Roman Stock
Characters
Stock Characters are fictional
characters that is easily recognizable
to audiences because of their
predictable traits and roles in a story.

Parasitus
The name “Parasitus” is rather misleading
● This character does leech off of the main
characters in the show.

● Empties their tables, asking the main


characters to feed him in return for
pleasant company.

Servus Callidus
● The most popular of stock characters
● A Tricky Slave
● He always finds a solution to his
young masterʼs erotic problem
○ Often while humiliating his young
masterʼs father
○ Usually earns his freedom for
doing so

Adulescens
This is the character who falls in love with the Virgo or Meretrix whom he cannot have for some reason or other. He is the
master of the tricky slave.

He rarely thinks of anything except the girl he He is young and rich but somewhat a coward.

The Adulescens usually frees the Servus

Virgo
● A young maiden

● She is the love interest of the adulescens, but does not get
much stage time.

● She is beautiful and virtuous with little personality. She is


treated as a prize.

● Two Types: Greedy or Loving & Loyal
Meretrix ● The first type is older and more experienced
and has seen a lot.
● The second type is truly in love with the
adulescens.

● Both are very attractive


with a complex hairdo
and outfit, which is
yellow.
● Is owned by another
stock character the Leno.

Senex

● Often depicted as the father of the adulescens.


● Heʼs an authority figure who imparts wisdom upon the
young man, and adheres to traditional values.
● His views often contrasts with the adulescensʼ, leading
them into conflict.

Miles Gloriosus
● A braggart soldier

● He loves himself more than


anything else.

● He is very stupid, cowardly, and


gullible.

● He is interested in the same girl


as the adulescens most of the
times.

Ancilla
● A maid or nurse ● No particular age

● She is a minor character used to move


the plot by presenting information or
helping another character.

● She is used by her mistress as a tool


and a messenger.

Matrona

● Mother
● She loves her children, but is temperamental towards her
husband.
● She does not have to be a devoted and loyal wife, but
sometimes is.
