Overview of CVS's Healthcare Strategy

CVS Health has aggressively invested in providing healthcare, mainly primary

healthcare, as well as affordable, convenient, and accessible general healthcare. In particular, the

company has established nearly 10,000 pharmacies and over 1,100 Minute Clinics nationwide.

Besides, CVS Health targets everyone since 85% of Americans reside within five miles of a CVS

store (Landi, 2024). As such, CVS leverages its massive presence to enclose the customer locally

while constructing the national model of medical care.

In recent years, CVS has moved more into the healthcare sector, acquiring Signify Health

and Oak Street Health for $20 billion. Notably, Oak Street Health mainly targets seniors and has

200 centers in 25 states in the US. It expects to open 300 centers by 2026 (Landi, 2024). On the

other hand, Signify Health conducts about 2 million home visits per year, which aids in filling

care gaps for Medicare and other high-risk patients.

MinuteClinics, affiliated with CVS, is shifting from its acute care focus to chronic and

preventative care. CVS Health’s strategy is to switch to a value-based care delivery model by

collaborating with health systems and providers to offer care management and social

determinants of health screening (Landi, 2024). While other retail players, such as Walmart and

Walgreens, are leaving the healthcare business, CVS is building an empire through investments

in digital health, telemedicine, and interoperable data systems to boost patient care.

Discussion Question

Considering that CVS has been aiming to integrate digitally driven engagements and

localized primary care services, how do you think this model will influence the availability of

primary care, which is equally relevant for underprivileged populations?
