintenance
or replacement while running. For large, liquid-cooled ASDs, the
liquid cooling system typically handles the bulk of heat removal for
power circuit components and input transformer(s), but the system
will still be dependent on building HVAC to maintain reliable
operation.
When preparing for shipment, the ASD assemblies should be equipped
Annex C.39 Add
with impact indicators to detect shocks that can occur during transit.
A torsional analysis should be a requirement for an ASD system specified
Annex D.4 Add with Constant-Speed Bypass in which it may be necessary to perform an
across- the-line start or a spinning load restart at full-voltage.
For liquid-cooled ASDs in locations where plant cooling water quality
Annex D.6 Add is a concern, i.e., exchanger fouling, the specifying engineer should
consider water-to-air exchangers.
