Configuring Repeaters and Equalizers in

Bulk
Infinera WPLM provides the facility to make modifications to the properties of the repeaters and equalizers
of a link in bulk. Bulk configuring lets you assign or modify a single value for a property field for multiple or
all repeaters and equalizers at the same time. This eliminates the tedious task of applying the same values
for each repeater. Multiple property field(s) can be also be modified at the same time.
Bulk configuration of repeaters and equalizers should be performed on managed and reachable links. For
links that are unmanaged or unreachable, the Bulk Configuration option will be disabled.

Page 5-2 Overview

Overview
The fault monitoring and management capabilities of Infinera WPLM allows:
 Monitoring alarms and events detected by the WPLM server.

 Retrieving alarms and events stored in the WPLM server.

 Applying Alarm Severity Profile Settings to the WPLM link(s).

 Acknowledging of alarms and events.

 Deletion of alarms.

Infinera WPLM provides a central location for monitoring critical events and alarms generated by the
WPLM servers. Infinera WPLM supports two types of notifications, namely alarms and events. Figure 5-1
summarizes the different types of alarms and events.

Figure 5-1 Events and Notifications

Alarms
An alarm is an indication of a failure condition. Alarms are assigned severities as critical, major, minor and
warning, depending on the degree of service degradation or disruption. Using the Alarm Severity Profile
Settings tool, users can edit the assigned severities.
Alarms are categorized into the following categories:
 Facility

 Equipment

 Communication

 WPLM Alarm

Fault Management Page 5-3

Alarms are assigned the following type of severities:

 Critical (CR)

 Major (MJ)

 Minor (MN)

 Warning (WN)

 Not Reported (NR)

Events
Events identify changes to an entity in the network. Events indicate the operations performed through
Infinera WPLM. Events are recorded within the system and are available to management applications for
data-model synchronization and reporting. Events are stored and can be viewed in the Event Manager.
Network elements recognize the following types of notifications:
 Conditions

Conditions are reported when anything other than the usual behavior of the managed network ele-
ment occurs. Conditions are further divided into the following categories:
Alarmed conditions—Conditions that require immediate action are reported as alarms. These
conditions require immediate attention, for example Intermittent Fault Flag (IFF) sets. They are
differentiated by the severity. These events are also available in the alarm list.
Threshold Crossing Alarms—These conditions are reported when there is a threshold cross-
ing.
 Reporting Events

Reporting events are generated by the target network element when there is a state change in the
WPLM server. Reporting events are divided into the following categories:
Security event—Events generated when there are security violations in the WPLM server.
Administrative event—Internal communication events between network elements and man-
agement clients. These events are used to communicate the event queue status and processor
activities (server start-up, server shut-down).
Threshold crossing event—Events that report threshold crossing information.

Audit event—Records of user actions that modify the state of any of the managed objects within
the network element.
Infinera WPLM provides the following two tools to view alarms and events generated in the WPLM server:
 Alarm Manager

 Event Manager

formed during the maintenance window with utmost diligence and care.

If identified fault is deemed of low-priority, follow these steps to temporarily clear the alarm if required:
Step 1 Update the Absolute Thresholds parameters in Submarine Link Configuration dialog to a value
lower than currently measured LBC.
Step 2 Poll repeater again to clear the alarm.

SLL_POS_DIFF_TCA

Positive Differential Threshold Crossing Alert for Send Light Level

 Alarm Type - Facility

 Severity - Minor

 SA/NSA - NSA

Description and Causes

On polling a repeater, if the difference between the current measured SLL (in dBm) and previous
measured SLL (if available) for the amplifier is positive and the absolute difference is more than the
positive differential SLL settings, this alarm is raised. WPLM will raise this alarm on the Amplifier CTP
object (AMPLIFIERCTP) in the A and B direction.

Clearing Procedure
Step 1 Using historical repeater measurement data, make comparison between historical and current
repeater SLL measurement(s).
Step 2 Check repeater output power level with that of reference settings.
Step 3 Make the appropriate corrections to decrease the repeater output power.

Note: The above activity of making corrections may be traffic affecting and as such should be per-
formed during the maintenance window with utmost diligence and care.

If identified fault is deemed of low-priority, follow these steps to temporarily clear the alarm if required:
Step 1 Update the Absolute Thresholds parameters in Submarine Link Configuration dialog to a value
greater than the currently measured LBC.
Step 2 Poll repeater again to clear the alarm.

Communication Alarms
Communication alarms are associated with faults which impact the communication between WPLM and
Infinera SLTE nodes. 
For example: Cannot update the Submarine network elements (Repeaters or Equalizers).

GET_FAILED

Unable to query the Submarine network elements (Repeaters or

Equalizers)
 Alarm Type - Communication

 Severity - Major

 SA/NSA - NSA

Description and Causes

This alarm is generated by WPLM when a poll or a query request for Submarine network element fails. This
alarm is raised on the Submarine network element object (SUBMARINENE).

Clearing Procedure
Check for the following causes:
Step 1 Modulation Depth of the Submarine Link is sufficient enough.
Step 2 Response Tone of the Submarine network element is correct.
Step 3 If any of the above parameters are incorrect then:
Step 3a Update the parameters in Submarine Link Configuration dialog.
Step 3b Poll the Submarine network element again.
Step 4 If alarm still persist then check for SLTE connectivity issues to/from line.

Equipment Alarms
The following are the Equipment Alarms that are raised in Infinera WPLM.

IFF_SET

Intermittent Fault Flag Set

 Alarm Type - Equipment

 Severity - Critical

 SA/NSA - SA

Description and Causes

On polling a Repeater, the IFF flag for the particular direction is set by the repeater due to below
mentioned reasons. WPLM will raise this alarm on the Amplifier CTP object (AMPLIFIERCTP) in the A and
B direction.
IFF flag is set by the repeater in this scenario:
If the output from the PIN diode monitoring the Received Light Level falls to a level corresponding to about
9.5dB below nominal Received Light Level, for 500 microseconds or longer, the Intermittent Fault Flag is
latched On.

Clearing Procedure
IFF Flag will remain set till user manually resets it.
Step to reset the IFF:
Step 1 Launch Link Manager for the link.
Step 2 Navigate and select the respective repeater in Link View.
Step 3 In the actions panel select the Reset Direction A/B Fault option.
Step 4 Poll the repeater.
Step 5 If IFF register remains set, check repeater RLL.
Step 6 Determine source of very low repeater RLL.
Step 7 Make corrective actions to restore repeater RLL to nominal value.
Step 8 In the actions panel select the Reset Direction A/B Fault option.
Step 9 Poll the repeater.
