DRAWING TEST
• For the next 90 minutes you are required to complete the equivalent of one A5
drawing. An A5 is half of an A4 page.
• Please look at the instructions below, as well as the rubric on the following
page, so that you know how you will be assessed.
INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Please read through the rubric at the start of the examination session so that
you know how you will be assessed.
2. Look at the provided photo of Nelson Mandela. This is what you will be
drawing in this test unless you have spoken to your educator about
completing a different portrait.
3. You may not trace the image, but you may use the grid method to transfer the
portrait onto your page.
4. Learners may not talk or borrow equipment from someone else and it would
be best if learners completed the controlled drawing in a calm and conducive
environment.
5. Please ensure to hand in this question paper, signed, with your drawing at
the end of the 90 minutes.
6. Learners may use any medium of their choice.
7. Before you hand in your drawings refer to the following points regarding your
completed portrait and make sure that you have met the following criteria to
the best of your ability.

7. 1) Look at your shadows and highlights. Are they accurate in relation to the
portrait you are drawing? Can you push these further by making shadows
darker where needed and highlights lighter, etc.?
7.2) Is your face in proportion?
7.3) Is there a definite focal point? If not, think carefully as to how you are able
to solve this dilemma.
7.4) Is there a definite foreground, middle ground, and background? Have you
engaged with the background as well?

I have read the instructions above and I will follow them as closely
as possible:
