MARCH MEETING
Why Are There So Few Women Leaders?
What Can You Do About It?
Video11:30 AM - 1:30 PM, March 6, 2012
Did you know? Only: 16% of American corporate boards and senior managers are women. 20% of nonprofit executives are female. 13% of the members of the Parliaments across the world are women. Women hold 23% of seats in U.S. state legislatures. This figure dropped after Nov 2011 election for the first time in 40 years. Find out about the three things every woman of any age can do to advance her career or position in family and community. Facebooks COO Sheryl Sandberg is a strong advocate of womanpower. Join us to watch her 15-minute TED talk that had gone viral and received more than 200,000 views. Then share your experiences with your tablemates and pick an action you can implement immediately. Chief operating officer of Facebook since 2008, Sandberg went from being chief of staff for the United States Treasury Department to vice president of sales and operations at Google. She graduated from Harvard and holds an MBA from Harvard Business School.

AWC MEMBER OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS
We appreciate the talents each person brings to our local AWC Chapter. That is why each year we recognize an outstanding member for their hard work and dedication to keeping an all-volunteer organization operating smoothly. Please take time to recognize this dedication by nominating one of our members for the AWC Member of the Year Award. The Member of the Year Award has been presented annually since 1986 to an active member who has significantly impacted the success of the organization through leadership and service. Qualities to consider may include meeting attendance, knowledge of AWC, committee involvement on the local or national level, promotion and enthusiasm for the success of AWC, and participation in AWC activities. Please submit your vote to Mitzie Zerr at 831-8505 or
[email protected]. Provide a short summary describing why you think this person should be considered for the award. The AWC Member of the Year will be announced at our May meeting.

eat. If executives eat in a public cafeteria, grab a tray. Engage on social media. Friend on facebook. Comment on their blog. Follow on twitter. Arrive at work when they do. Connect with leaders in other departments. Contribute to the company newsletter. Include board members. Never connect for personal gain. Disingenuous behaviors offend. Though geared towards corporate and work relationships, the point of this post is to discover for yourself when and where are appropriate points of connection. Mentor the right person for the right reason. Network with the right people and have a clear purpose for doing so. If you follow these tips, you will effectively increase the quality of your connections.

etworking and mentorship are opposite ends of the same spectrum. Mentoring could be defined as connecting with the purpose of helping others reach their full potential, and networking is creating valuable connections for the purpose of fulfilling your own goals. Ive heard both mentioned repeatedly over the last several months, and thought it appropriate to share some ideas that can be used for both mentors and networkers alike. The following was originally by Dan Rockwell on his blog at The Leadership Freak http://leadershipfreak.wordpress.com/2012/02/03/10power-tips-for-connecting-with-powerful-people/ where Dan provides the list of Jesse Lyn Stoners 10 power tips for connecting with powerful people. Judges for other chapters
The AWC Topeka Chapter contacted our chapter to find judges for its Headliner Awards. Topeka wanted feedback from AWC members without prior knowledge of the applicants. Kudos goes to Paula Clouse, Rowena Raborar and Jill Randolph for providing their expertise. It is great to be able to help other chapters!

Since we have moved our meeting location, the meals are now buffet style, and whatever food doesnt get eaten gets thrown away. The AWC Board decided why not donate the food to a cause that can help others out. Last month the excess food was donated to Harmony House. They expressed their gratitude, and we plan to continue donating leftovers to them in the future.
