How Yellowstone National Park is changed by its wolves

A popular destination for nature-lovers and those who enjoy adventures in the wilderness,
Yellowstone National Park in the United States is well-known for its beautiful landscapes and
abundant wildlife. It is hard to imagine that the park was once troubled by destroyed
vegetation and an unbalanced ecosystem. But everything changed in 1995 when wolves were
5 brought into the park.

Wolves are food distributors: they provide food for other animals. They kill and feed on their
prey, but they never eat the entire dead animal, therefore leaving food for scavengers such as
ravens and bears, which rely on dead animal remains for food.

The wolves’ presence in Yellowstone also benefits plants. Before the wolves were introduced
10 to the park, vegetation along the rivers had been destroyed by the vast number of deer which
ate and trampled many of the plants. However, ever since the wolves have been around, the
number of deer has been kept in check and, as the deer have moved away from certain areas
to avoid the wolves, trees and grass have been able to recover.

Healthier trees attract beavers – which eat leaves and twigs – to build new dams and ponds
15 along the rivers, which provide cold, shaded water for fish. Now, birds have also started
moving in as the forests flourish.

The case of the Yellowstone wolves shows how complex nature is and how one change can
lead to another. In light of this, it is vital to be aware of the impact we can have on our planet,
as it could be far more massive than you can imagine.

Joan Hey Davy, did you read the news that a guy was seen beating up stray dogs in Sham Shui Po

Davy Yeah, when my sister told me about that, I thought she had read some fake news

How can people be this cruel? That being said, people who leave dogs

Joan Indeed. Many of those (7) ____________________ are simply not prepared to take

they leave them on the streets.

The first dish he made was grilled chicken. Originally I asked him to (5) ____________________

Complete the following email by circling the correct word or phrase from the options in brackets.

Dear Uncle Tom

How are you doing? I just came back from a camping trip with my classmates in Sai Kung. We had a
blast!

This was the first time that I have been camping, so to be honest, I was (1) ( fair / fairly / fairer )
nervous before the trip. That was (2) ( complete / completely / hardly ) normal, though, wasn’t it? I
spent quite a long time packing up my equipment. The weather forecast said it wouldn’t rain, though,
so I didn’t (3) ( have to / had to / must ) bring an umbrella.

(4) ( On / At / In ) Saturday morning we gathered at Choi Hung MTR station and headed to Sai Kung
by Mini-bus. After we got off, we still (5) ( have to / had to / must ) get to Tai Long Sai Wan on foot,
which took around two hours. It wasn’t an easy walk carrying all our things on our backs, but as we
were nearing our destination, I kept telling (6) ( yourself / ourselves / myself ) that I
(7) ( had to / must / mustn’t ) give up and would soon forget my tiredness.

When we made it to the beach at Tai Long Wan, we were all amazed by the breathtaking views, and
it reminded me (8) ( how many / how much / how ) I love the beauty of nature. The sky was blue, the
water was clear, (9) ( and / or / but ) we could see many off-shore islands in the distance. After a
quick lunch, we pitched (10) ( my / our / ourselves ) tents onto the sand and set our other things up
too. (11) ( On / At / In ) night, the sky was so clear that we were (12) ( can / could / able to ) see
countless stars twinkling – it absolutely blew us away. I even spotted a shooting star –I of course
made a wish (13) ( immediate / immediately / immediated)!

It’s amazing that Hong Kong, despite being a busy city, has such quiet and beautiful spots like this
for people to chill out at. We (14) ( had to / must / mustn’t ) do our best to protect it. What is your
favourite camping spot in Hong Kong? Let’s go there together soon and have (15) ( some / any / no)
fun!

Best

Jonas

Complete the following speech by circling the correct word or phrase from the options in brackets.

Good morning Principal, teachers and students

I am Nancy Kwong, Chairperson of We Share, a government-funded food bank in Hong Kong. It is

(1) ( my / its / their ) pleasure to speak to you today, and I would like to tell you how
(2) ( our / your / their ) organization helps those in need in our community.

We all know that Hong Kong is one of the most advanced cities in the world, but (3) ( which /
how much / how many ) do you know about its social problems? Currently there are many poor
families living in the city. Some people can’t get a job (4) ( so / but / because ) they are from the
mainland, making them unable to support (5) ( them / they / themselves ). (6) ( Some / No / Any )
others are suffering from illnesses, so they (7) ( can / can’t / unable to ) make a living like most other
people.

(8) ( Therefore / Since / Although ) they are part of our community and they can’t find (9) ( some /
any / no ) help – well, except a little support from the government which is not enough, we feel that
we have to give them a hand. What we do is simple: we give them food (10) ( so / because / since )
they (11) ( can / can’t / able to ) carry on with their lives. This is something we want to keep on doing,
(12) (and / or / but ) we’re a non-profit organization with limited resources. To help more people in
need, we need help too.

What you can do is also simple: (13) ( share / shared / to share ) our social media page, so more
people will donate to us, and (14) ( sign / signed / to sign ) up for our voluntary work shift that take
place each weekend, as we are now looking for more volunteers who can help collect food donations
from organizations such as hotels and restaurants.

(15) (How much / How many / What ) of you would be interested in lending a hand? I was asking
myself this question on my way here. But having talked to your Principal earlier on, I’m now sure
that our team will have many new faces soon. Thank you.
