What is It
The integumentary system consists of the skin, hair, fingernails,
glands and nerves.

Integumentary system – is a barrier that protects the internal structures of

the body from injury and infection.
Functions:
1. To regulate body temperature
2. Responsible for perspiration, excretion, protection, filtration and
sensation.

1. Skin (epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous layer) for excretion, sensation,

protection, filtration and heat regulation)

The skin
Epidermis -is the outermost layer with keratin which is a substance that
blocks water and microorganisms from entering the skin.it has pores where
sweat and oil leave the body.at the bottom of it are cells that produce
melanin that determines the color of the skin which protects the skin by
absorbing the UV from the sun.

Dermis- is the layer found under epidermis where cells are alive and
contain the protein collagen which contains sweat glands, oil glands hair
follicles and blood vessels. Due to presence of nerves one is able to sense
touch, pain, heat and pressure through the skin.
Subcutaneous layer – is a layer of fat below the dermis for serving as
storage for food and energy, the layers serve as an insulator of heat
Oil glands release oil known as sebum which is the skin’s natural
moisturizer which keeps the skin from drying up, repels water and making
the skin waterproof. Too much of sebum clog the pores causing pimples and
acne.
2. Nails (protect the sensitive fingertips and toes from injury, for sensing
the environment.)
3. Hair (hair in the nose and ears -filter dust, and particles, eyebrows-
absorb and deflect sweat to protect the eye, facial hair- reduce the
skin’s exposure to UV rays. Hair in the scalp protects the head and the
skull from abrasion).

4. Sweat gland (for excretion of wastes by releasing the excess water and
salts for body regulation)

5. Nerves (nerve endings function in the sense of touch)

What’s More
Matching type: Match the parts of the integumentary system in column A with the
functions in column B.
Column A
1. Integumentary System
2. Nails
3. Hairs
4. Glands
5. Epidermis
6. Dermis
Column B
a. system is to act as a barrier to protect the body from the outside world.
b. the most superficial layer of the skin that covers almost the entire
body surface

d. the deep layer of the skin found under the epidermis.
e. thin layer of tissue forming the natural outer covering of the body of a
person or animal
f. is a horn-like envelope covering the tips of the fingers and toes in most
primates and a few other mammals.
